Selena's sister Suzette (drummer) and father Abraham gave an interview to ET, I think in 2017, where she said this about her reaction seeing JLo made up as her sister: “She gave me chills when I saw her [for the first time],” Suzette told ET. “I was with him [her father] when she walked out. I literally, for a split second, thought it was my sister. I mean, the way she came out and when she came down the stairs, she kind of pushed down her dress the way that my sister would. She just looked amazing.”

@@ohsocrazy Honestly Abraham was kinda right to stop his series. Cause In my opinion Chris's book didn't really paint Selena in a great light. She came off as a brat, like a kid in a candy store and went for the things her daddy said no to just because he said no. She felt the need to prove him wrong. Not even because she truly wanted it (her eloping for example). You get a sense that once she got the forbidden man (Chris) she kinda lost interest but stuck it out cause she couldn't let her dad be right that they wouldn't make it as a couple.

I ran home, and my mom was on the couch watching it on TV. We sat together in shock 😢. We were huge fans. The scene when Selena went to Chris's hotel room telling him they should get married at that moment really happened. Her own father didn't know that's how the elope idea went about he thought it was Chris's idea the whole time but when he saw the scene being filmed he asked the director who told them this and he said "We spoke to Chris." It was one of the few stories Chris was willing to share at the time because losing Selena made him so protective of his memories of her and he didn't want to contribute as much to the story, but he did become friends with Jon Seda, who played him, and they are still friends to this day.

i’m armenian not mexican but the whole “too americanized for your own but too ethnic for white ppl” trope is very real for a lot of immigrants or first gens in america. growing up my parents wanted me to speak english w them at home so that they could learn too but i lost some of my fluency in armenian, esp since i spoke a diff dialect too, and people always say i speak it funny, and then having slight hiccups in english, people made fun of that. i never fit in with my own people in school or even where i live. funny enough more people assume i’m hispanic/latina than middle eastern! but there’s no way to actually equally be “good enough” for either side so the moral of the story is to just be yourself 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • @SubzeroBlack68
      @SubzeroBlack68 6 місяців тому +15

As someone who is of Mexican descent from Texas I know the feeling. My first language when growing up was Spanish. My parents said I was completely fluent, and they forced English in the house for several years to make sure I knew English fluently. By the time I was in second grade I forgot how to speak Spanish, I didn't even know that I ever spoke Spanish. But I can hear it and know exactly what is said but I am unable to speak it fluently. All my non Latino friends think I am fluent in Spanish because I speak English with an accent, and I did get made fun of for it. But usually it was just friendly jokes between friends. Then my extended family and older Mexicans come up to me speaking spanish thinking I know how to speak it but I barely know how to tell them I dont speak it. But that I can understand it and help them out in various stores. (usually they come up to me asking for english help in grocery stores or directions). But they always state how its a shame I can't speak my native language.
So its frustrating when you arent enough for either side. But I am also given the expectation to bridge the gap for the other sides. Coworkers be like, Theres a spanish only customer, can you speak to them. I be like. Ill do my best but Im not the Spanish speaker for the company.

J Lo only sang "Como la flor...", just those three words at the start of the Monterrey performance where she is trying to calm the crowd. Selena was a true performer, the likes of which the world hasn't seen since. Realize, the final Astrodome concert happened before auto tune and she sang, danced and interacted with the stadium's largest crowd ever for nearly a solid hour. No water breaks, no nothing, and barely broke a sweat.

maybe im the last person to notice this detail but when shes having the "dreaming of you" dream sequence and she gets startled by the rose on the stage. i just realized that the rose is WHITE. the color of roses that we use for funerals/to represent death. and just like the white rose interrupts her singing by coming out of nowhere, the ambulance scene interrupts her sequence by coming out of nowhere. i dont think i ever made the connection of why the rose is white and why it startles her so much. i guess i sort of always took it as the rose being thrown out of love like in the stereotypical roses on stage scenes. but no its not a rose of love, it's an omen of death.

