@@DrPacman Comfort options were there from the beginning. I know because I had this game since it was announced it would get VR-support and I switched the settings after a few races, because of that 'claustrofobic' view. They have some tracks where you get a message and they always automaticly switch on the blinders. I don't know why they do that every time and just ask you once if you're ok with it. I hope they've updated that (haven't played it in a while now). I was surprised that with its insane speeds and such, I certainly would get nausseaus because I'm prone to it with certain type of games, I didn't get ill at all.
Matt Turner, I feel uncomfortable with "smooth turning" in many VR games and need to use "click turning." However, I've been pleasantly surprised that I can turn on "smooth turning" in Doom VFR and turn the blinders all the way off in Wipeout and not feel the slightest bit sick
I don't agree too much with this analysis. A criticism was how claustrophobic the cockpit was and the need to duck to take in more view, but those are just blinders for comfort. You should go into settings and turn them off.
You can change the options to stop the cockpit view from becoming 'claustrophobic'. It's just a comfort setting for VR beginners and those who are prone to motion sickness.
For ppl that havent tried VR. Watching VR footage on a flat screen is like being a virgin and watching porn. You don't know what its like going inside.
That's not a bad comparison actually. Everytime I would watch a VR vid I thought it was overrated until I tried it. It's so much more than what people can convey with words or what I could see. You have to do it yourself.
Really nice upgrade for Wipeout fans. Have to say I've adored the series since it's PS1 days, especially the PSP and Vita entries. Respect for a great game.
VR is not something that can be described accurately in videos of it. The problem is that the secondary screen is not representative of the actual in helmet visuals. This is probably the biggest barrier to entry for VR.........you can't really trust someone else's representation of it until you see it for yourself. I'll admit, I thought PSVR was going to be a joke, to be this God awful representation of VR solely for the sake of the fact that at the time, public interest in VR was at an all time high. I stand here to say as an owner of a PSVR, I was dead wrong. Be it the amazing world of Farpoint or the quaint artistry of Moss, big name multiplatform games like Doom VFR, or the incomparable Resident Evil 7 in VR, PSVR is the real deal. Add Wipeout Omega Collection and it's not a wonder why PSVR is still leading the way on the VR games front. Hats off to Sony for championing this fledgling medium, as VR is a medium that can only be consumed, not viewed. With Sony lowering the cost to access PSVR, I hope more people who are either on the fence or outright opposed to VR, give the PSVR a shot. I did, and it is a decision I do not regret.
Agreed. PSVR isn't the best hardware on the market, but Sony's support and their game centric focus is proving that they knew what they were doing with it. Still want to see a few more big games, but so far, it's been a great experience.
I just bought the game a few days ago. Can confirm it is abso-fucking-lutely amazing in PS VR. This is what stores need to show people to convince them to get VR.
Yeah but the difference is that this is a playstation owned property, designed to sell playstation products. They're trying to sell VR headsets. Other publishers are under no obligation to give free vr content. They shouldn't have to because they have to pay employees to work specifically on that part which will likely have very little return on investment. Hopefully in future games, vr modes become a standard part of the project.
It's a PS4 remaster of a PS3 remaster of a PSP game. I'd hope a PS4 Pro could run it 60FPS. Heck, it should be able to run it at 90 or 120FPS without resorting to interpolation. The visuals of this title are beneath that 3rd party Wipeout clone on the Switch- which also manages to run at a locked 60fps on mobile hardware and looks far better.
Mr Skellow Super Hot VR has entirely separate levels designed for VR, and is essentially a different game. Charging for it separately is entirely reasonable.
I know it's not native 4k, but it looks and feels like a stunning remaster and 4K does it justice. But VR mode.... Holy balls Batman, this thing comes alive.
With the recent price drop in PSVR and WipEout Omega, Sony killing it again for VR gaming! Racing off and leaving the other also rans in the dust beyond the horizon.... Alongside the most interesting exclusives and first party gaming. PayStation is still the best place to play.
ShinySilvery they are not killing it.. Last two bigger hyped games failed (bravo team and the inpatient). Moss was great though, but Sony need to have a hell of an E3 show for VR to keep thr momentum going. I want more games like resident evil 7, farpoint, skyrim and doom vfr.
