Again, a great and fair treatment of Luther. He actually called Zwingli "of a different spirit". There is some merit I think in Calvin's union with Christ, but that trajectory can get you out of orbit, so I think so long as justification is always your ground then you are safe and so I still think Luther's position is the safe theological method - justification. It is actually not boring for us Lutherans in fact all flows from this in practical terms the outworking of the Christian life.

Phd. student Richard Allinger reinforces the need for the continuation of the Reformation which started five centuries ago for the following six reasons cited in his book "The Reformation Cannot Be Over !":
    i. God speaks today.
    ii. Theologians make mistakes.
iii. New issues require new thinking.
iv. Scriptures must have priority over confessions.
    v. The right of private judgment.
vi. Above all, it is important that we engage in the process of (semper reformanda) "always reforming" in the proper spirit and manner.

So, if I understand correctly, Luther's take on Law, Justification, and Sanctification could be compared to exercise, rest, and muscle growth: That is, after a really hard work out, your muscles break down, but if you get good nutrition and rest, you recover and grow bigger, stronger muscles. In practice, you hear a hard sermon, and it sears your conscious. But then, you're reminded of God's grace and mercy, and it rebuilds you, making you more holy & sanctified. On the other hand, in Calvin's system, the Holy Spirit brings you to a union with Christ, and faith and repentance are more of the "first fruits" of this union, rather than being the instrumental causes of salvation, per se.