No idea if it's been mentioned before, but in case it hasn't: Selena is an accepted spanish variant of Selene, greek personification of the moon. So, yeah, any person named "Selena" can be identified, simbolized or linked to the image of the moon. And yeah, she died before her 24th birthday; around half a month away (she was killed on March 31, 1995; she would have celebrated her birthday on April 16).
    "Yolanda Saldívar"
Through the years, Yolanda Saldivar has presented different versions/reasons behind the murder. In any case, she was senteced to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole after 30 years of imprisionment. This means she will be elegible around one year from now: march of 2025.

The family had a big hand in this film and when Jennifer comes out in the purple fit in the beginning, Selena's family cried because she looked so much like Selena. The father said something to the effect that it was like seeing his daughter again.

Selena was HUGE in Texas! I knew who she was even as a little kid. Her murder was massive and I mean MASSIVE news when it happened. When people found out that Jennifer Lopez, a Puerto Rican star, would be playing Selena, who was Mexican American, they were not happy. But Jennifer even stayed with Selena’s family to prepare for the role. She studied her movements, and the way she talked, etc. and when the movie came out, that was a huge deal as well, and she did a great job. She nailed it.

I grew up thinking she was mostly a Texas celebrity and then after I became an adult it seemed like she was everywhere. Now it feels weird that someone doesn’t know much about her.

Fact: The white rose was thrown at Selena onstage & she couldn't catch it. It was a dream she had over & over. She sees this as death is coming. BUT THAT WAS JUST FOR THE MOVIE. Her brother A.B. confirmed Selena never had this dream.

Fun fact. After watching the reaction I decided to look into how soon after her death they started working on the movie. It was only 6 months after her death. And it was because Abraham, her father, was fully aware of all the tabloids and knew a studio was going to make a film eventually with or without the families permission. He and the family decided it would be best if they stayed ahead of it so they can maintain control over Salena's public image. A smart move in my opinion. Initially the writer of the film didn't want to do it because he felt it was exploitation. But, after taking a walk on Venice beach, he encountered a couple of Selena's fans. He asked them why she was important to them. And their response was, "She looks like us." This changed his mind. He realized how important her story is for young Latina women. He said that at this time, there were ver few Latina role models or princesses on screen. He wanted to give them a princess they can look up to. I believe he did.

As a first generation Mexican-American, Selena was one of the biggest influence of my life. I am so glad you guys watched this movie, she is literally the artists in first and second gen community that best represents us. And your analysis of this as someone who hardly knew anything about her has been refreshing :) Thank you honestly. Also Yolanda get’s out next year and best know Mexican-Americans know how to fight and we gonna fight.

Watch “Why Do Fools Fall in Love” same director, a young Halle Berry, a young Vivica Fox. Based on a true story! Great Movie!

Selena was really humble for being such a huge star and she hadn’t even reached her true potential before she was taken away .

The restaurant scene was filmed a block over from where I was working at. I remember the while area was blocked off with trucks and tents, that was a real popular restaurant here in San Antonio called Karem's. Unfortunately it longer exists.

1:13:00 this happened on live tv, my family and I watched while my dad explained the situation. That woman took such a beautiful life away, but we have Selena's music to carry her spirit forward. Thx for your reaction, I enjoyed watching the movie with you two!

I cry every time I watch this movie. I actually didn't know about Selena until this movie but I learned who she was and bout her music after this movie. I'm always struck by how much she accomplished in 23 years. She was unstoppable and probably would have reached the stratosphere of Michael Jackson, or Whitney Houston.
Also this movie is so well made. Even if it wasn't about Selena, it tells a unique American experience of being 1st/2nd Generation children of immigrants.

I was a kid when this happened. I still remember the sadness at school. So many of the students were absolutely devastated. She was a beautiful person and talented artist.
