I owned a dreamcast. It was ahead of its time. Awesome machine in it's day.
Dreamcast didn’t seem or it wasn’t ahead of its time it used 1 GB GD-ROM discs, 200 MHz CPU, 100 MHz GPU, 16 MB SDRAM or Main RAM unlike GameCube, GBA, PS2, Xbox they seem or were ahead of its time
@@jasonlee7816 Dreamcast came out in the 1990s. The 2000s consoles are irrelevant when we're talking about being ahead of its time. You say "PS2 is not ahead of its time cuz PS3 is more powerful" absolute doofus take.
Yeah, really a shame SEGA had such bad marketing in comparison to the competition. The games and the controller with the memory stick and lcd screen were on another level for that time.
There were a lot of discs going around in magazines and inside other retail games that included an internet browser. The Dreamcast has a special place in my heart. Great games and the first introduction of ARCADE quality games to the living room. Will never forget the first time I saw Soulcalibur, something I only saw in ARCADES back then, in from of me at a friend's house. Amazing times! No updates/day-one patches needed. Pure game development ART!
I've got bootdisks and some home brew games (that I didn't write) that are sort of interesting... :-)
That’s how I felt with Crazy Taxi. Still amazed Dreamcast sold so poorly despite how GOOD the software was!
I am glad you replaced those caps. The difference was easy to see after you put the new ones on. The were bulky all of them.
Agreed! I’ve not recapped mine as I’ve read message board posts claiming they’ve seen many boards and none had bulging caps. Well I trust TronicsFix and video proof more than a message board!
It looks like the battery was already replaced as I see a vertical battery holder. The original battery was a tabbed one that was soldered to that board. The DC uses a rechargeable coin cell and if you don't power on and use the console, it will drain the battery. But it isn't likely bad and just needs to be left on for a bit to charge back up. But yeah, I think they will only hold the date/time for about a month if not used often.
Ok nerd 😂don’t worry I’m a nerd yo but the Rc kind I also have a huge collection of retro Rc and I also memorized all the components and schematic and the board circuitry
One helpful hint when you put the lid back on, make sure you have lid open because you can snap the little sensor on the disc drive off very easily when it’s closed
I recently had to repair the fan on my VAO Dreamcast where the heatsink is attached to the motherboard. After watching some videos it looked to be mostly just basic screws and it was like building with Lego's. Surprisingly easy to fix and now it works like a charm. Great system ahead of its time!
Just wanted to say again how great it is that you recover these older electronics. Really enjoy both the diagnostic and repair processes that you guide us through. Do you have a list of the most common tools in your workshop (ie, fume hood, heat tweezers, cleaners, cleaning brushes, flux dispensers, etc)? Maybe you could do a walkthough of your workshop for one episode? Thanks again for sharing your methods and philosophy of keeping these devices operational and not e-waste.
it's amazing how many old devices are able to be revived by a good cleaning and putting a fresh belt/rubber band on whatever drives whatever inside. Sometimes I open a thing and it's fine except the old drive belt or whatnot rotted away.
I only know a few things but I know them well.
Go with a low solids/no clean flux pen. Kester (not an affiliate) makes pretty much any flux that can be put in a pen, in a pen. Only if I need the thick rosin flux for something (it's rare, it's a pain to clean up excessive amounts of it) do I break out a squeeze bottle/syringe. It's really hard to find solid core solder but if you can find fine gauge solder at all, grab it. Big chunky solder with a LOT of flux inside it is easy to find.
Soldering stations: Hakko/Weller or close knockoffs if you can't afford a couple hundred bucks to move up to Metcal or JB Tools (not an affiliate with any). Desoldering stations are cool but require specific maintenance and there's little you can't do with a good solder sucker and desoldering wick/braid. If you have to worry about noise/EMI at your station, Metcal uses an RF circuit to speed up tip heating, which works amazing, but it also sprays noise (it will ruin your scope or analyzer measurements if you're near it).
