Having watched Platoon many times I came to the conclusion that both Sgt Elias and Sgt Barnes were in their own way excellent warriors and indisposable on the battlefield. Yet..Elias was like an Angel and Barnes a Demon, but both fully understood the concept of war. Both men, wether good or evil were made for that war. Both of them were true survivors. Its in their blood.
If you have no regard for peoples' lives, like Barnes. They will have no regard for yours. Elias suffered the ultimate betrayal twice. He was "fragged" and knowingly left behind. Getting deleted on purpose by your own people or being abandoned during a fight with the enemy are two of the worst things. They were both happening to Elias. The comradery and brotherhood Elias created around his own men, gave them the courage or even love to go in and get their guys out, to defend the rest of their unit because these are the people that matter and that depend on you. Barnes had no such empathy for his men. They were simple tools to worn out doing a job... expendible and to be treated as such.
Don't forget that Elias was wearing a flak jacket that offered partial protection, and where exactly each bullet hit would also have been a factor. Unlike this gel substance, the human body is made up of bones and organs of different shapes and density. Given the flak jacket and bones, the angle at which he was hit would also play a role, since the jacket and bones could actually deflect some bullets if the angle was steep enough.
you don't nedd a to be a superior to be the leader of a soldiers were die every day, barnes was a sadistic and antagonic leader, Elías was disapointed and dident' t believe any more in war, anyway he represents principles, values, and corage
Andres Felipe Crespo Vergara alt Wolfe was inexperienced in the field he was fresh out of command school where Elias and Barnes both have been service for years and did a few tours as both reenlisted.
None of this takes into account the Unbelievable Human Being's ability to transcend the physical when flooded with adrenalin and focussed on one aim. There are many instances of Soldiers overcoming enemy emplacements after being wounded. In the Scottish Regiments the term among the men was "Fighting Mad"
Sgt Juan Angel Elias died in a army hospital from fragment wounds . He was wounded while Setting up booby traps on a well know NVA trail. Died about a week later. He was a true American Hero.
According to the Vietnam vets who I have had the honor of caring for, almost to a man their biggest complaints on the M-16 were jamming and stopping power. They often said the round was a maiming not killing round. Often using personal weapons gotten through other sources. Trading, sent from home, or often opting for an M-4.
You are indeed correct. I made a huge mistake. I omitted a 1. Was supposed to say M-14. I do apologize. I really hate it when I do not check my posts for spelling and errors such as this. Thank you for pointing it out. Shows I should at least proofread what little I do know/ or am told. Mistakes happen but some like in this case make me feel like a complete idiot. Thanks again.
My father was a medic in Vietnam and he's mentioned that more than once he evac'd guys that were hit 10 plus times with 5.56. It's very possible that he could have survived it.
I always thought Stone based Taylor on himself. He should do another Platoon from his exp. I knew a Viet Nam vet who got numerous purple hearts, amongst other ribbons. One from a large caliber (wana say a .60 cal) that took his collar bone apart and they used a rib to repair it.
is this about Platoon, and how characters from the film are based on soldiers that Stone knew when he was in Vietnam, or about ballistics and if someone can survive being shot 3x's? Don't see the connection. I wanted to hear more about the guy who Barnes was based on. Oh well
1. Barnes did not use an M-16 nor was it an XM177 It was a Colt Model 653p. 2. It uses the same mag and fires the same round so it's not like the analysis is wrong.
officially yes, but there were plenty of car 15 around, since commandos, eg the SEALs or Green Berets liked the shorter build. but those rifles were not officially purchased by the us army
Elias had bullet proof vest on and propably ceramic plates for more protection. They don't prevent the bullets from entering but absorb some of the energy carried with them.
To just address a few things here... A) yes he used a colt civilian model as a stand in, it was meant to replicate the xm177e2 (car-15) in limited issue at the time. yes, they started out as special operations guns only (like MACV/SOG but by this late in the war (1969) they had gotten to some others. B) please don't give your second hand accounts of "your friends in Iraq" as ballistic evidence. There is a ton of variation in rifle lengths and bullet speeds and weights as well as engagement distances which can vary results wildly. typically speaking, 5.56 works best at very high speeds. they make the round unstable and dump its energy on entry. if you make the bullet heavier or shorten the barrels, you lose that necessary speed. in Iraq, we were using 14.5 inch barrels to fire a heavier slower 62 grain round (m855). this is less damaging to tissue then the Vietnam 20 inch barrel and faster 55 grain round(m193.) The xm177e2 would likely have a ballistic effect somewhere between those two extremes, it uses the lighter earlier bullet but a shorter barrel. the "ice pick" effect of just going through is caused by too much bullet stability, something you actually get with a slower round not a faster one.