88oscuro Besides outselling Oculus Rift and HTC Vive combined (I would call that killing it!) at around 2million units to date, cannot see the competition coming up to that market penetration. You’re right though. Moss in February and this in March. Sony will need to keep pushing the good stuff through. Apparently there’s some crazy stuff in store for PSVR. Roll on E3.
If you own PSVR you NEED to play this game. The Wipeout VR update is fantastic, being in VR makes the game easyer to play and really makes you feel like your there flying around the track at insane speeds..... oh and the soundtrack is still banging!
The best option for Wipeout Omega Collection VR is: on board these gliders with full VR option enabled, so no restrictions for the viewing angle and cam constrained to the pilots head! This is to do this game for the full effect yesss! :D
I don’t even play racing games, but i had to buy Wipeout after all the fuss about how good the VR patch is, and i can confirm that it’s absolutely incredible!
If all you wanted is more space why didn’t you just stick a new hard drive in your amateur PS4? It’s unfortunate that there isn’t more support for the PRO but I’ve been quite pleased with what I’ve experienced on my PRO. Do you have a 4K TV?
Bigbad Crawford The resolution difference is massive though with Sony's first-party games like Horizon Zero Dawn, GT Sport and now the upcoming God of War plus all the extra graphical effects. 60 fps on Shadow of the Colossus was also nice upgrade. On 4K TV with standard PS4, the 3 out of 4 pixels of the image is upscaled by the TV which is really bad for image quality while games I mentioned are either 1800p or checkboard up to 4K. That's why Sony made the Pro because more and more people were getting 4k TV's. I mean the console is only $100 more than the standard PS4. What did you expect? 4 times the resolution plus 60 fps on every game? That's not how it works.

All current VR games are pretty much limited to this physical limitation. When we sit... our neck structure won't allow us to turn 720 degree nonstop. And when we stand... we will hit the wall eventually, unless the system can "bring us back to the origin" automatically or you'd have to walk back manually. That is why current gen VR games are either arcade style rail shooter or racer (racer... in a way... is also an on-rail typpa game). Floor moves & you don't move typpa control scheme. The Haptic Chair and Treadmill will work but those are not practical solutions for majority household. It's for amusement parks. How about Arcade? You'd needa hire someone to stand next to the machine, to care, to hand hygiene mask over to customers.
I turned off baby mode on PSVR and when you're in the cockpit - no blinders come on the side so it's even more intense. Also - disable supersampling on the pro before playing the game - otherwise it wont run
Hugo Stiglitz - as the other person said - 5.50 came out officially about 4-6 weeks ago now :) but the option for SS is only there on the Pro - but if you have it on and try and run this game in VR, it just hangs at the loading screen. If you turn it off then it works fine. Basically, the in-game supersampling conflicts with the system-wide one - which is a bit of a pain.
Ah, first thing I did with cockpit view is >>> go to options >>> turn off the blinders. Because the claustrophobic view is automatically put on unless you turn it off. I'm not a motion sickness prone person so turning off the blinders helped expand my field of view while in the cockpit. It is BEAUTIFUL!
Man take 3 seconds to look in the menu and you will see you can turn off the blinders so you can see everything while racing and theres plenty of adjustments you can make to increase your comfort to cut down on motion sickness...or make it more intense if you wish. This is the first Digital Foundry video I've seen where you guys missed the view options. Did you you have a early build that didn't have them? In the video you have the view blinders set to full. You can dial them back half way or turn them off. I need comfort settings in a few games but was surprised I could turn this all the way off and feel fine. You can also lock the camera's tilting to cockpit (used here), track, or pilot. The pilot setting leans the view to every bank and turn
Great analysis. I played the VR update quite a bit yesterday and it is really impressive. Easily one of the top VR experiences available at the moment.
I have the htc vive right now but i wanted to get a psvr for some time. This may be the game that pushes me over the edge. VR makes everything better :-)
I bought this game yesterday, wanting to get down with the PSVR mode. I should have bought it months ago, it’s great! What a blast and so beautiful running on my 4K TV.
You know.. I like what you did here. Referencing the use of a term or phrase repeatedly does make said repetition feel ok and even funny. Good on ya! have you guys ever considered doing a UHD physical disc release of the full reviews or DF retro vid's for us to buy? I'd love to be able to archive and check out (show off) what you guys do without having to store huge files on my pc, or taking time to download them.
