The composition uses traditional aesthetics in many points, especially the ostinato and the Baroque harmony.

You know, I was just thinking how cool it would be to have a showing of the film somewhere with an organ, and the organist would play a modified version of the entire suite behind the movie, accompanied by a choir for the vocals. That would be an awesome experience.

Occasionally Philip Glass will tour the film with his Ensemble and perform the accompaniment live. I was lucky enough to see him (and Michael Reisman conducting and performing) in Melbourne last year.

Reuben Lai it's not a bad thing at all, in fact, there's a lot of Glass inspired stuff in other Zimmer compositions, like inception. Nonetheless, Glass influence over western music today it's massive, and again, it's not a bad thing. There's will be no Glass without Cage or Riley...

    • @theexchipmunk

It is actually directly referenced in one of the interstellar pieces. Something like that is often done to give credit to the pice they got the inspiration from. If you ever heard the full Fringe intro you will probably notice the part where the X-Files comes through.

I transcribed it by ear. The arpeggios at 6:24 are D (right hand plays D-A-D-A), A minor (E-A-E-A), and G minor (D-G-D-G). Then it gets slightly more complicated when the arpeggios move to the left hand.

  • @rockgodstu

    @vanburikwouter
I'm using the Baroque voicing of the organ, as opposed to the Romantic voicing.
    Swell: Digital Choir
Great: (left hand) Principal 8, Rohrflute 8, Quintadena 8, Open Flute 4, Swell to Great
Choir: (right hand) Principal 8, Octave 4
Pedal: Diapason 16, Choir to Pedal
At 6:24 for the Koyaanisqatsi reprise I add the Subbass 32 and Digital Choir (from the swell division) to the Pedal.

Nature, evolution, science, God.... whatever it is. This is why man is here. To explore the emotion found in music, sound, art, love.
I watch this man playing, and all I can think about is the senseless destruction and conflict all around us. The most beautiful things we have done will be lost and overshadowed by the ugly.

      Like you've failed.
You feel like the answer is there, it is obvious, you know it, others know it, and yet the vast mass of humanity does not know it, and never will... and you take that as a personal failing that YOU somehow failed to spread the message, failed to impress upon others the gravity of the lesson, the gravity of the consequences of not heeding the lesson. You tried; you pleaded, wailed in anguish that others might see the deep effect this lesson has had upon you, how it has changed you and sculpted you... with fire, and pain.
And in the quiet between the notes, that is where the great gulf of horror opens up to your eyes, and you see the endless fall of humanity, into terror and butchery, and despair... into awful darkness.
And there is nothing for it. You know the truth. You know the path... and you can not avert them from their drive and urge. Yet you will live on, watching the descent into the abyss, into the deepest pit of hell.
You are crying for humanity, for it's soul. You are weeping as Jesus wept, because no matter the messenger, there will always be those who will not heed the message. It matters not what they would benefit from it; they simply will not, can not by their constitution, heed it, and so the suffering of incarnation will continue.
And yet you heard the lesson, owned it and lived it. You rose above the terror, and opened your heart to the horror, transforming that part of it that was yours to transform. You changed the universe and all its future... and yet the pain and suffering will continue. There is no 'bottom' to your sorrow. It will always be there, and unrequited.
You must take heart, have courage, and give humility... from these will come the compassion needed to observe horror and not descend again into the pathos and sympathy of grief and despair.
      You, can do this.
Do not despair. Rather, accept, deeply and completely, the abject, awful suffering of existence. If you would do this, completely, then your own suffering will be dissolved, and the weight upon existence of your suffering's existence... will transform to 'levity', the opposite force of gravity.
In short, you can make a difference, but you can only make the difference that you can make. You can make the difference of a sentient being, seeing the truth, owning it, and transcending it through wisdom and compassion. There is no greater task, no harder experience, no more valuable life, than this.
Bless your broken, weeping heart, for it is necessary that it break before it can grow... grow as large as the universe and all of existence... and then your power might be what you seek: to end suffering.
      Bless You

      It's Hopi
If you have the movie look at the end credits, were the translation of "prophecies" can be found.
      What the sing is this..
Koyaanisqatsi the bass vocal was, Albert de Ruiter if i am not mistaken. From my country, the Netherlands. Not sure on that, as it's a 100% dutch name :)
"If we dig precious things from the land, we will invite disaster."
"Near the day of Purification, there will be cobwebs spun back and forth in the sky."
"A container of ashes might one day be thrown from the sky, which could burn the land and boil the oceans."

Thanks for the info! I was however talking about the original Hopi dialect which is sung in the music, the lyrics of which escape me.

Being "Lunatic" is dependent on customs of the surrounding people. Anyway, check /watch?v=ijSnWFXEqBs
Someone kinda modernized it and I personally like it better that way. The bad about it is that all of the text is gone except that one word (something about being out of balance/in turmoil if I recall correctly).

This is actually in the same key as JS Bach's Toccata & Fugue: the brooding D minor. // I see a color-shape for each note. For me D, joy (see Beethove's Ode to Joy symphony #9) is a lively orange color. // But when in the minor mode D (minor) becomes a ghoulish, Halloween Jack-O-Lantern orange!
For anyone interested, my work on this subject is here at: _The Acoustic Rabbit Hole_
Amazing, concise and straightforward performance, by the way. The way it _should_ be for Phillip Glass! Ha. // I also like the way you too the liberty to form an arrangement for the pieces by using different parts. This Glass WORKS!
    Your, _Acoustic Rabbit Hole_

Sounds great! I normally prefer pipes over electronics, but for obvious reasons this music works better on an electronic organ (the original orchestration, after all). For Maudy Thursday I often play the opening/closing music (7:20 in your video) as a chorale prelude on O Sacred Head - just add the tune in the pedal, it works perfectly!

Thanks, I could be wrong, but don't think you mentioned the third film in the "qatsi" trilogy, Naqoyqatsi: Life as War from 2002. I immediately fell in love with the first film when it first came out in '82 and used to bore my friends (and dates) with it. I was an obsessive artist back then and although I gave it up, this music still affects me deeply.

It wouldn't matter to me, but I don't own the copyright to the music itself.

Very nice arrangement and interpretation! Did you write it yourself or did you buy an arrangement? I'd very much like to get a copy myself!
