- A compilation of unmarked police, fire and EMS vehicles responding in New York City including three different shots of police taxis (one of which is a Nissan), Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptors, CVPI of the New York City Police Department NYPD. There are also police vans, detectives and what is probably an unmarked unit of the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission enforcement division. Great collection.

These newer unmarked squads really blend in. Even with a unmarked crown vic, it still said "COP". But these newer unmarked squads seem to say... "aunt betty". Cool vid.

Bruhhhh the undercover taxi, i accidentally got in and when the cop turned around he asked 'where you going?' until he turned on his siren, I was so shook
I remember being in mid town Manhattan and there was a shooting and two cabs that were really cop cars showed up.

Always look for radio antenna's on the trunk area....most undercover vehicles are ford or chevy...also the lights in the rear window area....no rims....basic blacked out wheels...

I know this is New York, but when do you ever see Taxi Crown Vics? They are sadly uncommon now, and those Nissans and Toyotas took over it's long running place. I recalled taxis loved the Vic so much, they even used Grand Marquises every once in a while.

Are those cars police properties or can detectives can equip their private vehicles with lights and sirens and use it while on duty?
Dept property very likely, if i recall. I used to live near 2 precincts and they park those impalas and crown vics right in front of station overnight
Nothing annoys me more than unmarks that have small, hard to notice light sets because the depts are either too lazy or dumb to realize people will have a hard time noticing them without a sufficient amount of lights scattered around the unmarked vehicle

They use the siren only on urgent occurrences. Less urgent occurrences are used only lights.

En fait, aux USA (ça dépend aussi des états je pense) il y a plusieurs priorités lorsque la police répond à une urgence : code 1 = pas de lumière ni de sirène ; code 2 = juste les gyrophares, LED et autres lumières ; code 3 = sirènes + gyrophares.

aumenarys Exact, il y'a également le code 6; recherche/filature lors d'une intervention, comme le code 1. Si je ne me trompe pas (que quelqu'un me corrige sinon) peu importe l'Etat, les codes 1,2,3 sont utilisés partout aux USA, je regarde beaucoup de vidéos d'interventions dans différents État et ça m'a l'air d'être une sorte de norme. En France nous utilisions ces codes également :)
What's the use for the unmarked taxi/police cars?
A month late but generally everyone knows about unmarked cars, they know what to look for even though it's hard to notice (or should be). No one expects a taxi to be an unmarked car and it blends in with the other taxis around it. It's like one step above unmarked.

Two Specific tall-tale signs: Low ride height and multiple antennas.
Thats it. Also some will have numbered license plates but that is not a guarantee.
Watch for multiple antennas. I pulled up to one ford explorer downhill but then I saw the antennas, i immediately knew not to go any faster, check all common police vehicles and other vehicles and look for their antenna locations. If it has more than one dome or long antenna lines or has stubby-type receivers. Thats a cop. Watch out.
Look for multiple mirrors too. Also the standard steel blackened hubcaps is a good sign of a cop too. Also look for bars on the windows.
Thats about it.
When I was a cop our unmarked cars didn't have any signs they were cop cars. They had standard plates, no additional radio antennas, no bars on the window, nothing. The radios were hand held radios that snapped into special mounts that turned them into car mounted radios which let them recharge and gave us a hand held mic. The antenna looked like a cellular phone antenna that was extremely common in the early 2000's. For lighting, we had strobes concealed in the head lights and tail lights and a strobe light mounted on the visor so it can be flipped down when needed and hidden when not. None of our cars had blackened hub caps, not even our marked ones. If a department wants to conceal their car, they can easily do so.

They also tend to dim the windows darker and the trunks usually have a little key hole on the right that normal cars don’t and the Taurus’s usually have a different grille

Well, not always.. there were Jeeps and Nissans too in this video. Also, people like the anti crime unit, TLC, Federal, etc. all have been known to use cars like Chryslers, Hondas, Hyundais, Volkswagens, Jeeps, GMC, and more.
Half of these are just impersonators who are trying to get through traffic.
It baffles me why so many weren't using their sirens or horns. Lights of course won't always catch the eye so why not brieflly use horns and sirens?
If they had an emergency call, the rumbler surely would sound off and rattle everyone on the street - those things used to scare me from 5 blocks away