Blinders can be turned off in the game's options. Forget the exact option to turn it off, cause the options aren't named super well, but you can definitely do it and it's a blast to play that way!
The best place to play Xbox games is on PC, even though, Windows Store and UWP sucks balls, but at least you can play those at 60 fps unlike on Xbox One X.
Yeah, man. Got my gaming PC setup. Forza Horizon 3 was great... although I had to download it three times through that stupid Microsoft Store before it would work. Lol.
I recently acquired a playstation VR, since the price it's super accessible in this very moment, and quite frankly, Wipeout Omega collection it's the definitive game for the PSVR! The graphics looks amazingly rendered, the music its explosive and on par with the fast and furious gameplay, and it's super immersive, to the point , that the more you play it using the PSVR visor, you become a better driver since the 3d audio and the sharp graphics help you out to take corners more aggressively and adapt the usage of the weaponry system (either offensive or defensively, according to your needs). But the most important part: it's so fun and quite a blast to play! I'm a believer now, I didn't pay much attention to VR games in the past, but the Wipeout omega collection have attracted my interest nowadays to invest more time on other titles.
I get motion sick real quick. Cant play rigs at all without feeling ill . I played this solid for hours and no motion sickness at all. So if any of u suffer dont let this put u iff. I was really surprised. My best vr experience yet.
Just got this game for free wasn't sure how I would like it. But I fired it up and holy shit it is fun as hell!!! Any excuse to jump into the VR world I'm up for it!! It still doesnt beat the experience you get with Ace Combat despite only having 3 missions 😡😡😡!! That game is by far my favorite VR experience of any Playstation game yet!! Hoping they release some more content for it!! But anyway this game is a very pleasant surprise!!
I'd be puking the moment you started moving. I love VR, but for me, I can't even dream of playing something like this unless I get a sea sickness patch from my doctor.
Disappointing that the reviewer stuck with the default comfort settings for the in-cockpit view. You can remove the blinds completely and if you “Lock camera to pilot”, you get the full sensation of the craft banking, barrel-rolling, etc. For bonus experience, turn the bizarrely named “Field of View” on to make the craft lurch forward authentically when travelling over a speed arrow.
That visor that apears can be removed in VR setting. I recommend turning it off and setting camera to center on track for best experience without it being too crazy to follow whats happening.
I love how they didn't take a lazy approach to this update. It really feels like the game was released with VR in the first place, and it's an incredible experience! Edit: I lot of PSVR games appear very fuzzy, even on PS4 Pros. But even with my standard console, it looks much clearer than any game that comes to mind (maybe Sparc?) When comparing captured videos from Wipeout to, for example, Skyrim, the difference is night and day. Hopefully we'll see more Wipeout-tier VR titles in the future.
This is a rock solid VR experience, I have been playing so many hours multiplayer in VR with this game now, my favourite PSVR game next to Dirt Rally :)
I'm sure it's not fully stereoscopic 3d though. Obviously the ship you're in is, but if you pause the game, and look at the track with one eye then the other, you'll notice it looks exactly the same thru each eye. Look at a bit of the track in the foreground in relation to something further away, u can see there no stereoscopic 3d, again just the track, not the ship.
this is everything you want in a vr game. it's incredible. wait till you hit your first downhill. take the blinders off the cockpit so you can out the sides and the front of your ship. better race experience.
DooM has a "4K" patch on PS4 Pro. Please do some pixel peeping to see if it is anywhere close to 2160p. (My guess is a dynamic scale between 1440p - 1620p; maybe 1800p staring at walls)
I tried Redout in VR and didn't like it at all. Going to check this out at a mates on Tuesday. It'll be interesting to see how Wipeout got it right compared with Redout
Always easy to find out which of the people commented here never played anything in VR. They are in most cases a bit to excited about games like this. The other ones who already tried out Driveclub VR, Redout (on PC), Project Cars and Gran Turismo VR like me, are a bit more cautious, they know how easily you can get motion sick by games like this. My advice, if you never tried anything in VR don't(!), really don't(!) turn of all of the comfort features right at start. First play with them, and after a few hours maybe try with out. Don't care if someone calls you a chicken if you play with them. Motion Sickness could affect everybody, regardless of the amount of testosterone in your body.
