I lived there fours years and went to St Stephens school in the 50’s. My best friend was a villager and I was an an Air Force brat. Her name was Mary Fleming and the best friend I ever had. If you know her, she’d be about 73 now, ask her to comment me!! I loved Newfoundland and when we went back stateside I dreamed of Stephenville nightly. I was devastated. What a beautiful place with beautiful people. My name is Donna and Mary and I were together 1st & 2nd grade. I still have the going away gift she gave me. It all speaks volumes about that small town. God bless Canada.
Thanks for this posting and detail. I know a guy from Stephenville and speaks of it and Stephenville crossing with references to St George. These pictures help us as Canadians appreciate our country so much more and respect the diversity and struggles that people have had to survive and still thrive .
I was stationed there from June 1962 till Jan 1964 I loved a girl named Katie o'quinn, some buddies of mine from the base had a band called dynatones and they played at the clover club,Stephenville has some bad assed to the bone winters you can't tell anyone about the snow storms there because no one will believe you ,on new years eve in 1962 it snowed 81 inches in 3 days winds of 85 mph. I still eat hamburgers and fries with white vinegar on them, well holler at me--JD
holy moly!! - my dad was stationed those years.. my brother was born Jan 64. we called it The Rock..I was 10 in '64- yes the most unbelievable winters.. snowdrifts to the roof line!! we lived on the base...movies and popcorn .25c! Remember beach parties with other families on the rugged coastline. Corner Brook was 40 mi away and took us 1/2 a day to get there. :)
Stoped there once driving from Florida to Newfoundland. While getting my Corvette worked on I asked the mechanic why is there such a big airport in a little town? You built it he answered along with that hospital and that school. It’s from WW2 he said. Knowing that on 9/11 so many planes had been forced landed in Canada I asked if a lot of them where diverted to that airport and he answered yes and proceeded to tell me about the local people taking people in there homes while they where forced to stay on the ground before proceeding on flights again. I went and bought two cases of beer and returned to the repair shop to thank them all for there hospitality and caring.
I was born in Stephenville crossing in 1964..I was put up for adoption..I have an older sister who was born in 1969.. I have never been back but it looks like a beautiful place to live
I've lived there since April 1994...now it will become a boomtown with the new ownership of the Stephenville International Airport and its upcoming expansion! BTW, Little Caesars Hot-n-Ready Pizza opened recently...perhaps the fastest-growing pizza chain in North America!
