So nostalgic! This dvd came with my first drum kit ever back in 2005. Almost fainted when I got home from school one day and my parents surprised me with a blue Pearl Export
I just recently bought a reference set and they ain't kiddin. This really is the greaetest quality drummset in the world. listen to how much pop is in that snare!!!! It's soooo amazing!!!!
Proud to say I have the exact setup rack n all on the granite sparkle kit. Is my dream kit and sounds so good. Best of the best!!! Pearl knocked it outside the park. Yes they are heavy. But the quality of the hardware and woods. Nothing comes close that I’ve played. Big investment for sure. Do it
I have a reference kit 22x20 ,20x16 ,8x7 ,10x8 ,12x9 ,14x12 ,16x14 and snare 14x6/5 but! change the hoop by fat tone hoops.. is really amazing this kit!! i love you!!!! thank you pearl.. the best reason to play drums!!
Just ordered a kit in "Shimmer Of Oz" in the shell sizes: 22"x18", 12"x9", 13"x10", 16"x16" - My snare is a Pearl Masters Custom in "Lime Sparkle Fade" - I am really excited about receiving the drums, soon - my Christmas present this year. :)
@TheDudeWithTheDrums The Reference Series toms include OptiMounts, MasterCast Die-Cast Hoops, & Clear Remo Emperor Heads on the toms, Clear Powerstroke 3 on the BD, and a coated "window" head on the snare.
All of the main drum companies produce fantastic drums. Whether it be Gretsch, Pearl, DW, Tama etc. It's the drummer that makes the drums sound good. What really seperates drums is the flexability of the hardware that comes with the drums. The most flexable hardware tends to be Gibraltar, Tama, Pearl, Yamaha and DW. But the rest are good as well. Personally I like Gretsch as they sound incredible, hold their value and come with Gibraltar hardware. But you may think othwerwise, Good luck !
@drummerboy2595 The VBX Vision Series is a 100% birch shell and the VSX and VX are a combination shell. As the VBX are 6-ply 7.5mm on the toms & 14x14 floor toms and 8-ply 10mm on the 16x16, 18x16, & bass drums... you'll have no problem with tone, projection, and look of the lacquer finish.
Pearl the best reason to play Drums I have a Pearl Session kit since 1994 still sounds year after year like a good old wine. :) K custom Cymblas , i like the dark .. classic steve gadd's type.
Nice science. I believe the science - you only have to have roto-toms to know that every skins behaves differently, so each shell will too. However, drum science won't stop here. Pearl need to include the SLEISHMAN technology to take drums even further. The classical guitar sort of stagnated in its construction for decade but has recently been transformed by thinkers. Nice job Pearl!
@Brucifer6sixsicks Sounds like you're looking for a Reference Series kit in #103 Piano Black or #122 Black Mist with black hardware. You can special order the kit from any Authorized Pearl Dealer... look in the Dealer section of our main website pearldrum (dot)com
You have to play what you like and make sure the size of the drums are best for your playing style. Usually speaking for Jazz, keep it to the standard shell sizes. 8x12, 9x13, 14x14, 16x16, 14x18 kick drums are great for some situations. Gretsch top end kits are great for that purest jazz sound. Most of the jazz greats used Gretsch in the 60's and 70's. Tony Williams, Cobham, Lenny White, Elvin Jones, etc. It depends on what sound you like. But check out lots of kits first.
its all in your ear. i personally like a clear pinstripe on my kick because i am old school and like more midrange and attack vs. punch and depth. However, I recommend the P3 because so many drummer swear by it. I personally think the Force I is Aquarian's best kick head.
If you are a decent player.. you can play any kit ...but ....a great skinned and sounding kit bring the player out in you ..for sure! I am giving Pearl their new Catchphrase - " Pearl Drum s - Brings the player out!" "Pearl Drums - Just add PLayer " , "Pearl Drums - Find the Player within !" , Pearl Drums - Release the inner drummer" , Pearl Drums - WE made the KIT ..You bring the HIT!"
Cheers.I take your point about the ring on Dennis's snare but from a funk soul perspective I think it sounds sweet. The impression I get with this kit is that whilst the Masterworks appears truly bespoke, with the Reference series Pearl are making the choice of wood combinations/plys for you.I suppose you pays your money, you makes your choice. They do sound nice here but I would very much like to compare the live sound with a high-end maple with same skins/tuning to see if they're worth the extra!
nothings better than the references. i'm getting some in twilight fade with black hardware. i'm going to chuck levins tomorrow to find out the price =D they sound AMAZING
no, eq tweaking can take away some of the high end and overtone but the fundamental tone of the drum is there. Go to your nearest drumshop and try the reference, the drums will absolutely hug you. It is as good or better than DW.
I'll have either the Silver finish that Chambers had, The Purple Craze or The Red. This summer. I've got half of the money I need. I was told it would cost $4200. But I'm pursuing a career in music so I figured I would go all out and have the best.
I've always liked maple and oak customs. However,I saw Manu Katche recently. He normally uses an Oak Custom but this time he was on a rented Recording Custom. It sounded great.Afterwards I got speaking to his tech and Manu had stipulated only coated ambassadors on top and clear underneath. He'd only brought his own cymbals and pedal and snare. The week before I was lucky enough to see Billy Cobham in the same venue, with his big Maple set and although Billy was great I much preferred Manu's sound.
