You know your in good country when you can dig the post hole with a shovel. We dug out our single foot of topsoil and dug a couple more feet then just got the tractor to knock the posts in. I'm glad you have the strip fencing down at almost every post I have to stop and untangle the wire from the reel. Thanks for the video Andrew wish you a good calving Ben for Aus
came across your post by accident, but, found it very interesting, it's obviously a lot of hard work being a farmer ( which i now appreciate ) it's guys like you that are the backbone of our beautiful country, good luck with the fools running the country at the moment ( hopefully not for long )
Hey man, love your vids, been learning heaps, is there a chance you could follow up on this series when it comes around to it, spring, summer and autumn, I'm pretty new to the farm life and keen to learn, cheers mate
God I miss NZ... only found the channel.. what part are u in... I work in the waikato for 7 years for a contractor best time of my life.. love the videos.
I’m planning to visit New Zealand soon, and I would love the opportunity to learn from your farm while I’m there. I’d be happy to help out and gain some experience. I really appreciate your consideration!
Doing a good job of showing you don’t have to spend a heap of money on new machinery to make a living if you are prepared to work ie set a post the old fashion way.The only livestock we can keep outside where I live (Devon UK)like you do are sheep .Great videos
Awesome video as always my friend. Have you any idea how many miles you walk doing paddock breaks,I’d say a few miles a week. Are you looking forward to calving, you seem pretty laid back it seems to me to be a very stressful time, am I right or not. You made short work of digging that post hole out, cracking job by the way. Thanks for sharing mate.
Good question! But no I have no idea, wouldn’t be to bad, some of the bigger sheep and beef farms that I worked on, we did electric fences that were 1.2km long and that was 3 wire for sheep 😩 definitely don’t miss that 😂 I am and I’m not, it’s nice to have a bit of down time at the moment but I love seeing the next generation of calves coming through and what this years heifers milk like, it’s a pretty interesting time of the year
Great explanation of what you get up to Andrew and the drone shots showed off the different breaks really well.I think you said in an older video you don’t use a plate meter ,how do you decide how much to allocate on a daily basis Thanks
We buy it most of the time, I go through stages of drinking it out of the vat tho 👍 All our milk go’s to the factory to be turned into either butter, cream or milk powder mainly
@@TheOnceADayFarmer Ok thx. I can see your point there😂. Is there generally speaking (in NZ and especially on the North Island) a trend towards split or autumn calving due to the summer droughts (which will probably become more challenging in the future, I guess🤷🏻♂️?
How do you manage not to run out of grass? Are you allowed to spread fertiliser all year round? Here in Ireland we are restricted to just over six months of the year for fertiliser.
I should do a video on it to explain better, but basically the cows go on a really long round. There are restrictions around how much and when you can apply fertiliser.
Kia ora Sir, I'm May Ann a graduate of Animal Science from Philippines I really wanted to be a Dairy Farmer in New Zealand. I have relevant experience Sir, I hope you will consider me to be part of your growing Farm. Thank you so much.
@@TheOnceADayFarmer on our last farm through the winter we did a 120 day rotation but we were a lot high and colder. I think 80-90 is fine, you have plenty of maize to fill the gaps
The lawns come up nice around the house. The kids will love you for that in the years to come.
Yeah I’ll show it a bit more in a video, looking really good now 👍

I wish I had a post rammer, would make it way easier 😂
You might need to explain how great it is in the Waikato compared to how cold it is in the South Island, it's a different world down in South land.
Yeah true! I will say something next time 👍

Hey Andrew when you fence off breaks in a paddock how do you get on for water in each break
Sometimes they go with out, I wouldn’t go longer than 2 days with out water though, other wise I use portable troughs.

Each to there own I guess 👍

Hi, have you considered switching to split calving or autumn calving due to your summer droughts?
Not really, we don’t really have the infrastructure for winter milking and we don’t really want to milk through the winter 🥶

How much milk do you have to have in tank before pickup?what do you do with surplus?
About 500 litres which can be over two days. The surplus gets stored as calf milk

Do you guys feed hay or do you just give bigger areas per cow
Nah don’t feed any hay, although I do have some in the shed, so I might start feeding it to the calved mov maybe 🤷
What Is the white powder?
Magnesium oxide, cows need it other wise they can get milk fever

sir I can apply for farm from bangladesh
I like your videos but that music is bad, whats your average daily temperature in winter
Average would be around the 10-11 degrees Celsius 👍
The Once A Day Farmer i thought it must of been warmer , your grass comes back super quick
It has been pretty warm so probably averaged higher than that and the ground temp is still pretty warm which helps 👍
