I guess you mean with the same characters? All the Star Ocean games do take place in the same universe, just with alot of time passing between them, and no shared characters. Except for Blue Sphere on the Gameboy Color, which is a direct sequel to this, like @ClumsyCatboy said.
There is an anime Star Ocean EX based on this game and a manga too. Both end in the same place but a drama CD (you can find a subbed version on YT) continues the story and has a different ending than the game does.

I might be old cause i still like the look of the PS1 game more. I will say that the new version has better character art then the PSP verion, i never liked how child lke they made them look in the PSP. Also the new 3d environments look ok, but theres just something about the originals 3d rendered backgrounds.

They pretty much HAD to change her age... the art made her look too freaking young. There's a term for how she looked, but I'm not going to say it. Man, the PSP art was horrendous.
I actually like the psp artstyle better. Claude was supposed to look like a beta because of the plot reason where he got insecure with Dias. For Rena I like the PSP art better. But for plot reason it's just too creepy because she looks like a child.

Upon further review, I've found two mistakes in the video: At 0:50 and 0:54 I recorded it in Claude's playthrough. The trailer is actually using scenes from Rena's perspective - the ball of light is from her opening, and Rena gets attacked from the left in her game, and the right in Claude's. (I've started new games of Rena and have the correct footage now, but getting all the optional cutscenes for an updated video is not easy, so no promises.)

PSP got anime cutscenes. They won for me. I like the new graphics sure but they took out what makes so2 memorable for me. I said for me. Not everyone has same feelings for it. I just love anime cutscenes similar to how tales does it back then.

The original pre rendered backgrounds were amazing works of art. The asset store UE4 generic forest combined with carboard sprites in the remake looks ridiculous in comparison.
I don`t hate the PSP look (although the character art does seem a bit generic to me), but i think both the PSX original and the remake blow it out of the water.
My only gripe : They made all the environments look much better, reworked every model and area entirely to make it look much better, but still kept the 2d character models which makes everything look like a ds game
Lovely to see the comparison between the 3. So far, the remake is the best in terms of visual performance. For artwork, I like the new artwork from the remake in contrast to the cutesy artwork of the seemingly PSP version. The artwork and the way dialogue of each character feels like the original Valkyrie Profile with a bit of polish! With this, I am HOPING Valkyrie Profile gets a new lease in life since Star Ocean was remade! :D Just hoping :P
the orignal had the best anime artwork, the best music, the best UI design and the best voice acting. they should have allowed people to keep all of these in the remake.
Does anyone know if they fixed the odd dialogue between characters that can sometimes take place if you have too many party members? In the original, I noticed especially that the dialogue makes a lot more sense if you only have Rena and Claude in your party.
Imim not sure but there is a part of story telling called "private scenes" where it removes members to interact with side stories. I never played the original so i cant compare but the remake on it's own is fantastic imo
That isn’t quite what I am referring to. One example I will use without spoilers- late in the game, Rena discovers a huge secret about her heritage. If Claude is the only party member that you have, her dialogue with him is much different with him than if you have other party members with you.

The psp art looks horrendously ugly and poorly made. Like literally it's just a simple outline with paint bucket job with an ugly moe blob art style. It's just garbage. The 90s version and the new version look so much better.

It’s also closer to what you’d see in animation because trying to animate the other two art styles would be a nightmare. It’s calling cell-shading trash vs. realistic graphics, or One Piece art bad over something like Psycho Pass.

This is one of the best JRPG Remakes I have ever seen one remake that might top it is MARIO RPG though I never played Mario RPG but from what I saw it’s the same game but with updated graphics no change in battle system or story like GARBGE FFVII
So much is going to be lost because of the changes in the environments. The Pre-Rendered backgrounds were actually great, and now they are gone. The 3D environments aren't bad but they just don't give off the same vibe as the originals. It looks like Square is ripping out the heart and soul of the another game in the name of modernization. I feel like once people get over the original wow factor they will end up going back to the original over this remake. Voice acting, character art, movies, and combat all seem to be improved. The music will be hit or miss, hopefully they provide the option to use the original soundtrack. I still want them to add the original PS1 version to the PS Classics lineup.
At last, I find some people who think like me. This remake seems to improve very well the combat system (after trying the demo), the portrait art is way better than the psp version for me. They looked like they were 12-14. most of the cast is in fact already adult, or approaching adulthood I disliked the old remaster's portraits. My main grip is the new 3D art in general, it seems so bland, so generic. The colour palette in the shingo forest or in the kross cave is so different and not in a good way. It's less detailed in a lot of parts. The tiny docks INSIDE the houses in Arlia have disappeared for example, the atmosphere of the kross cave is just not there anymore. Star Ocean 2 is losing a big part of what made its charm, made it unique and sadly, it appears it's not nostalgia gnawing at the back of my neck. (I absolutely cannot complain about the new background during combat though.)
Yes, the effect wears off after 10+ hours. I started to notice patterns and dungeons with lazy design or generic asset. The original was crafted and this one is just a copy.