The summarize oliver stone was taylor when he served in the 1st cavalry. So basically the plot of the movie was loosely based on his service in vietnam.
I only saw one of the three shots hit Elias and it hit him in the shoulder. However, the number of 7.62 rounds he takes from the vietcong in his chest is insane.
The rifle Barnes used was a CAR-15 10.5 or 11 inch barrel with 6 inch flash hider shroud. The M16 has a 20inch barrel. 55gr FMJ bullet will give 2700-2750 fps at the muzzle. Out of the CAR 20 in will give 3100-3150 FPS Not a fair comparison.
Sgt. Barnes was wielding a carbine version of the early M-16 known as "Commando" which never saw widespread service throughout the Vietnam War. Anyways, the reduced power of the bullets because of the shorter barrel would have made little or no difference at the range Barnes shot Elias.
yes people have survived multiple wounds from small arms fire. this trauma surgeon is just describing the results of a balistic analysis on a gelatine based block. i've seen soldiers take multiple hits and still get up. ofcourse they needed medical treatment but they survived. i've also seen a few people get hit with a smaller caliber round and drop like sacks of crap. (Royal Australian Army Medical corps 18 years and 7 deployments)
Was Elias wearing a flak jacket? That would have had a chance of stopping some of the bullets' momentum. Many soldiers in Vietnam wore them to protect from shrapnel wounds.
Not saying that this analysis is wrong....but I do find that the gelatin block ratio is wrong and what I mean by that is that Block doesn't fit the profile of the average Physical Soldier at that time.
I think he even took his flak vest off before leaving to cover the flank for the small group he was leading (or something like that), so he could move faster.
It would be possible his heavy jacket would have offered very little protection but It might have made a small difference not to mention one of the rounds hot his shoulder or arm if I can remember also Elias is strong and had his adrenaline pumping it would be possible soldiers have survived getting shot by artillery mortars getting burner stabbed many times also 556 rounds are very powerful but only at close range which in fairness he was close I love platoon one of the best movies ever made
You forgot that he was wearing a flak jacket, no it will not stop a 5.56mm round but it will slow it down and bleed off a lot of energy. So you should have shot the ballistic gel through a Vietnam era flak jacket.
Car-15 (carbine M16), I believe the rifle was...But supposedly, very few were issued in Vietnam and its unlikely an army sgt would be carrying one unless he was on special ops.
you cant just do a 1:1 comparison with ballistics gel..its useful for determining penetration/stopping power but its not supposed to be an analog for the human body..theres bones of various density etc.
The 5.56 round is notoriously underpowered. If you look at the ballistic gel results you can see the round didn't even do what it was designed to do. The 5.56mm is designed to fragment and cause multiple wound tracks but as you can plainly see, it did not. Pistol rounds get better penetration than this example.
This is an ok short, but what people don't realize that different people react differently to different wounds. They also keep on forgetting about adrenaline. You have people like Roy Benavidas and Leonard Platt who was shot 13 times at close range including a bullet that ripped through his lung and survived for a good 6 or 7 minutes. Everyone blames the gun, but you can't quantify the spirit of a human being who wants to stay alive.
I didn't even finish watching this and I had to stop to comment, but I know of two people on opposite sides of the scale. A kid from school was shot with a 22 in the projects and dropped dead instantly. the other guy had 9 out of 15 shots in his body from a dirty cop and he ran several New York blocks and up 5 floors to his aunt's house where he collapsed and then survived. You just never know is my point.
Because the human torso is made completely of flesh. Has no bones or tendons. And is well over 14 inches thick from ribcage to shoulder blades. [/endsarcasm]
He never discusses what type of bullet he uses. 5.56 ball was the ammo of the era. I tried to freeze frame this video, but still couldn't see the actual bullet tips. I suspect he used soft pointed hunting bullets, and not 5.56 ball (fmj to you mivie goers)
Robert Gamache Finally, after all the comment's about technical analysis about M16s , someone realises that the actual question posed by the video went unanswered
I'm no expert, but the human body isn't as thick as that block. So since the bullet is traveling at like 3000fps at a distance of like 15ft those bullets would've went straight through him and granted if they didn't hit anything major he can still be alive for a while. I saw interviews of U.S soldiers in Iraq who will shoot guys center mass across the chest and they will get back up and run behind cover. Not to say they won't die because they will, but what I'm saying is it's not unlikely Elias survived 3 .223 rounds to the chest.
