Aloha from the islands. Respect for you lake surfers.I really like how where you park to go out is usually kind of in the middle of nowhere. Like how surfing was way back when we were young!
Respect to this man in the interview. He's one of the pioneers of the region's surfing community. The wave look very impressive as well. What's great is how most if not all of these surfers respect each other, and the sport. Great interview here, enjoyed seeing it. Thank you, C A
Gotta hand it to you guys! You are just as stoked and dedicated as any ocean surfers for sure. Love the camaraderie and lack of selfishness you guys have toward one another. Those lefts look super fun too.
I'm gonna surf tomorrow morning and it's gonna be the coldest day we've had in a while here in San Diego at 35 degrees, I know I'm not gonna feel very motivated when that alarm goes off tomorrow morning but this definitely makes me feel more motivated. These guys got icicles hanging off their eyelashes! Absolutely psycho
For sure… looks fun and what a unique place to surf too … Take off is real easy (as you said) but you wouldn’t want to miss it and get caught inside, judging by 02:00 … looked gnarly in there with a rock bottom and only ankle to /knee deep at best…
We surfed Lake Erie in 1967 in November.........only wore double sweatshirts and had a beach bonfire for the cold. -Lake Erie Storm Surfer , with a 9ft. Wardy board.
My mother grew up in Chicago and used to swim in Lake Michigan. They had arule that you had to come in out of the water when your ilps turned blue. That was about 15 minutes. There were no wet suits or dry suits back then. She moved to Hollywood with her mother after my grandfather died. She was going to go swimming in the Pacific Ocean during the winter and everyone told her it was too cold. She went into the water anyway and thought they were nuts because the water temperature was fine.
You remind of a time when I was young and body boarding with a thin plank. I went into 52F water during a warm day (but cold ocean current) but couldn't get a wave because the surfers were all faster than me at catching them. After a while I stopped shivering and after about 2 hours my mind started getting a bit disjointed so I came in. The beach sand was supposed to be hot but it felt cold to me. I lay down in it and after about 30 minutes I started shivering again lol!
@@greatbriton8425 Summer of '65 my father got orders to San Diego. We were living in Arlington, VA. My parents wanted to make a vacation of it and we stopped off to visit her relatives in Chicago. Her uncle owned a cabin in the Wisconsin Dells and we all knew how to swim. We went out to the end of the pier and it took about a half of a day to get used to the water because it was so cold. But if you grow up in teh area, I am sure it is OK. This was before the Dells turned into a big water park.
I’have been surfing for over 25 years and I can say straight up, you guys are the best embassadors for our wonderful passion! Respect! Continue to have fun and be healthy!

Respect!! ✊🏼 You guys are awesome! The real deal! More stoked and dedicated to surfing than so many living in ideal surf spots. I’m so fascinated with this region; I wanna surf there to say I did it, but it seems finicky and hard to predict. If I plan to make the drive to catch a swell up there, it’s not like watching weather buoy days in the oceans to plan. How or when can I know I’ll score if I make the trip?
Nice looking waves! I thought surfing in New Jersey in February was really cold, the winds where you guys surf must be brutal. Wetsuits have come a long way since when my buddies and I started, basically pants and a jacket with a beaver tail and two clasps to keep your pants on until someone came up with the farmer John which was 100 times better. Nothing worse than having your zipper break and having your bottoms fill with water. Like getting kicked in the jewels and the worst ice cream headache imaginable, simultaneously. Hats off to you guys! Surfing is like the mob, once you’re in you can’t get out. Nobody minds though.
South ender here (lake michigan) about the same time line as you greg. I've surfed with the ice balls many times but Superior is a different kind of cold it's cold. Props 2 u northerners from the tribe in the tropical south . The Dairyland was the meca 4 the tribe.
For someone who's surfed many winters on the east coast, you guys are f'n soldiers!!! Coldest water I've surfed (in NC/Outer Banks) was around 40f, and I saw two harbor seals that winter!!! If we didn't live 75/100 yards from the water that winter, I probably would've skipped most of those cold days... ...or at least the small and/or choppy days!
Not just guys Mr.. I know a lady from Tofte that regularly surfs. She is good. She works at that gift shop on the east side of the highway. Met her last year. Sold me some good mosquito repellent. I'm the old guy with the white beard. She is tough.
Doesn't seem like the fetch would be long enough to form a legit long-period groundswell, but...there it is. I guess the Great Lakes don't care too much whether that's supposed to happen or not.
I love what I’m seeing! 🤙🏼 An untapped industry awaits along the shores of Superior. Ice climbing, surfing, red light district…the possibilities are endless.🏄♀️
What product is best for cold water surfboard wax??? I've been using sticky bumps cold but the board will still glaze over. Then I'm applying more wax til it happens again. Anybody??? Bueler Bueler 🤙💪✌️
@@Elloguvanah thanks for getting back to me. Appreciate ur advice 🤙 in Mqt trying it for the first season since 32 yrs ago in SoCal..oh, Mqt is going off this weekend per Surf Captain app
On the east coast(NJ) I always used “cold” sticky bumps in the winter. In the summer I’d go for Mrs Palmers “warm”. It never gave me rashes like the other brands.
It's an area known as Minnesota's north shore, it's not just some surfing term tied to Hawaii. Yeah he's using it sorta tongue in cheek in relation to that, but get over yourself.

That's a legit overhead+ long period groundswell, not a bunch of windchop. Thanks for sharing your waves with us my friend, Semper Fidelis!

You guys RULE!! Anybody who suits up in the snow deserves all the waves they can catch!!!
Soft entry, wave face is not too steep, no closeout, head-high. Excellent conditions (even with the freezer burn). I'd be stoked.
