I may be blind, but i didn't notice that much difference graphically. Now, Shogun 2 on the other hand, was an incredible step ahead, I consider it the first modern total war. PS: and empire was a lot more colorful, and had 3d flags on top of units, while Napoleon was very desaturated and the flags were only images.
@@nathantorresstanevil6958 Napoleon and empire battles have aged ok, but the campaign has aged the most, like not being able to see every building in the region selecting only the capital (like the letter games). And you can't change the position of troops cards in battles.
The true strength of Russian infantry is the bayonet. Russian units in ETW/NTW tend to suffer in shootouts, this unit being the exception, however they excel at using Swedish tactics from the Northern War; Close with the enemy to short range, fire one or two volleys, then charge with the bayonet. You'll smash enemy formations quickly and with limited casualties.
I heard this before, but looking at unit stats you can see that Russian infantry just have a higher charge bonus. How significant is that? From what I understand, charge bonus is a one time thing that applies when you initially charge enemy units. Its more useful for cavalry because you can charge, pull back and then repeat the charge several times. What other advantages do Russian infantry have when it comes to melee?
@@andreyz2436 Their melee attack is higher as well, I did a test against British line infantry using fire by rank, getting off a full volley before charging. My Russian line lost around 30 men, the British were near completely destroyed in less than a minute. I don't know if the charge bonus works like in other TW games, where there is initial damage and then a increase in melee stats for a short time after, it's probably safe to assume that the charge works as you described. You don't want to play defensive, as their stats aren't good for that, having lower accuracy, slower reload etc. Stay on the attack whenever possible, and you'll have better results.
@@NiceGuy-Nationalist I was comparing regular Russian line infantry with say British and French. I will check stats again, maybe they have defence in melee stat higher which makes them more likely to survive in melee. But I think the melee attack stat is same. I of course use bayonet charging, as the Russian units tend to be worst in accuracy and reload. Basically it seems that for regular infantry units the British are the best. The French have the best elite units.
@@usertankist45 in Empire Russian melee defense is a little lower at 11, while melee attack is 8 (the average for line infantry is 13 and 6 respectively). Standard British line has average attack, but defense is 15 so they're able to play the shooting game and also hold the line better against attack. France tends to have the best infantry in the game, benefiting from higher attack (like the Russians) without the drawbacks (lower defense, accuracy, reload), their Swiss Guard can also beat Siemenovski Foot Guards both shooting and in melee, though it's a close fight.

I'm currently doing an HRE campaign, wanted to know whether Zweihanders are even worth getting, considering they need a max level Castle barracks, and there might be the infamous 2-handed glitch
They don't suffer from this bug, but rather poor stats - double handed axe is just superior to two handed sword in every way in my opinion. I think you should recruit them, mostly because they are pretty cool, but except them to be shit.

I'll make some melee tests for Russian infantry soon.
В NTW русская линейная пехота незаслуженно очень слабая.
