    This video is a treasure, captures the background development of these legendary WSC monsters beautifully. I saw Derek Bell in the passport queue at Gatwick in Nov 2017, the master shuffled along quietly, unknown to the rabble. Gave me a weird pleasure to see one of the greatest Sportscar racing drivers of all time enjoying his anonymity.

      Yes it's true : The 917 n°21 was clocked at 396 Km/h ( 246 mph ) , this speed record was only beaten in 1988 by the WM-P88 , Roger Dorchy at the wheel , with a speed of 407 Km/h ( 253 mph ) , the car had been prepared specialy for that & didn't finish the race . The same race in 1971 , Jackie Oliver set the fastest lap ever ( for decades ) on the Porsche 917 n°18 : 3 ' 13 '' 6 , average speed of 250 Km/h ( 155 mph ) , only beaten recently by a Toyota at 251 Km/h ...

    I wonder how Porsche came up with the design for the 917 they did not have a wind tunnel to use yet in 1970 did they the car just looks really good for the time,and did u see how quick it got into the entrance of a corner....I saw some in car camera footage from a 75 to 80s 962 with a test driver at may Hockenhiem he was going around corners faster then ur mind could imagine today and that was then...

    The 917/30 had an engine that could reach about 1500 hp, got something like 2 mpg, and had a 100-liter gas tank. And brought down the Can-Am racing series almost entirely by itself.

    • @thethirdman225

    • @philipclayberg4928
      @philipclayberg4928 4 роки тому

      True, it didn't. Maybe that's a good thing. Because I wouldn't want Le Mans shut down like Can-Am was.

    • @thethirdman225
      @thethirdman225 4 роки тому

      Philip Clayberg The 917/30 didn’t meet the Group 5 regulations anyway. But everyone who says it was responsible for the end of Can-Am forgets two things. First of all, there was a Can-Am series the following year, using big American V8 engines. The second point is that, for all the races it won, Porsche (in reality Penske Porsche) were no more dominant than McLaren had been. The fact is that money is always going to be a problem in an unlimited type of series. You could also make an argument, on the same basis, that the 917 _did_ kill off Group 5, if you subscribe to that line of thinking. But Le Mans survived and went on to survive Group C.

    • @philipclayberg4928
      @philipclayberg4928 4 роки тому

      I have a book about the 917. The book was published in 1998. Apparently McLaren complained about Porsche's "unfair" advantage (and this was after McLaren dominated Can-Am from 1969-1972). Porsche said they offered to share engine/turbocharging technology with the other teams. This offer was turned down. The 917/30 was driven one last time in the 1970s in 1975 by Brian Redman (he drove it for Penske).
      I think as soon as Porsche designs and races something dominant, the other teams complain bitterly. Whether the complaints come from McLaren, or Ferrari, or whoever. Am I pro-Porsche? No. (I like Porsche, but I also like other car companies. Including McLaren and Ferrari.) Am I for making technology available to all teams so that they can all make use of it? Yes. But deliberately blunting one company (whether it's Porsche or Mazda or whoever) to make other companies more competitive in racing doesn't make sense to me. After all, no one punished McLaren after the McLaren F1 won at Le Mans. Or Audi after winning for about ten years straight. Why does Porsche get picked on? I wish I knew.

    • @thethirdman225
      @thethirdman225 4 роки тому

      Philip Clayberg Well, exactly. This kind of flies in the face of the claim that Porsche killed Can-Am or Group 5 (this is supposed to be about Le Mans). But nobody stopped them from steamrollering the 24 hour event from 1982-87. I’m sure teams complained but if you look at the way Group C eventually fell by the wayside, it didn’t really have much to do with Porsche. Yet they had a mortgage on WSC racing for six years with the 956 and 962.

    There was little or no commonality between the 917 of Le Mans and the 917/30 of Can Am. That means that, given there were so many types, it is impossible to give absolute performance figures.

    • @thethirdman225
      @thethirdman225 11 років тому +1

      ***** That record is not disputed. What is disputed is the info from the Wiki article - which needs to be re-written - which implies that the performance of the Can Am variant was typical of the car. Given that Porsche had to build 25 917s to gain homologation, given that all were naturally aspirated, the figures are not representative of the 917 but of a couple of bespoke examples. That makes it a distortion and a misrepresentation and it should be changed.
      And that record stood for only 5 years.

      @@o.a.m9515 Don't lecture me. The 917/20 in this video - known as "the Pink Pig" - was, in all respects other than bodywork, a basic 917. It bore no relationship to the 917/30 and was not itself a CanAm car but a Group 4 homologated car for Le Mans and other endurance racing. It was a 4.9 litre, naturally-aspirated flat 12. It was not turbocharged or supercharged or anything else. The aerodynamic layout was derived from the research done for the 1971 version of the 917LH.

  • @thethirdman225
    @thethirdman225 10 років тому +1

    King Rose Archives Please stop quoting 917/30 performance figures as representative of the 917 fleet! They are not the same.
    Recent research also reveals that the claim of 240 mph for the Langheck is not accurate. It's certainly not reliable. The highest speed ever recorded for a 917 at Le Mans is 362 km/h or 224.4 mph, verified by the ACO speedtrap in 1971.