Why do you chalk that the people excited for games like these "never played anything in VR"? Are you saying that everyone gets motion sickness like you? Why not trust that each interested individual knows if they are affected by it or not, or the fact that just like there are people who suffer motion sickness with fast moving games there are also those who do not?
You dont need VR legs to play this. Turn OFF the comfort settings and move your head like you would in real life, and it's fine. it's easy to tell your mind you are "sitting in the ship". Oh unless you're a tool and you're using "external" view. VR is for "simulation". Cockpit all the way. I can play this non stop for as long as I want will NO ill feeling. Doom VFR or Skyrim however, I can't last more than 10 mins. oh and also......I'm not on a Pro PS4. I'm on initial release 500GB PS4 and it works fine with this game in PSVR. It's a FANTASTIC game. A VR system seller for sure.
You can turn off the blinders during cockpit view. I’m not sure why you didn’t look into the VR options before publishing this video.

That's true but at least mention it. People who cover vr games never seem to know anything about the comfort options.
iCABBAGESi agreed. Not helping with coverage for vr

Scotty exactly... Silly mistake.
It wasn't a criticism. It was a compliment. He pointed out that this effect made it feel more enthralling.
I dont get that problem tbh i guess im just used to cockpits from flight and space sims it feels luxurious the cockpit on wipeout to me lol
The VR motion blinders can be removed BTW as well as adding cockpit tilt, all makes it even more like being there! :D
What an INTENSE analysis

fenbekus PS8 Tech reviews incoming.

Time-Exclusive
Ioannis Stefanakis its a timed exclusive. That is just a fact. Not wishfull thinking.
in couple of days PS VR prices drop to just 300 euros with controllers + DOOM VR game.. permanently
Farpoint, Skyrim VR, The Last Guardian demo, Moss and now this. Sony seems to be really dedicated to VR gaming right now.
If you listen closely, you can hear some vitas dying in the distance. Let's hope they stick with it. Affordable VR is what we need.
You were playing with the blinders on Richard, it's a comfort setting you can remove.
Nice!! Would love to see more PSVR analysis in the future :)
Excellent video of a truly jaw dropping game thanks.
Get well soon, @Richard!
Nice analysis, really cool content as always on Digital Foundry. 👍🏻
I bought this game yesterday, wanting to get down with the PSVR mode. I should have bought it months ago, it’s great! What a blast and so beautiful running on my 4K TV.
Fair dues to Sony for making this a free update, while also doing an awesome job in actually implementing it!
You can get the full view in cockpit by disabling the comfort feature. I found it much better personally and removes that clostaphobic feeling
Absolutely amazing experience playing this in VR. It was already a great game but holy shit, this upgrade takes it over the top!
E Magid completely agree possibly the best VR game and it's a free update.

Finally some PSVR coverage... Thanks!!
Tempting to upgrade to a Pro over my standard PS4. The X might be more powerful, but absolutely no games on Xbox for the foreseeable future... :(
The best place to play Xbox games is on PC, even though, Windows Store and UWP sucks balls, but at least you can play those at 60 fps unlike on Xbox One X.
I upgraded, gave my old unit to a buddy, and never looked back
Yeah, man. Got my gaming PC setup. Forza Horizon 3 was great... although I had to download it three times through that stupid Microsoft Store before it would work. Lol.
Mmm, it's tempting. Does the resolution upgrade make much difference? On my 55" TV, Gran Turismo Sport is starting to look a little low res.
There's Crackpipe 3 coming and um... uh... Well there's bound to be another Halo at some point.
Bethesda take notes: it’s a free update to those who already have the game!
Haven't played WipEout on a while, But I remember being awesome on PS3, 1080p 60fps, It was also cool on the PSVITA.
You should get it on PS4. 3 games for $30. Amazing value. Best racing game out IMO.
its best in vr
Superb on PS4, Pro, AND VR. What a gem. Major kudos to the devs.
Man, this was the best, most in depth review of this amazing port I have read.. I love how you broke down the frame rate. Well done. Liked and Subbed!
Turn the blinders off and lock to pilot. Those with weak stomachs, bring a bucket. This game is great.
Been playing it in VR for a few hours now! It’s amazing!!
I get motion sick real quick. Cant play rigs at all without feeling ill . I played this solid for hours and no motion sickness at all. So if any of u suffer dont let this put u iff. I was really surprised. My best vr experience yet.