DW and pearl are both great companies. However, the Reference kit is amazing because it combines different woods to create a unqiue and superior tone. DW just has maple or birch shells.
Just ordered a Reference snare,14x6.5. I'm so excited! The Pearl Reference snare is the most beautiful, well-rounded, full-sounding snare I've ever heard, and after more than a decade of playing drums, I'm thrilled to be receiving such a true piece of perfection! Does anyone have any tips on tuning the snare for a rock sound with a nice, loud crack for rimshots? I'm thinking about getting an Aquarian triple threat head. Any help would be *much* appreciated. Purple craze! Ah! So excited! :D
oh very true very true....ya i love tama and gretsch...gretsch has the beast look ever very classic..not for hard hitters though but it has a good sound if you like classical..or jazz music..my cousin has the gretsch maple catalina or something like that it looks gnarly and sounds pretty good with sabian cymbals..what kind of cymbals do you have with your yamaha?
@PearlDrumCorp Why did you compress the snare? You didn't need to these drums sound amazing just through a clean mike! I wish I could afford one of these kits... OR a masterworks those too are incredible. Keep it up! I love my Pearl Kit!
Yes...interesting point about reaction to climate. How do think this kit compares with the other "hybrid" kits out there - particularly Yamaha's Phoenix, which I've seen up close but not heard. It has a very exotic Jatoba, Kapur(?) and maple mix! This along with Tama's Birch/Bubinga and others seems to be growing trend for the high end stuff and they're definitely not cheap.
depends what price range but for an excellent drum kit at a very good price i would go for a pearl vision series drum kit. but if you want to go higher it is either reference or masters. i would only every buy pearl or DW kits but the DW kits are very expensive. ive found pearl the best
columbine 1818. you make a good point, a very good one about the right drum heads and proper tuning. once those elememts are settled, you can tune a freggin garbage can. although this reference series kit sounds amazing. the fact is any kit as cheap as $400.00 could sound like a $ 4000.00 kit. all this to say i agree with what you say.
omercymercyme, I am wondering what will happen to the sound with different climates, hot/cold/dry/humid. I am just not convinced of blending different woods in the manner in which they are doing it is the best approach. Maybe blending woods, but using different wood combinations depending on the the drum? I don't know. Using a consistent shell/edge throughout the set I can see. I would rather they finish the insides of the shell with a high gloss finish as the outside.
does anybody know the sticking Dennis Chambers uses when hes doin that crazy thing between the snare-toms-cymbals? is it just singles real fast or some other rudiment combo?????????
how much would it cost to get 20x18 bass drum,10x7 rack tom.12x7 rack tom,14x12 floor tom,16x12 floor tom, and a 13x6 snare,in all black but vision series all maple shells.
damn that will sound good, the ec2's are the best tom heads ive used, i used the emad for a long time and loved it until i got the superkick II, but damn ur gonna have a badass kit. earsex
Does all the accesories and skinns mentioned on your official Pearl site include in all reference kits you buy from any of your authorised dealers? Seems like a really awsome kit! I'm gonna buy one as soon as I get the money.
I've own a Yamaha Maple Custom kit going on 18 years. it is the pre-Yess kit. I think they started to make the shells slightly thinner since I purchased the kit, so I am not familiar with how they have changed. I can say that the hoops need to be replaced with something other than aluminum. The lugs, IMO, aren't that good. If I had to do it over, I wouldn't get a Maple Custom. Maybe a Recording Custom, but they don't offer decent colors or the right sizes. The new kits? I have no idea.
does this mean that dennis chambers is no longer playing masters premium legend? i really love the sound ian paice has on his mpl, but im wondering which of the 2 series is considered the better by pearl?
@SomeoneWitSkill for tom and kick sound, pearl reference all the way, but personally i cant stand the snare, its hard to get rid of the ring of the snare by muffling it, without losing the "character" of the drum, personally i eould buy the reference kit, and get a new snare like a metal snare, specifically carbon.
I don't know. How the hybrids are going to change sonically. I don't know how much truth there is, but I think the early Gretsch shells that were made by Jasper had gum wood and maple. Which had a cool sound, but Jasper had out of roundness problems. Maybe someone knows more than I. I love the old Gretsch sets, they had a cool sound, but out of roundness was not cool. Pearl talks about the 12 inch tom has maple and that is their "Reference", but why do they change on the rest of the kit?
Morgan Rose is sitting here talking about how amazing these drums are, and he don't even use the reference series. Must not be that big of a compromise after all.
i got a question, im debating in getting either this set, or the tama GranStar II with all birch shells. dont say tama because of the name tama, and dont say pearl because the name pearl, go by sound plz
Chambers will sound good enough even on plastic boxes... The man...
Do it
dammm that was crazy !!!! Denis is beating that floortom and china like it stole something lol
lol
I have a reference kit 22x20 ,20x16 ,8x7 ,10x8 ,12x9 ,14x12 ,16x14 and snare 14x6/5 but! change the hoop by fat tone hoops.. is really amazing this kit!! i love you!!!! thank you pearl.. the best reason to play drums!!