This is stupid. 1) The rank patch is facing the wrong direction 2) At what time did Oliver Stone actually say that Barnes shot Elias, in fact from memory Stone said Barnes wasn't that bad but because it was a movie you take the characters to the extreme for effect. 3) This is just silly, fair enough if you want to myth bust but this is presented in a way to question if this incident did occur or not in real life... which again it did not. And at no point has Stone said otherwise.
They should have used a CAR-15 to be true to the movie. It would give less velocity and therefore less hydrostatic shock, probabky more penetration because of that, and less chance of tumbling. Still almost impossible that anyone would be able to survive 3 torso hits, much less get up and run around. But that's Hollywood
But, its supposed that he could have avoided one of the bullets, also its possible that the other or the others had not impacted directly. Many things could have happened in real life. The scene was not an execution, though it looks so.
yes, it would. It's been around for over 100 years, was used by Law Enforcement for 70-80 years and is still being made and used today, so it must be doing something right.
The original twist of 1 n 14 with the original bullet stoner designed was the real deal for tissue damage n the m 16. Then the army messed with twist powder and etc and ruined it.
This whole 'investigation' was pretty much pointless. You have to know what the 5,56 caliber is designed for. It is made to stop the enemy and immobilize him, not Killing him. A dead soldier is left on the ground, a wounded needs at least 2 Soldiers to take Care of him or get him out of the danger Zone. So you Just Shot one soldier but took 3 Out of the Fight.
Of course he would survive. Barnes fired a version of the M-16, a paper rifle. He should have used an Ak-47 or an FN FAL (not that I was in favor of Elias' death).
An arms expert ? really ? He said "5.56 caliber" which is ridiculous - It's a 5.56 millimeter, making it a 0.223 caliber.. Maybe just a slip, but for an expert, I am not impressed !
Having watched Platoon many times I came to the conclusion that both Sgt Elias and Sgt Barnes were in their own way excellent warriors and indisposable on the battlefield. From now on, when Sgt. Barnes fucks up, I will not punish him. Instead I will punish you because YOU have not helped me.....
@otto Lincoln I doubt that.
Neither Elias or Barnes were platoon leaders. Barnes was the Platoon Sergent and Elias was a squad leader. The only Platoon Leader was LT Wolf.

how is this a true story? they completely changed topics and then didnt even resolve anything.
The full doc is superb. The beehive bomb they used in Vietnam was devastating and its shown in this doc.
Elias have a flack jacket and bones
Tristan flack jackets won't even stop a .22 long rifle, they might stop shrapnel but nothing else.
Flack jackets were only good at stopping shrapnel from mortars and RPGs

True about the flak vest they are mostly meant to slow down shrapnel and the occasional bullet not stop it!

also, Oliver Stone served in the 25th Infantry division.
He served as a crewman in the 25th Infantry artillery not a rifleman grunt.
It's not an M16. It's a chopped down version called a CAR

A dead soldier is left on the ground, a wounded needs at least 2 Soldiers to take Care of him or get him out of the danger Zone. So you Just Shot one soldier but took 3 Out of the Fight.
0:28 why are his sergeant stripes upside down?
Abe Ndiaye Iv seen that before still dont know why
Weapons “expert “ say 5.56 CALIBER? 5.56 mm and .223 caliber...
He was shot by a car15 not an m16a1
Of course he would survive. Barnes fired a version of the M-16, a paper rifle. He should have used an Ak-47 or an FN FAL (not that I was in favor of Elias' death).
Was it William Dafriend or William Dafoe?
Defoe
His name is Willem Dafoe
He really said 'assault rifle'. FS
An arms expert ? really ? He said "5.56 caliber" which is ridiculous - It's a 5.56 millimeter, making it a 0.223 caliber.. Maybe just a slip, but for an expert, I am not impressed !
Elias was probably where ing a flack vest which the did not test
It wasn't and M-16 it was an AR-15!
