Slab City-RV Haven

If you’ve seen Nomadland then this story I did years might have some familiar characters. Slab City or The Slabs is a spontaneous community that arises in California’s Sonoran Desert every winter when the snowbirds arrive in their RV’s, campers, and vans to create an instant city that’s not really recognized as an official city. Like the communities depicted in the new movie Nomadland, most of the residents disappear again to more hospitable climates when the summer temperatures start to bake the desert near the Salton Sea. I first went to Slab City in 1988 driving my red Cadillac convertible for a series I was doing on the Today Show called, Flying the Coupe. Here’s that story.

As a resident of Slab City, CA in 2021, it is not the folksy way it is in here, more of a Wild West/Original Frontier of North America. Stake your claim, respect your neighbors or slab justice will make you respect your neighbors.
Be a good person, mind your own business and set your boundaries; you will be fine.