im speechless. those drums sound absolutely amazing!
i love when Omar plays and then at the end the beast is unleashed(Dennis Chambers)!!
lol Chambers is a BEAST!!!! damn amazing creative artists......
those are the best sounding drums i've ever heard. no joke
Black hardware is available on Reference as a special order with any Authorized Pearl Dealer.
@Brucifer6sixsicks Since the 14x14, 16x16, and 18x16 floor toms are supported by leg brackets and legs, no mounting system is included.
@Brucifer6sixsicks Yes, the OptiMounts are included with each tom.
My POWER TOM Reference kit arrives in 2 weeks!
All of the main drum companies produce fantastic drums. Whether it be Gretsch, Pearl, DW, Tama etc. It's the drummer that makes the drums sound good.

:D
@Brucifer6sixsicks Sounds like you're looking for a Reference Series kit in #103 Piano Black or #122 Black Mist with black hardware. You can special order the kit from any Authorized Pearl Dealer... look in the Dealer section of our main website pearldrum (dot)com
just bought one ahh!!!!....cant wait till it gets here
@Ramen1020 Its the new ec2 sst. The heads are the same thickness, its actually the dampening ring that changes for each head size.
You have to play what you like and make sure the size of the drums are best for your playing style. I nearly said i'd give my arms and legs for one of these kits... but then i'd be fucked, and unable to play it =P
Gorgeous kits.
Not a big pearl fan, although, the concept of the reference series kit is one of the best that i have heard in a long time.
I love the Omar man!!
The original Pearl Reference series is the best . i hate they discontinued them
I just got myself a Reference snare in twilight fade. It's awesome :D

you wonder how much these guys practice to get that good.

@Mrdrummy94 pearls website has a pricelist on it but i think a standard reference kit runs around 6000
WOW!
How much is it going for?
And have fun with your set!
still would sound amazing

reference. totally
Does all the accesories and skinns mentioned on your official Pearl site include in all reference kits you buy from any of your authorised dealers?
Seems like a really awsome kit! I'm gonna buy one as soon as I get the money.
@PearlDrumCorp If one orders black hardware, will the optimounts match? Will the tom arms also match?
lol yeah they got morgan to play for the vision series though
Check out the Sonor Lite and SQ2 kits, and the Yamaha PHX. Those are the only three kits I like better than the Pearl Reference and Masterworks kits.
thats why he's doing doubles

Does the price of the drum go down respectively when they start blending cheaper woods? Birch and Mahogany are generally cheaper than Maple.
what's with dennis and 3 floor toms? it's tight, but weird.
dennis floortoms sound fuckin' awesome!
God that snare sounds amazing :|
coudlnt agree more
yeah
i have rotbeer too!
How would these compare to the Pearl Masters Custom?

i want a pearl reference kit
Reference or Masters Premium?
Anyone know what heads Dennis is using here? Especially on the snare!
sick..
mahogany is generally the most exspensive...well it actually depnds on plys and shit
Try powerstroke 3 coateds bro, or if you want even more focus, PS4 coateds. I swear by either for my reference.
lol... dennis starts playin a beat, then just goes fuckin nuts
how do i get my toms to sound like Omar Hakim's??
does anyone know how he tunes or his heads??
i got a question, im debating in getting either this set, or the tama GranStar II with all birch shells.
dont say tama because of the name tama, and dont say pearl because the name pearl, go by sound plz