Abstractly I understand why some folks here prefer the PSX or PSP versions since I’m the same way with preferring the original Spyro games to the way the Reignited games look. I can’t join y’all literally whatsoever here though. R has to be one of the handful of best looking games I’ve ever seen imo, even from just the short trailer.
The backgrounds are gorgeous. And the character models are nice, but the characters are jarring. I'm wishing they had made the characters less sprite-ish.

Seeing it like this, I really don't like the new character sprites. Don't get me wrong, they're nicely made, but they stand out TOO MUCH from the gorgeous backgrounds.
I surely can't be the only one who's beyond excited for the remake? Usually with remakes I'm just like, "that's cool", but SO2 was one of my favourite RPGs growing up and seeing it done justice like this is incredible. The 3D environments alone are great, to say nothing of the lighting, camera angles and other visual effects, but also the changes to the battle system almost make this feel like a completely new game while still feeling very familiar. I'm confident that all but the most stubborn and cynical will be converted if they play the demo. If I have one minor complaint, it's that I wish they kept the 3D models of the items especially during item creation, but I understand that would have been a lot of extra work. All in all, November can't come soon enough.

Claud's best move is metor palm now! mirror blade is awefull! ripper blast/rock explosion is also way worse but still usable i guess! sword of life is really good now! dragon roar also nerfed into the ground! knuckel burst the only good shield breaker. Precis fucking rules! Opera as OP as always. welch hits like a truck but only got 2 good moves and gets boring really fast. ernest is greate now!...wtf! still dislike his personalty and the voice does not help and the things he says DIas got the nerfed into the ground. Ashton as well. chisato is realy weak now! noel...well. shit as always. bowman = no precis so NO!! cecil, rena and leon are mages ... only good at that new support mechanic to cast spells instantly.
Growing up in the 90's, PS1 jrpgs are beautiful and nostalgic to me. I'll always prefer the original. I'm also really tired of the pop-up book art style remakes, it's very overused and it doesn't look right with many of these games. The only good one was the Live A Live remake. All that being said, I am happy though that recently Square is finally putting in effort to keep these old classics alive for the younger crowd.
I don't like the direction the Remake is going. 😰 This is not how I imagined a Remake would be. 😩 I know that the Remakers wanted to retain the same Sprites, but they look out of place with the new Backgrounds. At least make them HD or better yet, Modern 3D Polygon!

I can use more buzzwords but It would just be beating a dead horse. The original art and the New art look great though. I prefer the orginal backgrounds to the ugly Unreal HIRE THIS MAN full 3D background but they aren't a deal breaker either.
I honestly prefer the art style of Second Evolution over Second Story R. Second Story R is overly detailed, in my opinion. It's not bad, just distracting. Second Evolution, on the other hand, is simpler and cleaner, it looks like it could be from an anime.

I can use more buzzwords but It would just be beating a dead horse. The original art and the New art look great though. I prefer the orginal backgrounds to the ugly Unreal HIRE THIS MAN full 3D background but they aren't a deal breaker either.

I honestly prefer the art style of Second Evolution over Second Story R. Second Story R is overly detailed, in my opinion. It's not bad, just distracting. Second Evolution, on the other hand, is simpler and cleaner, it looks like it could be from an anime.
Psp art looks really ugly, It's horribly dated and really out of place, especially compared to the ps1 and remasterd version
@sanictheedgehog the PS1 art is horrible, what are you even on? The PSP art looks like it could be airing on Crunchyroll today.
