"Stop And Smell The Roses" is my second-favorite Ringo Starr album, after his 1973 "Ringo" album. It's just too bad Ringo and John Lennon didn't get to record the songs John was to record with him for the album. Supposedly, "Nobody Told Me" and the ironically titled, "Life Begins At 40".
The writer is obviously unfamiliar with Two Virgins, Life With The Lions, and The Wedding Album. If they weren’t included because they were released while the Beatles were still together, then they have to remove Wonderwall Music from the list. Speaking of Wonderwall Music, it’s actually a fine listen as a soundtrack if you’re willing to not expect traditional songs. It’s much stronger than George’s Electronic Sounds… which must be viewed as a prototype for Metal Machine Music. They could have found a slot for Kisses On The Bottom too, an album we certainly didn’t need or want from McCartney. Gone Troppo is much worse than Somewhere in England. At least the later has a hit song on it. Paul’s Russian album isn’t bad, but is very underwhelming. Run Devil Run is a better album of rock and roll covers.
Ok, I don’t agree at all with Wild Life, Sometime in NY City, McCartney 2, Ringo’s Christmas album, Sentimental Journey, and Vertical Man. I got a bit bored with Ringo’s recent records after Liverpool 8, so reviewing them is hard for me to do fairly. I have a fondness for some of the slightly mediocre albums like Old Wave and Stop and Smell the Roses, because they have some good songs. There is an older Rhino records comp that I bought again recently that rescues some of the better tracks from his poorer albums, Starr Struck. I think that’s a decent comp to have as a companion to Blast From the Past. I was kind of surprised that George’s Gone Troppo wasn’t on the list, or John’s first three experimental albums with Yoko, or George’s Electronic Sounds. Or more live albums. And what about McCartney albums like Kisses in the Bottom or The Family Way soundtrack. I mean things that are kind of nonessentials rather than hammering on some decent albums here!
Thanks, Larry! It's actually Ernest "the third" 83 (the III as in "the third" which IS my name since I'm the third Ernest born in my family. I'm not a king, I'm just "the third". Ha). It's ok, you're not the only one to be confused by that on here and I've been meaning to change it to something else on here because of that but I keep putting it off. Ha. Vertical Man, Ringo's Xmas album, and yes, McCartney II I think are good albums. Surprised Kisses On The Bottom and Gone Troppo didn't make the list since it seems most people rank them pretty low although I think Gone Troppo is underrated.
I like Paul's Russian album Larry,Paul's Driving Rain I find his worst album,I don't know Ringo's albums except his Ringo album which is very good,I owned George's Material World and Extra Texture with Material World being the better album,my favorite John Lennon album is Walls and Bridges and I feel Wildlife wasn't finished although it had some good songs on it and I think Sometime In New York City was John's worst album. Bob
I bought Wild Life when it was priced down 50%. In Dutch we have the saying They could not sell it to the stones of the street. That should have been a warning, what a poor excuse for an album by a former Beatle.
I bought into the anti-hype for this album, so I never really gave it a chance. When I actually played it, I found it a charming album even if a bit lightweight. A “B” tier album for me.
Im a huge fan and ill listen to 'Wildlife' 2-3 times a year but i've always thought it's my least favourite post Beatles Paul release. I really like the title track, Dear friend and Tomorrow, Love is strange is nice but - i like every other album more so..... each to their own eh?
The way I see it, anything in the bottom half of this list isn’t really a bad album in my opinion. It’s just not a favorite of mine. So Wild Life would fall into that category for me. And I’ve definitely heard the album many times and I never read a book in the 80s (mostly since I wasn’t born until 1994 😅).
"Sometime in NY City" is my 3rd favorite Lennon album ... I looooove "Wild Life" .... and where are all the avant-garde Lennon bullshit albums on this list ... lay off of Ringo,: a lot of his albums on this list that are actually okay!
Yeah no interest in Ringo Albums , but Press to Play and Driving Rain are in my top 10 Macca albums , love Sometime in NYC and love Somewhere in England !! still what do I know !!!😛
"... or I am just going ballistic", Larry said. Never heard that. Funny! By the way, never noticed, that Ringo released so many solo albums (and maybe so many bad ones?).
I actually quite enjoy both Vertical Man and What’s My Name by Ringo. In fact Vertical Man competes with Goodnight Vienna as my favorite of his solo career.
I like Pipes of Peace and the actual song is great. I love all Paul's albums up until Memory almost full. I know Larry you loved Egypt Station but I struggled with that with Paul's old aged voice, it's not his fault obviously but found it a difficult listen , same with McCartney 3
I agree with you that McCartney 2 shouldn't be on the list, it's a cool little album. I wouldn't put Extra Texture or Somewhere in England on there either. The former is a bit melancholy but I think it's a beautiful album, the later hasn't got a single song I don't like and as with most of George's album it is made with care. Also Wonderwall is a psychedelic gem. Ringo's Sentimental Journey is utterly charming and for me has the best of Ringo's character.
People dont get how important ringo starr was to the beatles. Just look how much carrying he’s doing on this list! Hilarious list. Perhaps just do a separate list without poor Ringo. IMO 'Wonderwall' does not belong on a list like this, because it was soundtrack album that George Harrison mainly intended as a stage for Indian musicians. There are a few interesting rock instrumentals and short incidental pieces on the album, but it's mainly Indian music and has nothing to do with Beatles - solo or otherwise (well, apart from being on Apple).
