  • Fear can be a real limiting factor, especially when you're fresh off an injury with no confidence. Mountain biking can be scary when you're unsure of your abilities! I only started walking on my own in February, and now I'm ready to hit the line we built last year. It's technical, challenging, and pretty high risk. Today I'll show you how I work through the mental challenges required to safely attempt these mountain bike features.

    Hey Seth, I just wanted to say that your videos have really helped me while I've been off the bike. Last year, the doctors found a bone tumor in my calcaneus (heel bone) which left me unable to walk. After getting it scraped out and filled in with bone graft I'm currently 6 weeks into a 9 month recovery.
    Thankfully, the pathology report came back as non-cancerous, and your video's have given me hope/motivation to never give up on my ultimate goal of getting back on the bike again. I've got a long road ahead and I've been rooting for you every step of the way! Thank you.

    • @katydid5088
      @katydid5088 2 роки тому +9

      Best wishes for your recovery. Less serious but kind of funny now, an uncle fell off a ladder pruning up the cherry trees. Shattered his heel, but was okay otherwise because he had a protective helmet and good shoes on (helped stabilize the shattered pieces of bone). Trouble was he was by himself on a long hill away from the access road. He dragged himself out and drove to the hospital. Did I mention his truck was a manual?
      The nurses called him Rambo when he came in. This was the days before cellphones. After that though, we set up walkie talkie protocols for everyone.

    Had my first big crash at Amelia Earhart Park about 7 years ago. Before that, I used to do 3 laps at Amelia and drive to VK and do 4 laps at least 4-5 times a week. Took 8 months to rehab and got back on the trails. Road Amelia at my race pace and made it past the turn, only to take a spill on the very next turn after. Took all my confidence away, didn't ride for years. I am now finally back to riding 4-5 times a week, but this time building up to it slowly. Doing on average 4 miles a day, trying to regain my confidence to attack features and build up my speed again. Glad I found your channel recently, as it's really helping me get back into the grind.

    I think this works for me, Seth.
    I just started to learn a bike length gap jumps and about 12inches bunny hopping. Went to some local trails and hit some gaps not too gnarly easy enough for a 42 y.o. To hit. One day my son invited me to the trails where gaps are a little longer and a bit higher lip.... long story short, after few cases i decided to level up a bit then crash twice. From then on i lost my confident. Watching this video would help me start over again. Thanks mate, appreciate you. Shout out to Kevin too. He trusted your skills.
    I cant upload some of my crash video clips here dont know how. But thanks mate. Hope you recover well and back on doing the things you always love and wanted to do. Cheers...

    Great video Kevin is a solid friend. I would say don't let your friends pressure you into stuff, but positive energy is contagious and helps build confidence. I was struggling with cats paw (at highland) friend said look you've got this, I've been watching you ride. So imma going to tow you in 3x, get the adrenaline out of your system, 4th time you lead me. We did that, and to this day I love that line more than any other. I just remember his energy and confidence he had in me to let me lead the tow once the my nerves settled out. So inspiring. Highly recommend that method of hitting the feature(s) at least 4x to get the adrenaline out and build confidence. But the key was he was positive the whole time.

Knowing when you've done enough for the day is important. Now I'm 45 and trying to re-learn things I could do on a bike but haven't in such a long time. Perfect capture of the emotions we have to when we push it. Also, agree that having friends pump you up in a group setting is generally a bad idea, but having a friend that knows your riding well and is level headed is good to bounce opinions off. There has been times that I knew I could do something, but I was stalling until a friend I trusted assured me I had it, then hitting it with ease. You gotta know your friends though.

    Back in the early spring I fell and broke a vertebrae in my lower spine, a compression fracture. I’m healed up and aside from the normal back issues of a middle aged dude I have zero confidence on my bike now. The weather is nice and my buddies are out riding and I’m contemplating selling my bike. I’ve been riding my gravel bike on trails instead and while that’s fun too, I miss the mountain biking. I am inspired by this Seth!

    ...more Kevin, please (together you guys are 1+1=3 overall video score goes up). Congrats, Kevin. Seth, mass props for grabbing that hardtail first - so many don't understand that is really the basis of riding...your bike handling is mastered on a hardtail, you can just go faster & ride longer (less fatigue) on a full-squishy. Another great video BPE, keep up the great work, Seth!

    Keep it up man, facing similar struggles here with my knee. Got a brand new Santa Cruz 5010 sitting in my room for 3 months now... I haven't ridden it ONCE yet, plus a new jetski I did only ride once. So hard to look at them
