51st fact: VIETNAMESE DONT FIGHT FOR COMMUNISM, CAPITALISM OR ANY POLITICAL IDEOLOGY BUT WE FIGHT FOR OUR PEOPLE, OUR COUNTRY. OUR TRUE IDEOLOGIES ARE PATRIOTISM, NATIONALISM.
51 ho Chi Minh had no animosity towards the United States in the beginning and actually saw them as an ally for their help in beating the Japanese and assuming they would be in favour of ending colonial rule by France as they had ended their own colonial rule by England. The United States decided capitalism was more important than a foreign people’s self determination to rule themselves as they pleased
Roosevelt and Truman attempted to get Britain and France to not recolonize their former colonies. Churchill said no to the. De Gaulle said if France doesn't, then they will be perceived as weak and Russia will take over France. The US effort in supporting France was to help keep their homeland country free. France primarily left Vietnam because they didn't have sufficient number of soldiers in the Algerian war. Truman somehow dreamed up the Domino Theory. But Vietnam was a proxy war anyway between the two new super-nuclear powers, US and Russia. I believe if Oswald hadn't assassinated JFK, the war would not have escalated.

“civil” war", LOL. So basically, 58,318 american tourists "ACCIDENTALLY" traveled to Vietnam and "ACCIDENTALLY" died in VN. btw and 303,644 "ACCIDENTALLY"wounded too :v
@K John That's my whole point, which that I don't consider it a civil war either. The word "civil" here is only used as a trick to legalize America's invasion into other countries. And if you look closer, the Korean War is pretty much a battlefield between the world powers, while the Vietnam War is really between the Vietnamese and the Americans with their mercenaries from South Korea, Australia and so on.
@K John From what I know it is true that the Soviet and China did show efforts to pull the strings behind North Vietnam, but it turned out both the Soviet and China did not want Vietnam to unify at all. In the last days of the war, due to the tensions between Soviet and China, when Soviet was still supporting the North, China had made a conversation with the South to send troops to the Northern border in order to rescue the South. But it was the President of the South to decline the offer, in order not to shed more of the people's blood, and get the country to be unified. It was all the Vietnamese against foreign influences from world powers
In the Marine Corps the smallest guy was the tunnel rat. I went in six tunnels and almost didn’t come out of four of them. Scariest thing I ever did. Still have nightmares.

He saw 2500 hours in the air, doing a job for which the BBC estimated the life expectancy was _one minute._ He extended his tour in country twice ("I got addicted to the risk." -- his words), serving a total of 20 months {1965-67] and is still alive today.
I visited Vietnam just 4 months ago and also went to visit one of the tunnel systems. We had the opportunity to cross one of these tunnels that went on for I believe 300 m in total and it was one of the most claustrophobic experiences I made... and I'm not even claustrophobic. It was so narrow that I couldn't turn around and so low that I had to bend down not only my back but also by legs ^^ ... but I was lucky that I a a rather short woman, a guy in front of me was so huge, that he had to crawl on all fours in order to get through it. It was a very unique and rather terrifying experience to be so limited in the movements and I don't want to imagine how it would have been to be in the tunnels when being bombarded from above or having to transport injured comrades. It made me realize how lucky I am to be born into a peaceful country and time.
The tunnels in visitor areas have been made larger due to the girth of foreign visitors, especially women. In Timbuktu I was told that the camel saddles had to be strengthened for the same reason.
to be fair, those tunels was made for Vietnamese troops in 1960s, who were considerably shorter than average height. Even to this day, Vietnamese people are still considered as short, even compared to some fellow Asian like Chinese, Japanese or Korean
I have been back twice since the war. The country is beautiful and the people very friendly. It gave me closure to go back and receive such a warm welcome.
i went there too ... and its pretty claustrophobic. not for chickens like me. the country was very nice, with smiling people and rich culture - also amazing coffee.

You left out a few salient facts. After fighting with the US against the Japanese, at the end of WW II, Ho Chi Minh petitioned Truman and the US to recognize Viet Nam's independence. Charles DeGaulle wanted to keep Viet Nam as a French colony, so the US refused recognition to keep France in NATO. The irony was that France withdrew from NATO in the mid-60's, after the US got fully sucked into supporting South Viet Nam. Also, Richard Nixon, aided by Henry Kissinger and Anna Chennault, sabotaged the Paris Peace Talks in '68 to prevent LBJ ending the war, which almost certainly would have given the Democrats the Presidential Election. Through private back-channels, Nixon convinced the North Vietnamese they would get a better deal from him than from the Democrats. The talks were stalled, and Nixon won the election. The Republicans then continued the war for another SEVEN YEARS, resulting in tens of thousands of additional American casualties, just so Nixon could become President.
Gil, thank you very much for posting the REAL FACTS, that many posters on here seem totally ignorant of, even sadly, young Vietnamese. That's painfull for me to read.
You forgot the battle of Long Tan where 460 Australians defeated around 2,000 NVA troops, which earned great respect for the Australian soldiers from the NVA and VC. The respect was mutual.
Thank you, Infographics Show, for the data. Since the dawn of time, Viet Nam has been invaded by foreign powers set on exploitation and taking the land for themselves. Nguyen Sinh Cung repeatedly asked the US for help to remove the French invaders, so Eisenhower reluctantly agreed to send "advisors" to examine the predicament. After learning about all the plentiful resources (tin, rubber, fertile land, etc.), the US wanted the land as its own. Long story short - Nguyen becomes Ho Chi Minh (He Who Enlightens) and expels this new invader. Today, Viet Nam's people welcome US citizens as visitors and friends.