Always cover your tip with fresh solder before putting away; it saves the plating on your tips from sitting bare and oxidizing while it cools down. It's a big debate but I stopped using a sponge to clean the tip ages ago - to me, it punishes my tip plating with the thermal/moisture cycling and I also got tired of having to program in a tiny pause for reheat every time I needed to get some gunk off it. I use the "brass wool" type of cleaner and if you have oxidation really water is working against you where keeping it dry and fluxing/tinning to make sure you're getting adhesion to the now clean tip (do not use sandpaper, razor/exacto knives, etc to clean tips, it wrecks the plating, killing the usability and lifespan) will get your tip cleanest, fastest.
Get a good set of attachments to go with a hand/small vacuum. Vacuum *then* airblast if you have to, keeps bigger chunks from driving in and under components/into connectors.
You can afford a decent Fluke meter if you have 75 USD to throw; "true RMS" is your key words there, the 100 series has it, so it's good enough for general bench use and they last long on a battery/charge as well as durable/well made. Watch out for counterfeits; always register your tools/send in warranty cards if the option exists.
You might have to lubricate the parts that move the lens, the two little bars under the lens. That might be why it makes that noise.
It makes that noise because it is a Dreamcast. That is a mechanical lens moving assembly. Even with lubrication it will still make noise.
@stephenshelottiii3272
Correct but is also an old console, so lubrication could or might be a good idea.
@@Conocimiento_Es_Poder. i agree. That is why i said even with lubricant it will make noise. I am speaking from experience.
The dreamcast had a MODEM, that's what that device with the phone jack is.
Scary how old we are to know about modems :)
I never knew they had them 😮 that’s actually kinda cool
Yeah lol I even wanted Dreamcast when I was a kid bc I thought it was cooler than my ps1 and thought it had better games & modem included for internet... Pretty impressive console for late 90s anyway
It's called an RJ45 jack in the UK
@UserUser-ww2nj RJ9 is 4 pin phone jack, RJ11 is 6 pin phone jack and RJ45 is 8 pin ethernet jack.
The Dreamcast had an RJ9.
Hot soldering tweezers work pretty good.
I really need to buy some...I'm just a hobbyist, but I replace these caps all the time...
@@brucepreston3927 I know. Right?
Haha, love the reaction to the LOUD disc drive. That really just is how the Dreamcast sounds!
I remember giving Vince a warning over a Dreamcast he was fixing for one of his videos as he was jabbing at power board stuff with his fingers and how he didn't get zapped escapes me, I think he took notice as he began being a bit more cautious with angry pixie stuff as I wasn't the only one saying about it in the comments lol
Hey! Looking better! Seeing forward to your full recovery
My friend had one back in the day. First console to test the waters of online gaming, want to say its dialup, but maybe DSL.
In the first few months, his disk drive wouldn't work unless you stood the console up on its side. 😂
Good to see you on the mend..in another video you looked like you had one foot in the grave , I admire you for having the guts to make videos even being sick. 👊🏼
I love the content you are putting out. Restoring old electronics is preserving history in a sense, so thank you for doing this and inspiring others to try. Also, I am enjoying watching your videos an seeing your health returning. I have been praying for your recovery. Looking forward to more videos.
Just found the “longs” channel. Made my whole day. Thank you brother! You’re a true legend.
Dreamcast is one of my favorite consoles. Awesome video!
It was the Modem you removed in the beginning. That bad soldier job I think that chip is replaced in order to make the colole region free.
I've fixed a few Dreamcast systems by adjusting the laser but, it's just a temporary fix because the laser is weak and was burning out, and by adjusting the potentiometer which it gives the laser more power will give it a little more life but, puts the laser out of spec and the laser will eventually burn out soon.
Glad to see you're looking better, love this channel!
Love the Dreamcast
common for the CD drive to mess up on them, i had one were you had to open and close the CD drive till i started reading the disc, once that was done it read all discs till the next time it was turned off. it from the dream cast games not being on a CD and being read at a higher speed so when you use copied games on them it will mess the CD drive over time.
Man with the light you got as soon as you flipped that cdrom board could see those bulging caps.
