      When possible you should heal your units in your borders. Outside of your borders they heal +10 per turn, inside of your borders they heal +25 per turn. Also you cannot heal AND move in the same turn without a specific high level promotion. Also BUILD A MINE ON THE SILVER!

      Wrong, inside boarders of your own, they heal 20, 25 in cities

      Okay, if I am not completely wrong, here's some advice:
      You really, really, really have to get your cities growing as fast as possible.
      That was the case since the very first Civilization.
      So if you see something that gives you free food production in your city without wasting any of your pops - go for it.
      In this case it's the granary.
      That is the *absolutely very first thing* that has to be built in ANY city in ANY epoch since Civ I.
      It ensures that your city does not stagnate unless you settled in a totally unproductive spot.
      Remember: stagnation is baaad. Not as baaaaaaaad as starvation, but close.
      Next: roads are very very useful, even for a very early civ. It allows your units additional moves.
      Additional moves allow you faster access to the resources you need as your workers don't need that much time to get there.
      Additional resources means faster growth.
      Also, additional moves allow you to settle faster, at greater distances, and earlier than any other civ.
      Earlier settlements again mean more culture, more income, more everything, generally, than the rest of the civs.
      That more or less sums up my playstyle since Civ I.
      It never failed me, not even during the hardest settings of the earlier games.

    The day before Jon's first Civ V video, I watched someone get a scientific victory on turn 196, 1360AD, on Deity difficulty.
    Then I saw Jon play this for the first time.
    It's like watching Man Vs Wild in the same room as an arachnophobic throwing shoes at a spider on the wall, except the arachaphobe is a lot happier with their accomplisment.

    JON! 8 things you need to know:
    1: Technologies link together, look at the white lines in the tech tree.
    2: City states are only annoyed if you end a turn in their land.
    3: Units heal faster inside friendly territory.
    4: The farms are better near water, hence why it recommended farms on the hills.
    5: Units can be put into a multi-turn move. Really handy to cover known ground/friendly ground.
    6: Religion is strongest in the early game. Later it becomes meh.
    7: It was the jungle that made the food with the chocolate (although we all know chocolate is awesome)
    8: The pyramid was made by workers! Only citizens could get the honor to work with the pyramids goddamnit!!

    • @nonkh89
      @nonkh89 8 років тому

      6: _Religion is strongest in the early game. Later it becomes __-meh-_ the key to almost all victories. With _Tradition_ completed (which would've been my recom) you can faith-purchase engineers to power-build modern wonders.. ;)

    By the way Jon, this might be helpful later in this game, so remember this: Shift+Enter ends the turn immediately (it will start becoming very useful when you have a lot of units you don't want to move and the game always wants you to before making new turn).

      It really is. It actually came with a patch, it wasn't implemented in the base game. I was playing the game before that patch and had to mash Space to skip every single unit I didn't want to move before making a turn, which was pretty painful since I had a military nation and had a ton of units scattered all over the world.

      Everybody has their own playstyle. I always play small and tall so I try to max my food to get pops growing as fast as possible. I usually get more use out of farms on hill/river tiles than I do mines because I've usually got so many tiles being worked that all the incidental production adds up to more than I really need.

    Hey Jon, your units heal faster in your territory, additionally your units will only get your science advancements (such as embarking on water) once they have returned to your borders to collect the new technology.
    Secondly wonders are amazing, they cost no maintenance and they give a huge boost. Personally I feel you should have built Stonehenge while you had the chance to give you a decent early game boost.

  • @TheManiac201
    @TheManiac201 8 років тому +12

    Jon, I highly recommend focusing on science, a good rule of thumb is to have 100 science per turn by turn 100
    also get rid of some workers to save money, you don't need that many this early, keep 1 for jonopolis and 1-2 for athens

    Just a few tips: Units heal twice as fast if they're in your territory. It's fine if you annoy city states for the most part because Greece's benefit is that they forgive you pretty quickly, once you're friends or allies with them you can move through their territory without any negative effects. Shipping food or production doesn't actually reduce the food or production output in either city, it just appears.

