No no, he did not say you can show off if you have wealth! He said you can get luxury items etc if you have wealth. So the Niyyah should be to enjoy the blessings of Allah SWT and always be grateful to Him for them but never to show them off as that is haram and/or can lead to haram like what you mentioned. So it's the intention that counts, please bear that in mind and I hope this helps.
