Debt collection scams on the rise -- here is simple trick to make the calls stop

- Here's my suggestion based on what has worked for twenty years. The types of debt collection scams change but here is the solution. These scammers will threaten jail, garnishing without a judgment, etc.
Insist they mail you a letter explaining the debt.
Legitimate companies (even ones that routinely violate the law) will do this.
But the scammers won't -- they are terrified of sending fraudulent mail across state lines.
They will kick and scream but when they realize you won't pay them until you can get something in the mail (not email, not fax, not text but mail), then they will move on.
These scammers can't be sued as they are not real companies -- instead they get your info usually off the dark web so they have your contact info and social, etc. but they have no right to collect the debt.
If by chance they are legit, then you will have a fabulous lawsuit against them for violating the FDCPA (Fair Debt Collection Practices Act).

It's a different story when they get your HR involved and make you look bad, and gaslight you into believing it's real.
Yes that's happen to me as well. My supervisor was great a out she told them off. She knew it was a crock, but wanted to inform. I said are u going to let me go. She said of course not.
A scam company called me, and they block my number once I start asking questions. I requested that they emailed me a letter proving the debt, and they got angry saying that the county will serve me lawsuit papers. There is no case filed for me in the county. I WISH that we could expose and punish these scam companies.
I just went through this with some company called Providian and the tower group. It’s awful what these people are doing.

Thanks for this information. I have been dealing with a scam calling my phone, work and my ex husband. I finally got them to say who the debt was for and called them and they assured me, I had no debt with them. They are aggressive and scary. I feel bad for the elderly who don't know any better.

I would say this, there is no bill I pay without using my credit card, so these scammers are practically out of luck.

It's been a while for me, but I never received a call for money I may owe, until I receive something in writing.
That's good -- the scammers are still out there but the phone companies in the last year have done a good job marking calls as potential scammers so I think the phone is less effective for these guys...
I got one of these call they threatened to garnish my work wages. They said can settle $300.00 instead of $1700.00. I was like send me letter the person got irritated. I can send u email I say ok. I check email nothing. What a crock. I could never work for a place that scams people.
This was very informative! I had some person call my sister about a debt they say I owe from 2016. Of course everything should be paid today or I will be getting served by the end of the day. Even if that were true wouldn't the statute of limitations have run out by now??

Thx for the advice I been getting a call from scamer called dra saying i.owe a payday loan which I never had a payday loan in my life I block their number next day they call back on another number I check my credit report report nothing on there about this company and I also check the better business breau all say this is not business so I will take ur advice and try that
I been getting a lot of these debt collectors calls all the time on my voicemail on my phone
Mediation account center has been harassing me for years...so far they have called over 200 times from 11 different numbers and they won't stop calling no matter what

@@johngwatts they claim i took out a loan. I have emails from all different amounts from different dates as well. They are scammers but I will reach out to the link you provided.

just call the place you got the loan from. they will send you down the line to the place you can pay. match up the company, sometimes youll have to go down the line of 3 or more companies to reach the company you can pay...
Problem is the original creditor can tell you the company they sold it to but often that company has transferred it and you may have multiple companies claiming to own the debt at the same time. I've had consumers sued, at the same time, in two different lawsuits, for the exact same debt. Both swearing to own the debt. Someone is lying so consumers have to be careful when not dealing with the original creditor.

@@johngwatts the first one in the line of companies is the one who can take the payment. i know what youre saying and i have seen that too, but that only happens with out of statute debt and you cant be sued for that anyway. thanks for the reply! i love collections
honestly the first scam is the person who took the money and never paid it back after signing an agreement that you would adhere to the terms. if youre ignoring and throwing out bills sent through the mail then you probably deserve a more harsh call to finally get you to handle your responsibilities.
impersonating government or police, or being theatened with jail is definitely over the line though.
You should pay your bills. If you don't, you face the consequences. Debt collectors should follow the law. If they don't, they face the consequences.
Not unfair to anyone and no surprises.
Kind of like this -- say you were speeding by 10 mph. Get pulled over and get a ticket. A week before court date the court passes judgment on you and sentences you to 40 years in prison.
True, you should not have been speeding. But this is no excuse for the court to violate the court date and to impose a harsher punishment than allowed by law.

@@johngwatts i completely agree. the law is set up this way to avoid loan shark type tactics. basically if you cant afford to loan the money then you shouldnt loan it. and if you call and they cant pay then thats the risk you take when you loan money out. the laws are set up to keep people from being harrassed. i completely agree with you John.
asking for a letter and all that is just a stall tactic so you can keep ignoring the bill... if you actually were going to pay you wouldnt ask for a letter so you can call them when you get it! You would call the place you got the loan from to find out how to pay. you ask for a letter just so you can throw it out again which is why they wont send one because they know youre wasting their time.
Actually asking for a letter is the prudent thing to do. The scammers won't send a letter through the mail. The real companies do and if the info matches up -- right debt, etc. -- then you can make arrangements to pay.
@@johngwatts i know where you are comkng from. i dont completely agree but there is no one size fits all. i prefer the method of calling the original creditor and following down the line so i know they are the right person. anyone can fake a letter and especially the average consumer does not know what to look for as green flags or red flags. but thats my opinion. if you are scamming someone, whats to stop you from creating a fake letter?
Look, there are plenty of bottom feeder scammers that harrass people that don't owe the debt. You can't argue with these jerks,.so for you to say just pay the debt is out of line..
Have you ever heard of Titan Capital Services , they are stating I owe on something I have never received in the mail and as well this amount and company it’s not even on my credit !! They are saying that if I don’t pay by 11/1/2020 they will send the paperwork to my county to process .
I have not heard of them. I would see if they will send you information through the mail. When they try to rush you to make a payment, it is not a good sign.
I requested something mail or email and they said they could send it to me until today , I spoke to this gentlemen yesterday around 8pm , it was just so odd I asked him questions regarding this account and he would mumble . I also have an appointment on Friday with an attorney .
I know my debt, I know the loans I have and who is in charge of them. Be knowledgeable of your situation and if you have the time answer the call and waste their time!

If you guys ever get a call from R&R solution inc.. don’t say anything ,there really good scam artists they have a website, and they provide proof .. but ask them what R&R stands for lol

@@johngwatts they make it up.. the proof is not even professional looking.. looks like it was done with Microsoft word. I tried to look up the number it lead me to some rent an office space website.. I would think if you googled a company it would show up, I got NOTHING, the number they had dident even match up with the website it was 2 separate things