  • @nickdziura7373
    @nickdziura7373 8 років тому +6

    Jon, NEVER EVER let your cities stagnate, if the cities aren't growing then you're setting yourself up to be super weak later in the game. Early on, your biggest focus has to be food, and build caravans to fix your economy

  • @konradkurze1067
    @konradkurze1067 8 років тому +3

    Some tips Jon:
    1) Upgrade tiles you are working first, you built two mines that you aren't even using while not upgrading the Silver resource you had active the whole time.
    2) Heal units inside your own territory. Units heal 10HP per turn outside your territory, 20HP inside, and 30HP in a city.
    3) Look ahead at researches. Keeping your research even through each tree is going to hold you back, look at something you really want to focus on.
    4) Farms on Hills near rivers are great, you want lots of food. More food = more pops = more resources.
    Other than that you are doing pretty well for you first recorded game.
    Some random infos:
    *) A city can work tiles up to 3 spaces away, so keeping that in mind when picking where to place cities is helpful.
    *) Cities on rivers can build extra buildings, cities on flat ground can build windmills eventually, cities on the coast can build several sea specific buildings. These are all things to keep in mind when picking where to build new cities.
    Looking forward to more!

    • @konradkurze1067
      @konradkurze1067 8 років тому

      Also the reason you are low on gold is you have too many workers. All units have an upkeep, you only really need # of Cities + 1 workers for early game, they will have nothing to do later, so overloading on workers isn't as useful.

      Speaking as a Greek, both Greece and what today is Macedonia consider great Alexander part of our cloture, the big difference is that great Alexander's Macedonia was Greek, while today's Macedonians are not Greek, they're Slavs. So technically speaking great Alexander is a logical Greek leader choice, it just depends to who you ask if that claim is gonna start an argument or not

    1. City states only get annoyed if you end a turn with a military unit in their territory.
    2. The reason the advisors recommended a farm on the hill is because it's next to a river which would have given it extra food with civil service.
    3. You decreased the food and increased the gold on your cocoa by chopping the jungle.
    4. You don't need a technology to see marble.
    5. You get experience just by damaging a unit but you can only get max 30 experience from barbarians.
    6. Bananas are not a luxury resource they are a bonus resource.
    7. Forests aren't useless. You can build lumber mills for extra production.
    PS. I'd recommend the R.E.D. modpack mod (steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=76153116). It makes the units look a lot nicer.

    Jon, you'd have actually been better off building a farm on that Hill. You would have kept the +2 production but gained the food bonus and, since the hill is on a river, it would have gained the +1 food fresh water adjacency bonus when you research Civil Service. Plus, that would have made the tile self-sustaining. Each population in your city need 2 food or they start dying until you reach stagnation. If you hardline one resource on a tile, that means you have to make up the food deficit from the population that's working that tile on a different tile.
    You really want to prioritize food more than anything else. More food means more populations, more populations means more tiles being worked, and more tiles being worked means more of all the other resources. Prioritizing food also gives you plenty of extra populations you can shove into specialist slots which give you very big bonuses to different resources and great person generation.

    Jon, the reason that it was recommending a farm instead of a mine is due to the fact that the game prioritizes food over production. Also, always heal units in your own territory when possible, as they will heal much faster (I believe x2) than outside the border.

  • @shadowingyou
    @shadowingyou 8 років тому +5

    Anyways, Jon. Pretty much all buildings have maintenance cost. Right after the Granary was built, you dipped into the negative. Then the Pyramid made the two workers. Balancing out your negative income early game is fine as long as you can plop it back up later. Basically, once you get caravans. I noticed that after getting caravans, I never cared about money. It was easy to obtain. Before caravans I needed to get commercial cities (building around multiple luxury resources or by anything that produces money.
    I'm not too sure about your faith position now, there might be a few good perks left but when everyone else starts getting Partheons, those perks may be gone by the time you hit it...
    For wanting to win culturally, you seem to avoid trying to gain culture (building monuments over everything else is ideal). Focus on culture if you really want that victory Jon. The faster you gain culture, the better game you'll be playing.
    The science is meh. I'm always behind in the tech tree but at a certain point, overtake the AI. Also, you could have gotten into the Classical era LONG time ago. You misunderstood how the tech tree works. Follow the lines. It literally shows you what tech is a prerequisite for another.
    Also, when healing units, keep them in ally territories and just heal them. They will heal in pretty much 4 turns full health. Much better time spent doing that than moving them around low health (in case you get caught off guard like the Scout did).
    Haha, it's like watching my mom first playing Civ V. She put into a good at least 500+ hours into the game now. After I taught her, she branded out since I couldn't play with her all the time and she adapted her own play style I guess. She likes being aggressive and war-like though.