I believe pressing the power button repeatedly while it’s unplugged should drain the capacitors from any residual charge.
21:31 Per the manual, the battery needs recharged every 20 days or so. Procedure upon a new battery is to run it for two hours for full charge. You’ll find many people online who lament a “dead” new battery after a month, but it wasn’t used enough to charge it.
No point to replace at all in a console that is rarely used!
Don't you miss the days where it was only 4 screws and not insane to open mannnn.... Those were the days😟😟
I mean, these were the days when companies WANTED you to be able to repair a system, because they wanted it to last a long time. They wanted you to know they were proud of what they made so that you would have confidence that it would last. Nowadays, if you so much at look at a console wrong, something breaks, usually in a way that can't be repaired.
@@kattriella1331 I know it's sad and pathetic 😞
This console is rare, even in Japan. Nice find!
You know you _could_ use the twist method for those caps... you'd avoid the plastic melting completely and it would be a lot faster and safer for the pads.
Adrian over at Adrians Digital Basement uses that method and he's never ripped a pad or even been at risk of melting the plastic.
Nice lazer fix, nice capacitor replacement, good to see you're doing better too. Cheers.
My DC had that problem with the disk not wanting to spin all the way up. I took the lid off and the switch you where holding to spin the disc I Bw100 that bad boy a bunch of times and cured the problem.
Had the bios chip added to make it region free. I wonder if they used a boot disc to play import games. I remember back in the day it would slam the drive back while using it
Definitely awesome
Hey man your looking healthier.Thats great
I have one of those still new in box. I thought about opening it to play some Dreamcast games but will probably just pickup a loose Dreamcast.
Surprised by how good the chip soldering job looked under the microscope. It looked horrible with naked eye.
Cool fix, a bit difficult but like always you came through! Beginning to wonder if there is a console you. Cant fix! 😅
Awesome video as allways
Glad you liked it!
Modem was probably a 56k modem. Before high speed internet there was this thing called "dial-up service" where you would plug your 56k modem into your house phone jack to get internet service. Back in the day, homes had telephones that plugged into a wall jack. This was before mobile phones took over the world. The Dreamcast had phantasy star online that used the modem.
This is a cool system never seen anything like it before. Never cared much for dreamcast other than crazy taxi and some sniper game.
I was working at Toys R Us when the dreamcast came out. That thing bombed fast.
Cool yet another console saved, thumb's up ! Also glad that your seem to be doing bether. Would be nice to see some moding maybe
my first guess was the potentiometer, i have a gamecube and a couple of ps1's with the same issue awaiting to be repaired.
To quote the immortal “Crash Override” aka “Zero Cool”, RISC is good!
Back in the day the internet was only supplied through phone lines. I used to have a PS2 with the network adapter and it was connected to the internet through the phone lines.
Might have to buy one of these for my missus 😂
Amazing
That's a Bios Chip mod. You can do some cool stuff with it and play Any region games as well. If it's updated go to settings and press start for Options on the Chip.
well that explains why the kid working at GameStop was so stoked when it came in - she was showing it to all the customers and just gushing when all I wanted was my dreamcast to stfu and stop sounding like it was grinding every disc ;-)
(yes, still have it and have amassed a pretty sizeable collection of games, when same GameStops were going out of business they were dumping ALL DC content for a buck or two a game, new or used, didn't matter)
Great days of Crazy taxi and Shenmue on the Dreamcast.
I might have added a bit of lube on the slides of that laser too, might have stopped some of those gridy noises
It's the modem !
Those caps def needed replacing. Clean the laser lens?
Can you order replacement fuses or do you need a donor board? For instance if a fuse goes missing or bad on a 3ds motherboard
Nice
Cool
Oh man way to make me feel old with not recognizing the 56k modem 😅
Dumb question but could use WD on a screw without messing up the mother board?
Still have my Dreamcast. Finding out you can burn ROMs to disc and they'll play, (on game's you own already of course) and all the games like Atomiswave stuff being ported over by Modders got me to dust it off a few years ago.