@@artfulcord so you mean the Americans really just had a trip there and were killed by the Vietnamese? What a bad choice unfortunately

Hey did you notice when you on your way, some of the tunnel was block off? I think those lead to deadly trap and dead end.

If the vietnam war documentary is true, the VN war was caused by a friendly fire between vietkong and CIA

Me as a Vietnamese talking to my friends: Quick! Guys pretend to be shocked!

@Phúc Hoàng Đăng wow making jokes here nice brotha.
Some people say "The US have LITERALLY NO BUSINESS starting that War vs. Vietnam ..." -- Please consider again regarding "BUSINESS", as per below
================
Domino theory ? Stop the spread of communism ? Protect the "free world" ? ...
# Maybe. But please consider the following first.
# Imagine I was the owner of a company that makes ammunition for the US-army guns, plus canned food for the US Military.
# If the war in Vietnam went ahead (i.e. killing people, Vietnamese and Americans; expected to last years), I'd stand to make maybe 100 billion dollars in total (makers of helicopter gunships, artillery shells, military clothing, ... would probably make more money)
# If there wasn't any war, then I would not have that 100 billion dollars.
# In that case (no war) I would try to destroy any obstacle on my way of getting that 100 billion dollars.
# President John F Kennedy was hesitant about invading Vietnam and starting a war (he knew about Vietnamese people's history and spirits), and about to declare USA's no-war and non-involvement (or drastically reduced involvement)
# Please suggest what I do to get my 100 billion dollars. Thanks.
US Military: We have One of the best nuclear weapon in the world, armored tanks, batttle ships,Armored plane
Vietnamese rice farmers: Hold my rice bag
You do realize that if the Americans drop the nuclear weapons on the north Vietnam, the Soviet will strike back.
Grape Abbas all politics. At the time, the Chinese did not have nukes. The Russians have no connection to Vietnam.
@@gerloke914 i didn't say anything about the Chinese. I mean i don't know much about the cold war btw but all i know is that the vietnam war felt pointless.

Old men talks and young men dies.
Some spicy Americans still use body counts as a way of saying “You didnt win WE win” they just cant admit that Vietnam win the war with their experience from the countless battles before the great Vietnam War. Americans seem to not know the pharse “Win the battle but lose the war” didnt they. A win is a win you retreat you lose no matter what excuses .
Also the fact some special eds patriots confuse *random civilian deaths* and actual *NVA, VC, Charlie, and NLF* deaths.
They won the war at a greater cost of there lives.
@@thirdstrike4u better than lose it and lost their country.

Well I mean, the Vietcong werent farmers, they were soldiers that hid in the jungle.
Rising Storm 2 in a nutshell
They are farmer before they are soldier
*Us soldier uses agent Orange* It's very effective
If we think the Taiwanese should be allowed to decide on how they are governed, why not also the Vietnamese.
America burnt and poisoned a far weaker country and people, but for what ? You can't do that just because you fear a domino effect. If you are afraid of communism then make Capitalism people friendly, that would be far more effective.
Ye idk what to say
You know, they scared communism, they could chose what the fck ever they wanted but not communism at that time

I love how americans still can't accept that they lost to a bunch of rice farmers. Like y'all won most of the wars, just accept your *one* defeat.
they are not only rice farmers, they are extremely brave warriors that every country army desires
Calling them rice farmers is an insult, the Viet Cong were experienced fighters that were engaged in guerilla warfare since WW2
@@veronicalee5875 Vietnam is lucky because America doesn't use nuclear
@@kokolee3274 you guys just never learnt. It was never about the weapons or the political system. We just wanted freedom & peace, thats all. We were lucky. Yes. So sick of hearing the word "democracy" . We are a republic.
we are generally considered democracy because of our democratic principle even though we are a democratic republic.

It was about Vietnamese protected their country, not about Democracy and Communist. At the very first place Vietnam lost its freedom to France, asking the US to help on building a democracy government but the US helped France instead. After that Vietnamese librated their land by follow the Communist. When the French retreated, they and American support to people who followed them before to create an illegal government without election called South Vietnam. That was how Vietnam American war began
