  • One-third of the US workforce earns wages that put them near the poverty line. Why is this cycle so hard to break? Two researchers who spent the last decade studying the issue joined me this week to discuss.

This episode was EXCELLENT. You made a great point about tax payers basically subsidizing Walmart’s workforce. Policy is key, but most constituents are against it, aka raising taxes. It’s a quandary: I’d be pissed if my taxes were raised 1.5% (like in OR). I live in DC and already pay what feels like an exorbitant amount of taxes for my level of salary (in a high cost of living area). However, I equally see the importance of government services for all, especially for children and struggling families. I am middle class, but the middle class has been hollowed out in the US for the last several decades. You can’t get blood from a stone! How about Walmart, and other corporations, pay their fair share of taxes, so we can subsidize their workers with their own damn money?! The answer lies there somewhere in the middle….
Thank you for bringing this issue to the forefront and giving it a platform!!!

Thanks for posting this. I wasn’t aware of how widespread this issue is. While i dont have kids, my sisters and i are caregivers for our mother. We supplement with paid caregivers, we pay the agency $36/hr. I suspect the caregivers get maybe half that.

Great video! Would be interesting to know the age distribution/demographic makeup of that 1/3 compared to the other 2/3. Also, you should look into the negative income tax as a means of addressing the benefits cliff.

You should read Poverty, By America by Matthew Desmond. He also wrote Evicted. Both very insightful books.

Wow I didn’t realize how far behind (USA I’m assuming) is behind where I live in Canada. Specifically in my city, we have more women in higher paying jobs (on the sunshine list making $100 000 or more) public sector (government or tax payer funded jobs in education, healthcare, legal or municipal) plus the private sector the wages are even higher. Women are pulling ahead fast around here. Hope the rest of the country and the USA catches up.
