I'm glad you enjoyed Michigan. I lived here my entire life and absolutely love it here. Mackinac has a silent c by the way. Mackinaw and Mackinac have the same pronunciation.
Good day, just found your videos. We have a 30ft Thundercraft and do all our boating on lake since and the trent system. I have to say I really enjoyed your videos and l must say have learned alot in the few that I have watched so far. Keep up the great work and be safe
Your AIS info was useful, We just got ours and waiting for spring to get here so we can finally install it. Together with radar, it makes a nice navigation aid for difficult weather conditions
First time washer, watcher. Now I'll have to subscribed and go back to watch all your other videos. I can't wait to do the great loop myself, From Niagara-on-the-Lake , Ontario 🇨🇦
Really enjoying your great loop videos. Just wanted to point out that “Macinac Island” Is pronounced “Mack-in-awe”. I used to live near there and miss its quiet charm ( and fudge).
New subscriber to your channel. We are in the planning stages for our loop trip in 5 years. We have learned a lot from your videos. This episode is one of our favorites. Born and raised in Michigan and married on Mackinac Island 23 years ago! NC is home now.
I used to fly for the airlines between Chicago and Milwaukee and various destinations in MI, IN, OH, etc and, yes, you can see across Lake Michigan at reasonably modest altitudes with adequate visibility. On a clear day, the whole lake is visible if crossing it in the flight levels (above 18,000’). Looks like a great trip -thanks for sharing!
I believe we were in Mack City during this storm as well......waited 3 days for the lake to calm down. Went from Detroit to Grand Haven.....Great trip!!!
Thank you, that was a great instructional on the AIS data and how to use it. I Will (I’m convincing myself here) do the Loop at some point, and this was super helpful...
hi, just ran into your videos and subscribed. I live not far from Bay City in Michigan and been dreaming of doing the loop also. I learned a lot watching your video and want to thank you. If you ever come thru the great lakes again and want or need a hand,,,, id love to motor with you and learn a few things. Again, thanks for the great videos and the info too.
Michaels Walk Thru Life : Hey, thanks for the nice feedback. I'm glad you are enjoying the videos, and I hope you are able to do your own loop trip some day. But, you must understand that you are pre-spoiled. The Great Lakes and Canada are the best parts of the whole loop. Best of luck to you in your future adventures.
Been watching all ur video journeys......thanks so much for sharing. I had just purchased a loop boat in 2016 Marinette 39 double cabin but developed health issues and could not do loop Livin the life in Slow Belles
Back in the late 70's a friend and I went out to Little Manitou Island ( National Park land), about 10 miles by boat from Leland Michigan, to hike around the island for a couple of days. The last night we planned on being there a big storm blew in and the seas were high so the next day the boats from Leland did not come out to drop off or pick up so we spent a day longer than planned. The seas were still up on the second day but the boats came out. The ferry wasn't a huge boat (probably 60-70 feet) and the seats inside filled quickly so by the time my friend and I got on the available seats were on an open deck area on the stern. The seas were following on the way in (coming from the west per normal patterns) and big waves would loom 5-10 feet up over the stern before the boat would rise and the waves would pass under the boat, coming within a couple feet of the stern rail. The pucker factor was high. The Great Lakes should never be underestimated. They are not the ocean but they are are a force to be reckoned with.
If I ever got a boat, I'd travel up to Mackinac Island for Labor Day and then immediately head to the Calumet River at Chicago to the IL River, to the Mississippi River and south while trying to beat the earliest frost dates along the route.
Across from Leland are North and South Manitou islands. They are great places to camp, and South Manitou is a great anchorage, it's common to see a boat or two stopped there.
Just to clear something you said about AIS. You can see the green triangles because the boats have AIS transponders along with GPS antennas. The radio frequency transmits the GPS coordinates to your boat and the chart plotter shows those coordinates on you boat. The AIS receiver on other boats recognizes it's location and displays it on their chart plotter as long as you in the reach of the signal transmission distance. I hope this is clearer than mud.
