- Finale act 1 of HMS Pinafore 1930. Charles Goulding as Ralph Rackstraw, Elsie Griffin as Josephine, Darrell Fancourt as Dick Deadeye, Sydney Granville as Bill Bobstay and Nellie Briercliffe as Hebe.
Its my favourite too! I myself enjoy Charles Gouldings wonderful tenor voice and also Darrell Fancourt is one of my favourites.
I know! Fancourt has such a perfect balance of menace and comedy while still being very likable. I’m not a complete purist; I still enjoy certain, new interpretations. But hardly anyone rivals these actors. Well, maybe the 1960 recording with Reed…maybe.
Best recording I've yet to hear, I especially enjoy Elsie Griffin.
Too bad the phonograph hadn't been perfected by 1870, then those would have been great recordings (well, if they were to survive). But yeah, I just keep coming back to your videos for these beautiful pieces, thank you for posting them!
Maybe, 60s were good times, Reed, Sandford, Masterson, Adams, Round etc. But the golden era of D'Oyly Carte were the 20s and early 30s!
Oh yes, we can never hear the voices of such artists as George Grossmith, Richard Temple, Durward Lely, Jessie Bond or Leonora Braham ( I think Rutland Barrington made some recordings).
Yes, I have now uploaded Pinafore, Mikado, Princess Ida, Patience, two Trial by Jurys and next project is perharps The Gondoliers. Glad you enjoy them :)
But there are recordings of Richard Temple! I've heard him in excerpts as the Mikado and Pirate King. Wonderful stuff!!
