Week 1: I was the only one in my circle of friends, family and coworkers watching the premier. Week 8: 75% of my office and my entire immediate family are talking about the finale during lunch and dinner.
The penguin had more balls than any marvel movie post end game. They really didn't pull their punches with this show. It was dark, violent and it didn't let go. Marvel would make you empathize with the villain and make the villain some sort of anti hero. Here, penguin is unapologetically the devil in this show, like he should be. I dont want to make the villains anti-heros, like venom or suicide squad.
this performance makes me think Collin Farrell could play Penguin , Joker, Bane , Ras Al Gul and prolly even poison Evy all in the same movie and somehow make it work... his face change in killing Vic was insane...
I truly think this is where most villain shows/movies have messed up. This show had you empathizing with the villain but reminded you that this is indeed a VILLAIN which in turn made those moments far more compelling and impactful. Truly one of the best world building shows I’ve ever watched.

I FORGOT ALL ABOUT BATMAN watching the Penguin. I haven't been this invested in a show since "Snowfall". The season finale ruined my night and the writers wanted us to remember, Penguin is a bad guy. The writing team and director on this series definitely deserve more work.
It did so well because the writing was perfect. It's NOT a comic book show. Anybody could watch this and really enjoy it. It crossed genres and entertained all kinds of viewers yet happened to be set in the comic world of Gotham city
Exactly. It's a dark, gritty family business/mafioso series. And it is vintage Matt Reeves. It's gorgeous, complex, & pretty realistic. The acting is just insanely good. This should make a star out of the lead actress...
I just love that The Penguin takes itself and the character seriously, and the overall tone of the show. I was a huge fan of Netflix Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Punisher and to a lesser degree Luke Cage and Iron Fist. In general though those Netflix shows in my opinion are some of the very best Marvel media released since they began their upward trajectory in the late 2000s and I was sad to see them come to an end.
I usually hate weekly episodes but this built anticipation. But after episode 2, I waited till there were at least two episodes I could watch back to back. So basically, I tuned in every other week.
IGN tried... but xey were quickly forgotten. i was intrigued to see if the worst was true but after a few eps i didnt even remember till someone brought it up
I just don't know yet if its needed. I think they should keep this franchise clean and concise. Only doing stories that are absolutely necessary, and I wouldn't mind seeing another character get a show tbh. Idk. Maybe the next season could be about him becoming the mayor or something.

Not every show has a strong start and not every show is consistent. Dropping all episodes at once works well for shows that are inconsistent or have a weak first episode. Plus many 'casual' viewers forget to watch shows after having watched the pilot.
Any show that can make the viewers conflicted on who to root for is pretty good in my book. We were rooting for Oz and then at the end, we were all reminded that he was the real villain all along.

I think people need to learn to be satisfied…… when something is this great , just cherish it. I don’t want them trying too hard to live up to the hype with a season 2 , to the point it gets ruined 😰
Sopranos is my favourite show and Penguin is probably in my top 5/10 but I really don’t get the comparisons, the mother/son relationship is kinda similar I guess and it’s a Mafioso/Gangster show but they really are nothing alike. Anyway RIP Salvatore Maroni, 57, he was a fucking kid.
He's already said he'd love to do a second season of Penguin, it was just at the time, he was absolutely fed up and done with the prosthetics/makeup. He's returning in the second film too.
In what way is Bale the better Batman. I don’t mean to hate but he is the weakest part of those movies. Bale did great, but there’s nothing interesting about the character. Pattinson’s performance gets flak from some people but it’s such an underrated performance. The story he is able to tell with his eyes alone is incredible. Not to mention the incredible character writing. His Bruce actually develops. His worldview is completely turned upside down. He’s forced to confront his mistakes. He isn’t a passive protagonist strung along in his own film. He’s the emotional core of the movie and the most interesting part of it. And this is all one film compared to Bale’s 3.

Iconic crime shows that Penguin gets compared to like Sopranos or Breaking bad also have several+ seasons to build the story and characters and become the true greats that we know them as today, where as this is just the one season. Sure It being related to Batman does elevate it because its adapting something with a large built in fanbase already though, and also because it functions as a part of a larger whole that is The Batman crime saga. And those ARE also parts of what makes it good though. How it adapts the source material as well as how it builds on the previous project(The Batman). It would be more appropriate to compare the entire Batman saga Matt Reeves is doing when its all said and done to other crime epics that have had their full story told.
Penguin: Woman showrunner, strong female characters, well written and acted, compelling story. Reasonable Budget. Audience: Well received, grows and praises the show. Acolyte: Woman showrunner, weak characters all-around, poorly written & acted, incoherent and boring story. Outrageous Budget. Audience: This sucks, viewership drops. If you make a great show with talented people and have responsible budget management, you can come away a winner.
The problem is that there are many shows/movies that do not work and when the show/movie happens to have a female showrunner/female director and a female lead, some people tend to be far more vocal about their criticism, and the criticism tends to be more personal.

Why no one is mentioning the fact that it had significantly less viewers than most recent HBO shows, like House of the Dragon (9 million) and The Last of Us (8 million), and even less than niche, cheaper shows like The White Lotus (4 million) and True Detective: Night Country (3 million)? I hate how no one does the research, and only repeat what the company’s PR reports. The Penguin isn’t the hit everyone is pretending.

MCU movies never really had balls. With the exception of the 1st Avengers & Guardians Of The Galaxy. Been pretty formulaic for the most part.
