Excellent as always. If you've never seen the documentary "no day like today", about Jonathan Larson and the making of RENT, it is a must-see. Wonderful and tragic at the same time.

As an actor RENT, is and will always be my show! I saw it on Broadway a few years before getting my HIV diagnosis, and swear that knowing the show so well gave me the strength to know that I would survive. So good to see this interview with Anthony. x

What a stellar interview with this icon! Anthony is one of the best and I enjoyed hearing more about his story. Seeing RENT in Chicago was a pivotal moment in my life, along with viewing the AIDS Memorial Quilt in person, and a haunting exhibit at Chicago's Armory of first-person testimonies of the human destruction from AIDS. This interview with Anthony Rapp brought back so many memories. I think I'll have to go watch RENT now for the 100th time.

Wow, I would have loved to go to that exhibit. It’s so crazy, it just so happened that RENT was in Los Angeles this past weekend too, so I went to go see it again, and wow, truly my favorite musical ever. It is so touching and poignant. ❤️

Thank you for the great interview. I remember when Anthony came out in the Advocate. It took me until this year to see the movie Rent. I loved when they brought in the older performers of the musical. It was great to see Anthony Rapp. I didn’t realize the guy who wrote it died and so quickly after the started it. I am glad his mom saw him perform. I could tell from the interview that it was a great moment for him.

When I was a teen and haven't came out yet. Anthony was my first crush, his such a beautiful soul, wonderful and talented actor and singer. So handsome and I still have a major crush on him. I went to see a play he done in 2014 in NYC and I met him for the first time. I was so nervous I accidentally crushed the brochure in my hand and when I had him sign it he said it's wrinkled lol. I am still amazed by him.

Yes, the idea that in the mid 1990s, except for Rent, musical theater was not dealing with real true to life events, is fairly accurate and though it was uncommon there were a few exceptions. For example, in 1993 there was Blood Brothers, a musical drama about twin brothers raised separately that explores the wealth gap and suffocating class system of contemporary England; The Song of Jacob Zulu, about racism in Apartied South Africa; then in 1994 there wasn't really anything too serious unless you count The Rise and Fall of Little Voice as a musical, which many do not and classify it as a play with music. Then in 1995, there was nothing serious, then in 1996 we got Rent. Although, let's recall too, there were important dramatic plays all through that time, including Love, Valor, Compassion, A Delicate Balance, Buried Child, Angels In America etc, because straight plays tackling contemporary issues is just more expected. But when you really think about it, it is pretty true that musical theater does not grapple with contemporary issues in contemporary settings almost any year. It's usually safer to confront or sneak contemporary issues in a period piece context, like, in a musical ,for instance, Jelly's Last Jam, New York New York, Steel Pier, Spring Awakening, and Some Like It Hot. I think maybe Stephen Sondheim's Company is one of those shows that always feels "contemporary" no matter what decade it is set in. There were two different productions of Company in the mid 1990s.

Florida is excellent for gay people. Ft. Lauderdale. Texas is great too. Any rural area even in NY is not great. Infant, there are hoods in NYC which are extremely homophobic and dangerous.