    On workers, and units in general:
    Most regular units have some sort of "automated" feature. Workers can be set to automatically build and repair improvements in and around your cities, military units can be set to explore, et cetera. There are advantages to having your workers being automated. An automated worker will evaluate all hexes in a city's area. It will build the improvement on the hex that gives the greatest reward, based on your needs; food first, production second, gold third but moving up to first if there is a deficit in the budget and the people are not starving. If there are no improvements to be built, the worker will attempt to navigate to the nearest city needing improvements. If no improvements are detected the worker will, assuming you've invented the bloody wheel, start building roads. Automated workers will also automatically take shelter in the city when enemy units enter the territory, and then immediately return to work after the enemy has been dealt with.
    You can gift excess units to city-states for a small boost of your influence with them. It takes three turns to transfer the unit, during which it has no upkeep. You really have far too many workers for early game, two cities, and so little space. Consider gifting one or two of your new workers to Bucharest. They may respond with a gift of their own, gold or resources. You can also garrison units you do not currently need in a city, which will reduce their upkeep. Only one military unit may be garrisoned in a city at a time.

    I feel it's time for a little advice. Making your civilization more marvelous than marvelous.
    1. Greece doesn't get penalty when ending the turn in city states terrain (Greece special ability)
    2. Try to grow your cities more, food = science. The more food you produce the more science you will produce.
    3. Put all cities on production focus, this way when a city grows you get some extra production.
    4. Get a library in every city, so you can have a National college, increasing your science in one city by another 50%!
    5. Build a mine on the silver, fore more gold and happiness.
    6. Selling extra bonus resources (horses, iron etc) and luxuries will give a lot of gold, you can ask flat gold, if you made a declaration of friendship with them.
    7. A road cost 1 gold per tile, usually you connect a road if the city you gonna connect to your capital is equal in size or bigger than the amount of tiles needed. This way you will make money out of it as soon the connection is established.
    8. Use caravans or cargo ship to setup trade networks to make more money.
    9. You have a lot of workers, way more than you actually need (especially with the pyramids comming up). But it's a waste to get rid of them, just build more cities so they get worth for their money!
    10. City states only give you luxuries when your ally of them and Bucharest will give more culture once it's your ally as well.
    I enjoy the series, but some sub optimal decisions do make me cringe a lot!

    Use citizen management instead of telling your city to focus on something, it allows you to choose specifically which tiles to work, so you can get exactly what you want. Also units heal a lot faster in your borders.

    On territory and borders: "Grand Empires" (other player nations) have closed borders by default. Open borders can be earned through alliances or other forms of negotiation developed later. City-States have open borders by default, unless they are actively hostile (very negative influence) or at war. However, ending turn in their territory will be considered "trespassing" until you are allies, and will annoy them. There is one exception to this - if an enemy or barbarian unit is in City-State territory, you may enter the territory to engage in combat and you are given a free pass following each turn of combat.
    Black-dotted borders are always city states.

    Jon, you mentioned in the last episode that Elizabeth looked out of place in the 3000+ BC years in her Victorian garb, and the reason they did that was to make them appear as they are remembered in history; unlike in previous Civilizations where their appearance changed depending on the era they were in (In Civ 3, for example, Abraham Lincoln wore a horned skull cap in the ancient era and Elizabeth wore a business suit in the modern era.)

    1- You don't need roads for building caravans. So build a caravan, for the love of god.
    2- Bulid a silver mine. I know you thought you needed a quarry to do it, but in faact, you don't. Also, you already have the power to bud quarries, so there is no excuse.
    3- Most wonders can only exist in one place in the world, so if it will take a long time to build, don't do it, people might already be half done and finish before you do, wasting all the time you put into it.
    4-Players entering the classical era befor you is normal, it just means that instead of spreading out research, they focused on a particular branch of technologies and got to the classical era faster, while sacrificing other branches of research.
    5- I am really enjoying this series so far, good luck!