Very good practical explanation of AIS (VHF) versus radar. This section of your video could be a stand alone "teaching aid"? It has value not only to boaters but also to pilots and Ham Radio geeks.- It shows propagation of VHF radio compared to higher frequency LOS 6ghz? radar.
Marty Halpin : I used a product called On & Off. You can get it at West Marine and elsewhere. It is very fast, and very toxic. Lemon Juice works pretty good and is less toxic, but it takes longer.
Don't mean to be critical, just informational. Below is cut and pasted from Google on the subject, along with I was raised very close to the island.. " Whether it is spelled Mackinaw as in Mackinaw City or Mackinac as in Mackinac Island, they are pronounced the same way: Mack-i-naw. ... The word became shortened to Mackinac. " If you dig into the subject of the 2 spelling the Mackinac was from French influence and was from the french translating the American Indian word. The Mackinaw was from British influence, I assume from at a slightly later date. But in the end they are both pronounced the same.
@@seattleboatguy We've been on the Chicago River many times. View never gets old. Wintered our previous boat at the Canal Street Marina which borders the CSX bridge which you will pass. Not sure of your height requirements but the main bridges in downtown only lift on a (very) limited schedule in the Spring and Fall. The CSX bridge which is very low does lift on demand. When you pass under the Jackson Street bridge, wave. We live 4 block away on Jackson!
sorry you had transmission problems . glad your back underway . I guess I'll have to through my anchor out if mine fails. how many hours were on the transmission ?
Tim Benson : There are about 3,000 hours on the engines, so I would guess there are about 3,000 hours on the transmissions. But, I've only owned the boat for 4 years, so all I can do is guess.
AUGH! You're driving everyone from Michigan crazy I hope you know. All three (4 if you count The Bridge) are pronounced the same way Mack-i-naw, even when they're spelled Mackinac. Hope you picked up some fudge there either in Mackinaw City or on Mackinac Island. I'm not positive but if you Loop again you may find more shopping available in St. Ignace (on the north side of the Straights) or if you come up the west side of Lake Huron you can stop in Cheboygan, about 20 miles SE of Mackinaw City
Great video. My only complaint is the damage you did to my Michigander ears when you say Mackinack Island. It’s pronounced the same way you pronounce Mackinaw city.
It's a bit confusing but Mackinac is also pronounced "Mackinaw" it's just a more french spelling of the word, but plenty people also pronounce the "k" sound.
You’re killing me! Mac in Knack??? Mackinaw and Mackinac are pronounced the exact same way and I’m shocked you didn’t here anyone on the island pronounce it.
Barney Rubel : I'm not really sure what to expect on the Illinois River. The good news is that I will likely be meeting up with other Looper boats, and maybe we can all figure it out together.
I'm glad you enjoyed Michigan. I lived here my entire life and absolutely love it here. Mackinac has a silent c by the way. Mackinaw and Mackinac have the same pronunciation.
Good job Doug. It's great to see you on the move again and hopefully all of the painful repairs are behind you.
Thanks, Bob. You're not missing much today. A wet and windy day at anchor.

Wonderful video! The movie “Somewhere in Time” was filmed at The Grand Hotel. Benton Harbor will be a great stop for you, good restaurants there.

very well done, we live here, safe travels
Your are a wonderful teacher!
good video and very informative.
I had to chuckle at your pronunciations of Grand Traverse Bay, and Mackinaw Island. Winter is something you don't want to experience on Lake Michigan.

Are you heading up to Chicago and taking the South Branch, or exiting Lake Michhigan at Cal Harbor taking the Calumet River?
Tony C : Hi Tony. Right now, the plan is to go through downtown Chicago and the Sanitary And Ship Canal to Joliet.

Great video. My only complaint is the damage you did to my Michigander ears when you say Mackinack Island. It’s pronounced the same way you pronounce Mackinaw city.

Yachta Yachta Yachta is my dad's boat!
Sierra Wellman : A clever boat name, and easy to remember.
Mackinac island is pronounced the same as Mackinaw city. Mackinaw.
Scampering! I bet you watched a lot of Mr. Rogers growing up!
Steve Tadlock : I didn't realize Mr Roger's was a "scampering" kind of guy. Maybe I should get a red sweater?
