- Saving an old speedboat from the scrap heap and turning it into an expedition vehicle to explore the wild waters of the UK and beyond.
It's time to strip it back and get the polisher out. This episode features a quick trip down the river Thames and through the Thames barrier before taking the rib into the workshop for a lot of cleaning, sanding and polishing.
The boat is an old 1977 Avon Searider SR4. It was given to me as it was knackered. I've already done quite a bit to get it running a bit more respectably but there's a lot more to do.
All music in this episode is by that incredible musical outfit, Burger Volcano. - Наука та технологія
listen up UA-cam this is exactly the kind of content I want you to recommend to me!
SAME HER DAM IT!
Wow 42 years old. Nice restoration man
Loved that old Diesel Rover, was quite sorry to see her "retirement".
me too... still miss it and find myself looking at less rusty secondhand ones online.
I thought the dog was driving the Land Rover- American.
I was literally about to type this lmao (in american)
Me too 🤣
Same
Living on the continent (germany), so did I. And the dog was doing an excellent job manovering that trailer.
Fantastic job on this. looking forward to seeing the end results :)
Well done and thanks for sharing.
Right from the very beginning the legend that is Chris is there.
keep up the good work
Nice work
2:10 the dogs driving!
I’m American. Gets me every time.
Amazing!
After a second of reading the comments I think viewers are more interested in the English Springer than the boat. =)
This is a brilliant series!
Looks good
Epic👌
2:12 I forgot that the driver's side in the UK is on the right 😂
Bruh, i like that yoo. Driving doggo (no)
Couldn’t load a boat like that in Australia. You’d be croc food in a heartbeat.🇦🇺
Just started the series, looks like a epic journey ahead.
amazing
As an American I thought the dog was in the driver seat
Music is awesome, straight out of "Stranger Things" era.
Loving this. Maybe strengthen that transom. Although the boat will be rated for 30hp or just above originally...they would have had a mich lighter 2 stroke in mind back then. The new 4 strokes can be nearly double the weight. Best of luck.
That's a good point. Perhaps I should add an extra layer. I've enlarged the outboard plate on the back of the transom so that should be spreading the load a bit more. But maybe an additional inner layer would be a good plan.
Harry Dwyer sounds like a plan to me. It’s a big cause if transoms failing these days. Not something you’ll be wanting to risk on an adventure, such as yours. Keep up the great work.
I've taken your advice, i've since been lying awake at night imagining the transom ripping off, and have reinforced it with more yogurt pots. It's now really solid so thanks for pointing it out. All covered in the next episode.
Harry Dwyer brilliant stuff. You’ve definitely done the right thing. It would have been a potential weak point and cause for worry, for sure. Well done.
anyone else american and had a da ja vu moment when the camera switched and it looked like the dog was driving then you remembered it was London xD
Great video but please let us know what you are using to do what. I would quite like to know what you used to get the dingy looking so good.
LOL I thought the dog was reversing the boat trailer into the water. I like my version better :)
Love the video. What did you use to clean and improve the state of the hypalon tubes as well as remove the lettering? After my exams I'm hoping to clean up our sea rider as the tubes are knackered and have old letters that have been painted over.
I need to know the same ?
Toluene is the usual chemical of choice, just make sure your ventilation is good.
Proper Speedboat
What a filthy river.
The shinier it is the faster it will go
Lol! I live in the US so it looked like the dog was driving the rover when they were loading the boat. Rover was driving the rover!
You live in "not the UK " because almost evry country in the world drives on right and sits on the left
@@Thefreakyfreek you obviously live where there is no sense of humor.
the barriers are to stopped the thames flooding London rather :D
Should fill the tubes with foam.
wmpiam why? Just so they can mine it out again in 50 years?
@@oducayen no way we survive another 50 years
OK, Soup Studios... found it... thanks...
I live in Belgium the steering wheel here is on the left I thought for a second or three that the dog was in front of the steering wheel driving😁
Great series Harry, what did you use you remove the painted letters from the tubes..Appreciate a reply as i'm having trouble removing a painted name from my sr4 .!!
I thought there would be more to patching a hole than just patching it😀
Hey Harry - I’ve got a SR4 too and took the outboard off to discover the same problem with the transom... what did you use to glue it up? Cheers, Dan
I used wood rot hardener and epoxy, but i've also over plated it with more yogurt pot material, coming up in the next episode!
So does that mean you get to store it on the mining boat?
Not sure what the plan for this boat is yet !!
Hi what colour paint did you use was it a good match? I'm currently doing the same as you with mine of a similar age but mine has a hole in the bottom 😂
the proper paint is international toplac rescue orange, im not sure what paint they used but judging by the white label on the paint tin its probably from a local paint mixer (gt600 orange 43800)
Chances are that transom wood is rotten all the way down. Just patching the top isn't going to do much good.
Yes I did worry about that. I drilled a large hole for the bilge and the plywood was actually pretty solid. I also end of covering it with some thick plastic. Finger crossed you're not right!
Can you tell me what the silver looking trinagle looking shape is about a third back from the bow visible at 7:23 is? I think it might be the back of the hook for when you hoist it onto the parent boat? Could you confirm, if it's not that what it is? Love the videos.
Hi Aidan, yes that is one of the four shackle plates for the four point lifting harness. The harness clips on to each point and up she goes...
Hi what did you use to clean the tubes . Was the hull just polished or painted ? Thanks
Scrubbed and scrubbed and then a bit more scrubbing.
I am thinking of doing something similar inside my garage. How dirty does it get (in terms of sanding and chemical vapors)? I know my wife will get angry but just want to know how bad mad she would get ....
you guys should pause at 3:28
Dude
Which chemicals did you use to clean the hypalon?
I have a question for you: How did you repair you rotten transom? I also have a avon searider with a rotten transom, i would liket to repair that transom. What kind of glue did you use? Is it epoxy based?
I used wood rot hardener and then epoxy, but that was only to stop the worst of it. It's still not as strong as it would have been originally. So i've used a larger outboard plate on the back and added more yogurt pot sheets on the inside. It's coming up in the next episode, and is really solid!
Whats the music about 40 seconds in?
How much horsepower does it have because I've been in a speed boat that has 340 horsepower
I miss Ben
How much is a secondhand rib like this?
That transom needs cutting out and a new one glassed in ... have a watch of this: ua-cam.com/video/y5laLatIWpY/v-deo.html
You don't want it snapping in half in a heavy sea and your engine disappearing off into the drink ;)
Does it still float when deflated?
Yes, the tubes on a RIB are entirely used for stability in rough conditions and turning, not floating
2:13 Oh shit a dog is driving! Oh wait its just UK and its backwards roads.
Well, we invented cars and roads and dogs and everything, YOU must change sides you cheeky colonialists!
What tugboat was that moored near your shop?
you need a bigger trailer and it will be easier to retrieve your boat with a bigger trailer
Any video off the Bigg ship

get your self some dimmer, its a cleaning product made for cleaning lorys, it does wonders on anything that is oily or greasy or just generaly dirty, you will be scrubbing ALOT less, just get some gloves because it is corrosive and it will dry out your hands
This would fail it's sea worthiness here. That transom is delaminating 6:00 , filling it with bodge is not a solution. It's delaminated because that is a stress point What a waste of effort for the sake of 1m of marine ply. I bet you buy camera gear costing 10 times that deeming it essential.
Amazing!
