      I love this about Cambridge Audio gear, I've got an A5 Integrated amplifier circa 2005 and it seems they've been doing this for quite some time now. It's one of those really handy features that you never really think about until you introduce a new piece of kit and don't want to start moving loads of gear just to identify the correct input/output.

    The only way to set a tone arm up is using the vinyl test record HFS75 or similar.
    This allows you to determine the absolute optimum tracking and anti skating forces as well as checking other issues such as phasing (to check speaker wirings are set up identically and not 'out of phase'), channel balance and separation. Copies are still available.

    Dear TM
    I must say that I really enjoyed this video and especially because you took a common sense approach to dealing with the upgrade of your hi-fi system. You see, there are other UA-camrs that are convinced that you have to spend thousands of GB Pounds or US Dollars to get an acceptable sound or achieve the status of audiophile.
    However, you have shown that you do not have to mortgage your house or raid your life savings to get a satisfactory/good and enjoyable sound from your system and, when all is said and done, that's all that really matters.
    Until your next video
    Bob

    I recently got a Denon dp-47f like yours, in part because of your review video, and I'm soon going to be making a video on it, too. I too upgraded the DL-80 cartridge on mine--in my case, I went with the Audio-Technica AT-440mlb, with a Micro-Line stylus, because I wanted to eliminate inner groove distortion and sibilance, which is my biggest pet peeves on records. I HIGHLY recommend trying the AT-440 if you haven't tried it already!

    I've got the Cambridge Solo and it is a great little preamp. The MM stage is the exact same as in the duo it just lacks a MC stage and headphone amp and I don't need either of those. I use it it with a Technics SL-5100 with Nagaoka MP-150 cartridge and it has been great. The internal power supply is very well isolated and separated from the audio circuitry so there isn't any unwanted noise from electrical interference.
    Edit: Just a side note about alignment. It works when you align from the top but the best results come from aligning based on the position of the cantilever as it isn't always perfectly aligned with the body of the cartridge.

    Denon made some great direct drive turntables. Before setting tracking force, you would normally set the vertical tracking angle ( VTA ). There isn't any easy adjustment for tonearm height on this turntable, but the lift can be adjusted by turning VR3 ( one of the screws on the right side of the turntable base with platter removed )

    This is actually the reason most high end MC turntables are belt driven. The amount of gain thats applied to their signal means that you will almost always hear motor noise with a direct drive setup. You simply cannot insulate the platter from the motor enough. My own personal preference is belt drive, MM cartrage, best quality stylus i can afford (currently using an at95e cart with an LPGear at95MR micro-ridge stylus now, and personally im absolutely blown away)

    I have been in the audio industry for 35 years and I think you were very wise changing to a MM cartridge. This video is quite old but I would like to mention that the denon dp-47f is actually quite a high end turntable and a fantastic performer. It has some electronic dampening features which tend to be pretty hit or miss with audiophiles but the turntable will sound good with basically any cartridge, low, medium or high compliance as a result. So I sincerely doubt that you'd need to worry about it in terms of sound quality.

    • @medes5597
      @medes5597 7 місяців тому

      In case you haven't seen, he has a whole video about it where he specifically buys that model, partly for the reasons you give here. Basically saying its a high end turntable but because there's a lot of them made, it shouldn't be too expensive e
      It's gone up a lot in price since he made that though.

    • @trevor245
      @trevor245 7 місяців тому

      @@medes5597 I have seen that video a few years ago iirc but I don't dinstinctly remember what is said in it. Turntables in general have gotten quite a bit more expensive in the last few years but relatively speaking I don't think the dp-47f is a bad deal even at the current prices. The late 70s tonearm technology is not something that's currently recreated. As mentioned in my initial comment some people may not like it as much due to them being purists, but I believe it is a super fascinating piece of technology. I have a ps-x75 by sony which has a pretty similar tonearm technology except it is done automatically when the tracking force is set. Not entirely sure if there are other differences I am not super familiar with the dp-47f specifically, I have worked on a few before. Besides, getting a good direct drive turntable new would probably start you at around the used price for a dp-47f in the budget options.
      Sorry for the rambling, just something I am interested in. But yeah lovely turntables.

    I don't understand why the MC sounds lower in volume than the MM if you had set your preamp to the correct input level. It seems that your preamp just might not be handling the MC cartridge correctly, or doesn't have enough gain. If the input compensation on the preamp is correct, I'd think that its output to the amplifier should be the same for either a MM or MC type. Or is the problem that the MC has less dynamic range than the MM?
    BTW, from what I understand the MM type cartridges have more mass attached to the stylus than the MC types, which in theory gives the MC better high frequency response. I've always liked the ADC cartridges with their "induced magnet" system. They were technically a MM type, but used a PM to "induce" a magnetic field into a light weight bit of iron that moved between the fixed pickup coils. This gave them a moving mass closer to the MC type, but with an output close to a true MM type.

