in my opinion this sequence is and remains the GOAT feat of OTB chess calculation. there are some other really amazing gems of pure calculation in Alekhine's game history, especially his blind-fold simul game (as black) with Gonsiorovsky in 1916
Games like this make me think a lot of the older elite GMs were much stronger than the ones today that have the benefit of engines and computers. This is all pure calculation and all over the board, no correspondence.
@@davidagbi4550 It's possible - players today for sure have a lot more knowledge and understanding about positions, due to sheer passage of time, analysis, and accumulation of knowledge across generations, but in terms of pure calculation or seeing lines, maybe the masters of old were on par with the modern ones (or sometimes better?) !
#Suggestion An Alekhine saga will be much appreciated, Agad! Historians said that this man was better in tactical play than Mikhail Tal Himself. Also, this iconic rook move is called alekhines block, when used as black, so some stuffs to know..
@@saumenroy8710 AA was a universal player who could easily hold his own against the best modern day players. Tal was more of a fierce and imaginative attacker. I’m sure both would be excellent today at their primes.
@@saumenroy8710 not a chance, Tal tactics are impossible to even comprehend. Yes he is one of the best but not better than Tal when it comes to tactics
These are my favourite Agad videos. Blend of history and chess, it’s a treat and I hope more sagas will be made on some of these historic and important chess players
I have been following this channel for more than 5 years now. This game is easily in the top-3 in all of the games shown so far in the channel for its magnificence, majestic brilliance and glory. Alekhine, take a bow! What stupendous over the board calculation!
#suggestion If you are going to cover all of Alekhine's games in this tournament, consider making Alekhine saga. It's been almost a year since Morphy saga ended. Those players stories are definitely most magical of all of your content. Getting to know history of those champions and their times and seeing their path of improving and becoming the best is so exemplary.
Antonio, thank you for bringing more attention to Alekhine's games. We need his saga on your channel desperately. He is my favorite chess player, and his games have inspired me ever since. People always underline Capablanca's engine precision in the endgame and simple but pure playing style, but "Man shall not live by bread alone" and "Beauty Will Save the World".
I love when you cover historical games. The stories are rich, the context given is enlightening, and your passion for the game seems to show just a little bit brighter in these videos
That slo-mo rook move is amazing! At regular speed it appears to be going in a straight line. Not until you see it in slo-mo do you realize that Alekhine is moving his piece in a spiral fashion! Maybe that's why he was so good. :-)
I counted 13 engine-precise moves (as Antonio put it) by white that Alekhine needed to calculate. Absolutely unreal, and what a tournament result for him! 12-0-8, holy smokes
Vast knowledge booster. I was reading the annotations of Alekhine and the reason why Reti didn't go for the 3 move repetition is because, Alekhine understood the fact that Reti considered at that time himself to be the better player, and because of that Reti played for the win, but got punished.
Immanuel Lasker said that at 5:42 W should play e4. Reti is trying to play an extreme hyper-modern game, not advancing his center-pawns. But sometimes you must, if only to control the squares behind them
It's amazing to see games that where played 100 years ago and see many names that made chess the game it is today and whose opennings and variations are still being played in 2022, supported by these 3800 elo rated engines! That was indeed a magical era.
I always enjoyed this older games more on your channel, I understand them better and most often they are more spectacular. I love that you uploaded 2 back to back!!
Yes sir! More of these classic games where the players had to play OTB way more than today would be awesome! This tournament in itself especially with these players
Alekhine's like: Dude, I calculated 18 moves ahead to find a game winning fork with my bishop....theres no way this is going down in history as you offering and accepting a draw from repetition.
wow, did every player in this tournament have a famous line or opening named after them? Brilliant game too, I'd love to see more from this tournament when the Olympiad is finished
What a wonderful game. Really one of the greatest. With chess engines not being used and chess theory not far developed, I feel like chess games are much more surprising and spectacular than today. #Suggestion Please show more of this tournament, and maybe other tournaments between a bunch of players, which names represent openings - as these games are really enjoyable and educational aswell. It would be greatly apprechiated!
Nf3 is more generic than the Reti. It is sometimes refered as the Zukertort opening. The Reti is more Nf3 d5 c4, and my prof consider a double fianchetto as white as a Reti whatever black answer
The Reti in not the only opening with 1 Nf3. If it is followed by 2 b3, it is the Nimzovitch. I tried my own version of this once and got terribly thrashed, so I’ll never have an opening called after me.
That was amazing, a masterclass in calculting. I found parts of the continuation, depending on the position, but the whole sequence is just monstrous, what a game!
One of the finest games i have seen. The depth of calculations and the co-ordination of the pieces 10 moves down the line is breathtaking. Please cover more such games.

Honestly I think your channel would be vastly upgraded by more historical chess games like this. I love seeing older masterpieces played by people like Alehkine, Bronstien, and Spassky.
I would very much enjoy a full coverage on this tournament! And this is a good time as any to request an Alikhine saga. Been dreaming on it as sort of a continuation of Capablanca's saga. Please do consider it at some point and keep up with the wonderful work, Antonio!

Not fair to compare across era's who is 'better' at chess. If Alekhine had grown up with computers and such he could be on the same level as Magnus Carlsen, but we don't know for sure.
I saw this game about 25 years ago in a chess book. I was fascinated by the final +12-move combination and the bishop fork back then. About a year ago I remembered the game but couldnt find it because I didn’t remember Alekhine’s opponent. Thanks for sharing this. 🙂
Yes please show the Baden Baden tournament games Agad! Alekhine played beautifully and of course we all enjoy old chess games from the romantic period before computers. The games were much more fun so I always enjoy any old chess games.

Interestingly both of these players have openings named after them where the knight moves to the f file before the pawns.