Yeah, you can set the cockpit to be fully open, and you really should. It looks amazing, and is actually much more comfortable than external view.
Put it in pilot perspective and get rid of the blinders for the best experience.
Greatness Awaits😁
I'd be puking the moment you started moving. I love VR, but for me, I can't even dream of playing something like this unless I get a sea sickness patch from my doctor.
Meanwhile Microsoft giving you kraken with no body
Microsoft has VR headset too ....
Adrian nope, it has AR
Their VR headset can't even be used on the One or even One X so why mention it?
Disappointing that the reviewer stuck with the default comfort settings for the in-cockpit view. You can remove the blinds completely and if you “Lock camera to pilot”, you get the full sensation of the craft banking, barrel-rolling, etc. For bonus experience, turn the bizarrely named “Field of View” on to make the craft lurch forward authentically when travelling over a speed arrow.
Turn the enclosed cockpit off in the options. Played this for 2 hours last night's. It's amazing!!!
will be playing this for days..
That visor that apears can be removed in VR setting. I recommend turning it off and setting camera to center on track for best experience without it being too crazy to follow whats happening.
Never seen a 720p DigitalFoundry in years.
You can remove the blinders in the interior view. It really is a blast like that
Great analysis!Wait until Zone of enders PSVR comes out, that game is gonna be amazing as well.
For those on PC Redout is a similar game that works great in VR. BallisticNG looks like it's coming in VR too.
So when are we getting a new Wipeout game, Sony? Oh never mind, you closed down Psygnosis/Studio Liverpool six years ago!
Psygnosis were great I loved team buddies on the psx.
Who cares this is all the wipe out we need dick face
PARANOIA!!! It was a great shame actually look up the history
I enjoy Wipeout but was never going to get this one.
Until I heard about the VR, now I'm definitely getting it!
I mainly game on my one x but also love my pro and VR. Can't wait to play this later.
Man my head start banging to the soundtrack in the cockpit and I was in nirvana. Never even played a Wipeouts.
A conversion to PSVR 2, please, Sony.
You have to turn off the comfort settings to get rid of the tunnel vision in first person.
So far the best vr title. For the best action in the cockpit view, turn that comfort setting off.
You can remove the tie fighter like blinders, these are comfort options. More research next time. If you remove the blinders you can see EVERYTHING
So you couldn't be bothered to go into the VR settings in the game and show viewers that the cockpit canopy effect can be removed? Good job!
Why dont try confort options off and camera to fix at pilot head?you full view inside of the cockpit and the inmersión decime...WOW¡¡¡¡please try it
I wish they'd bring back Extreme G
Ben Gibson, I agree. Even a remastered trilogy would be great
I wish they would make more VR games that use the 3rd person view like this so you can see the character in front of you rather than only 1st person
FINALLY SOME PSVR LOVE IN DF!!!!!!!
I thought you only cared about Xonex and PUBG now.
I love this game on my Pro as it is, can’t wait to get PSVR
DooM has a "4K" patch on PS4 Pro. Please do some pixel peeping to see if it is anywhere close to 2160p.
(My guess is a dynamic scale between 1440p - 1620p; maybe 1800p staring at walls)
Seeing this would be painful for Xbox One only users. No exciting exclusives like this, and no VR to go with it.
Simply the best PSVR game (with ASTRO) !! Awesome, Astonishing , Spectacular, Immersive, Fast and Fluide !
Wish interpolation can be applied to normal 30fps games to 60 fps without much compromise. Seems to be very tricky technology.
Why is this video capped at 720p60?
And this is done with the remains of Studio Liverpool working on this title elsewhere, feel good about closing them down now Sony?
Turn off the comfort settings and go first-person. Play it how it's meant to be played, in the cockpit!....It's fantastic like that!
Wipeout VR is astounding. It may very well be the single greatest gaming experience I've ever had. Just get it.
why is it only 720p?
BritishActionGamer VR is demanding.
Its not actually 720p, psvr is 960x1080 per eye making a total of 1080p, but the image you see is 960x1080.
Learn your facts moron.
Props to the devs that made this a free update and not one that needs to be purchased for a worse version of the game!
Hmm... I didn't the slightest hint of motion sickness playing this for at least an hour. I was expecting to, but was pleasantly surprised.
You can turn the blinders off to get the full FOV.