Curious if you've ever encountered or have heard of Dreamcast consoles causing scratches/damage to the discs while playing? If so what may be the cause?
I remember having to mod mine because Skies of Arcadia wouldn't run on my machine nor Illbleed and I got quite involved including working with the Linux project amongst things and some work with the Xbox pulling out the Dreamcast core games like Sega GT which could if you modded the wrapper of, run perfectly fine on a DC as Windows CE was a superb table to lay for hence why you could play PS1 games on a DC and all the 32, 16 and 8 bit consoles a breeze to emulate. I have just modded one of my Xbox Ones to do the emulation thing and got a PS3 incoming for free which I might do some naughties to hehe
Sad thing aside from a bit of BASIC, I couldn't code if me life depended on it, one of my crowning glories was I wrote a complete database for a bank in my lunch break because their one was so shitey and I made it modular, seamless self replicating and was used for mortgages and shares stuff for the bank who gave me £500 for my time which back then I was OMG so much money... not realising that I was pretty much robbed but this was the eighties and I was green AF. Back in 2000 going into my own branch the manager called up the system and I asks him did he know who wrote that, he did not and I said look at the 4 letters bottom of menu page... my initials and a (c) 1987 or 88 I think it was... he was gobsmacked lol Green me also rued not putting a backdoor in hehe joking as doing that not really interested me, their monkeys their circus.
That mod is so that the console will effectively be region free. It can read games from all over the world.
My uncle had a dreamcast. It had good titles, but I didn't actually play it, much.
That thing sounded like a terminator shutting down lol
My Dreamcast disc would not spin up. I need to adjust the little screw on the laser to fix it.
Is there a reason you don't use helping hands on these tasks?
Arn’t all the vias corroded on that board, they are all blue?
the Lens Motor needs to be relined with a small tiny screw driver if that's the issue
Never going to forget that in a different video, you called this the Genesis.... twice.
I meant to say The bar that is connected to the motor where the lens is located.
Dreamcast was a good gaming console only if it took off like xbox and ps2 if they would release a new Sega in 2024 i would definitely buy it ❤❤
Dreamcast failed because Sega chose GD-ROM discs instead of DVD disc media PS2 and Xbox had
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Unless you have the resettable fuse fix on the controller board NEVER plug in the controller or unplug it while the power is on, it'll blow the board and make the controller ports not function. Just a pro tip.
It was the owner's 'modification' work...i thkught if that when he first opened it and was like wooaaa that is NOT ok lol
first lol! i bet im gonna love this video
Haha, man I miss the early 2000s. Thanks for bringing it back.
Screen was in English - a bit odd for a Japanese only machine?
It's a modem
I been looking for a sega dreamcast.
Playstation should do this just four screws lol imagine it on the ps5 pro 😂😂😂
4:54 🎉🎉🎉🎉
That looks not great.....❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Are we able to send you game consoles that we want repaired?
Hmm a phone jack on a console. What in the world could it possibly be
I would have just cleansed the lense to start with
its an old school modem
SoLder, there's a lot in solder . It's not soder ..
Works or doesnt, that sound is not good.
i just thinking, your recording little bit darker while under microscope camera.
can't you just short the power supply capacitors to render them harmless?
YOU ARE NOT YOUNG ENOUGH TO NOT KNOW WHAT DIAL UP INTERNET WAS XD haha
from memory that is (an attempt at) a region free mod to the disc drive
Can't go wrong with kitty. Meow.
hey, would you look at that. youre not a nazi anymore. good for you
DId he really not know what a modem was?
dont bald
that was a modem bro. are you to young?
lol
I'm 33 and even I knew but then surely he should if researched the console he's working on 😅
i feel sorry for u if u never played a dreamcast
hold the power button to discharge the power supply while the console is unpluged and you will be safe.
9:15 You still got cancer after alll. Im just kidding, good job !
region free xbox360😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
you didn't even bother launching the game disc by selecting the the controller icon and press "A"
A 23 minute "long"? Mildly disappointed