      Moving coil has a lower output, simple as that. The price of being more resolving and why you need a preamp with coil capability. Moving coil is seen as having better sound and being more upscale.

    I'm slowly building up a halfway decent setup, but with the exception of the 2 turntables (a full-auto multi disk unit that is cheap and runs a bit fast, and a manual one that is good) everything is is just my father's old stuff lol. But all the components I'm most jealous of (visual equalizers, tube pre-amp, and reel to reel player) are things he never owned, and are out of my price range. Though I do have a legit tube powered oscilloscope hooked up to one of the unused tape monitor outputs for a nice effect, but it's still not quite the same.

Interestingly, just a few days ago I had selected and bought just the same cartridge to replace the original Glanz GMC-10EH high output MC cartridge on a particularly good vintage turntable, a Gradiente (Garrard) RP-2 (bought new in 1990), with good results as well. With a little help of your video, too (thanks). Main system turntable is a very good Pioneer PL-L1000A linear tracking with JVC MC-1 and Audio Technica AT-F7 low output MC cartridges and a Roksan Corus Black MM cartridge, all of them VERY good phono cartridges. Looking forward for your next videos. Greetings from Brazil.

    Hi pmailkeey. Thanks for your response. Certainly an interesting debate and there's plenty of food for thought in your arguments. Our comments are out there in the public domain for anyone that's interested to judge and make their own minds up.
    Just one point I would like to clarify if I may, please; stylus armatures are almost without exception mounted to the body on a compliant flexible bung (usually a polymer) which makes the flexible coupling the armature moves on. As an engineer you will be very aware that the flexibility of materials varies with their temperature (heat steel to red hot, for instance, and it's very malleable or even plastics in hot water!) and this is where the relationship between ambient temperature and a pick-up cartridges compliance becomes important. Your comment about "colder temps would make (the) record harder/more durable" actually confirms the above scenario.
    Also as we both now agree and accept this as basic physics wouldn't you expect a "harder" (low temperature) record to wear faster than a "softer" (room temp) record as it would be more "brittle" and less able to flex against unwanted stylus torsion; i.e. fold a flexible vinyl L.P. against your knee and it'll flex by a considerable amount then bounce back into shape. In contrast the same exercise with a "harder" and much more rigid shellac 78 R.P.M record will result in a cracked / shattered record. I know this analogy doesn't compare like with like but I think it's a reasonable way to empirically illustrate my premise.
    Finally, and I apologise in advance for my stupidity, but I really don't understand your comment about "non-magnetic" speakers and driving a light bulb with my amplifier. My main concern with this is that driving an a.c. current through the filament of a light bulb would, without a doubt, generate a magnetic field - not much but you can't deny it's presence. I'm not an engineer but, from memory and school physics, I seem to remember that Michael Faraday confirmed that passing an alternating current through a wire (in this case an audio signal and bulb filament) induced an associated magnetic field. So no doubt I'm missing your point here but I can't imagine, under any circumstances, an electrical transducer that does not have an associated magnetic field. I suspect that by a "non-magnetic" speaker you mean a device that doesn't operate mechanically under Flemings Left Hand Rule. The nearest real-world example I can think of a "non-magnetic" speaker would be a plasma gas tweeter which uses ionised ambient air in lieu of a traditional cone but even these rely on electro-mechanical ("magneto-electro") devices to regulate the gas "signal"
    Thank you once again for a stimulating and thoughtful debate; This is what the internet should be all about; healthy intellectual stimulus and discussion; I get thoroughly dismayed at some of the ignorant and basically rude commentary that's so common on UA-cam. For me it isn't even a matter of "who's wrong or who's right"; it's a wise man that accepts there are no definitives in this life and most things boil down to shades of gray. Thanks once again for your very prompt and illuminating response to my earlier post! :0)

    Hello, I've got a suggestion for easily replace the cartridge. You've got the old stylus of the old MC? Reinstall it to the cartridge.
    Then fix the platter with adhesive tape. Place a sheet of aluminium foil as you find it in your kitchen over the platter and fix it with tape, too. Place the tone arm with the worn stylus on the aluminium foil and softly write a curve into it (it's only the old stylus, don't worry). Then remove the cartridge, install a new one or replace the headshell to the one with the new cartridge. Make sure you can move the cartridge by not fixing the screws too hard. Find the written groove on the foil's surface. Place the tip over or in it. Don't move, this is the new thing! Fix the screws. DONE. If your previous mounted cartridge was pefect, the new one is, too.
    I recommend this way if the click fix cartridge of a vintage german DUAL (where is nothing to adjust) is beeing replaced by a half inch cartridge and to adjust it correctly. Should work here, too.

    Unless it was a "for video" thing, I don't think you got the alignment quite right @ 5:22. The stylus cover needs to be removed, and the needle actually aligned to the central hole on the protractor. You can be parallel with both lines, but have the overhang off (which you can't really tell unless looking at the actual needle contact point.) Thanks for the great videos! Love 'em!