    You may have noticed this already, but units do heal faster while inside your borders and faster still while inside your cities.

  • @afeagzajeaff
    @afeagzajeaff 8 років тому

    Here are some explanations for your implied questions:
    -A pantheon has been founded means one of your opponents got enough faith to get a pantheon which gives a certain bonus. Everyone can get a pantheon, but not all civilizations can get a religion, which is why getting a shrine early is important if you want one (usually on high difficulties it's barely worth trying).
    -Your units only heal if they haven't moved/acted. They'll heal automatically if that's the case. Moving one tile then healing doesn't work, and the only difference between "rest until healed" and "don't do anything this turn" is that the game won't prompt you to use the unit until it's healed. If you never want to be asked to move the unit, just put it in "fortify" mode.
    -Don't hesitate to steal workers from city states early, there's no diplomatic penalty if they're not under protection, and you can make peace immediately which will make their relation return to "neutral".
    -The workers were right to want to build a farm on that hill, after some research, farms on rivers give 2 food and as a general rule, with some exceptions, food is worth more than anything else anyway.
    -If you're putting your workers in manually, put your cities in production focus. If your city grows, it will automatically reassign workers depending on your focus, but food doesn't do anything if your city already grew, while production will still get added to whatever building you're producing.

    Some tips for combat (I know you wanted to do a pacafist run, but if your Stellaris playthrough is anything to go by it wont end well. Plus, late game, the AI become utter dicks and focus you with a ton of hate.)
    -Vary your army: You should have a good mix of footsoldiers, cavalry, ranged units and seige units if you're taking cities. Having an army composed of ranged units will be good against oncoming soldiers, but will be slaughtered by cavalry heavy civs.
    -Unhappiness gives you a combat disadvantage or, if the enemy is unhappy, a combat advantage.
    -Similarly, if you are fighting a civ who is influential over you, you will be at a disadvantage.
    -Terrain matters: Rouge terrain can delay enemies but is also annoying to fight in as your units take more time to reach the frontline, whereas open terrain allows for fast movement. Ranged units can only fire in a one tile radius as the rough terrain blocks their view. However when stood on a hill, their range increases to its usual size. (E.g standing on a hill and shooting over a forest.)
    -Seige units deal heavy damage to cities, however are poor in combat against other units. They are easily rushed by cavalry so its best to keep some melee units around them to protect them. Any unit that gets a combat bonus against cavalry is usually a good call.
    -Cavalry have a disadvantage against cities, but are good for interception and distruption. Pillage roads in between cities to slow enemy troop movements and pillage luxuries to get their happiness down. Intercept any dangerous units that could attack your seige or ranged units.

    If you're aiming for rapid scientific advancement, it is IMPERATIVE that you keep some jungle tiles around - at the very least, the ones on hill tiles. Once education is researched and universities are built in a city, each jungle tile will grant +2 science each. This can be boosted to +3 science with a trading post tile improvement if the Sovereignty social policy is picked up in the Rationalism tree, once available.

    On Cities:
    The game will give you recommended locations for city placement, these are based on the amount of raw yield available. These are not necessarily always the best locations as sometimes placing yourself closer to resources which can be improved on will actually net a better start. Where you placed Jonopolis is a perfect example - good concentration of resources that need improvements, but lower than ideal raw yield to start off.
    Cities will continue to expand their influence and your national border more or less infinitely until you reach neutral culture gain or you've "conquered" the entire map. Influence will not develop beyond your available field of view, and influence is not equal to the actual working space of the city. A city can have a much larger circle of influence than workable area, so do not be afraid to place cities relatively closer early on. The game will not allow you to found a city within 4 hexes travel of another city. When two cities you control share a workable hex, only one city may work the the hex at a time. This can be swapped whenever you like from the city management screen of either city.
    You actually have a good location for a third city just North-East of Jonopolis, adjacent some Iron and some Fish. This will also give you a coastal city from which you can launch a Trireme to begin exploring the coast line of your continent. There are also several game-recommended city sites just West of Athens you may wish to consider.
    I would recommend, after dealing with the immediate barbarian threat and establishing trade with Bucharest, that you focus on establishing a third city.
