Your channel came up on my feed and I have been watching your back catalogue to present videos. I would like to thank you for this off-road map tutorial. I had zero results trying to navigate Swindon borough councils website for information on any restrictions (so as to remain legal) till your advice about Definitive maps. When you showed the Ridgway on your video, that is spitting distance from my house. I have a vast knowledge of the off-road as we would say, but worried about being perseved as a wrong-un. Thank you again for making my life a bit easier. Love the channel and am here to stay.👍👍👍👍
Joined the TRF at the bike show after being shown the green road map. Living in the Ipswich area and ride around thetford and my local area with the help from this app.
What a great video, full of very useful information for us UK riders. You have won me over , I’m going to get my OS maps out and do some of my own tracks . Thanks
Thank you for this real informative guide to green laning. I’ve just started out in this journey and joined the TRF. I have to say their website isn’t the easiest to navigate or the Green map. I think I might have to invest in the OS Mapping as this looks to be so much clearer to plot routes. I’ve subscribed as I found you easy to understand and hope to gain further knowledge in the days ahead. Once again thanks 👍
I find planning routes on my Mac very easy, and getting the routes to my phone a doddle. I does take a bit of getting used to if you’re new to the whole thing, but I’m sure you be up and riding in no time 👍

You’ve gathered lots of really useful sources together in one place here …. many of which I’ve never heard of. I’ll definitely be using this as my ‘go to’ planning tool for the foreseeable future.
Wonderful UA-cam video, this is how they should be made. The amount of detail and information you mange to impart is stunning. Thanks to you I have discovered bridal trails right through parts of Bristol that I previously thought were just footpaths so now I can cycle them. Your advice re Ordnance survey app is a brilliant suggestion to those who have never used them before. Thank you.
Im now venturing into 'adventure' riding having sold my MT10 and about to place an order for a Norden 901 and my biggest fear so far has been how difficult it seems to plan legal routes. Ive watched a fair few videos and this I by far the most useful one so far. I will be taking your advice on the apps you use once I get the bike and will refer back to this for future use. Much appreciated. And there was some good ol Norfolk accent in there too! (Im just outside Norwich).
Being a member of the TRF and having access to the green road map makes it quite easy to plan routes, it's not the perfect solution but it works. I've just bought a Garmin Zumo XT and that is a right pain to plan and upload routes, certainly using Garmin's software, the OS map app is brilliant, very easy to use and has more uses than just biking. It only really works with Iphone tho, it's not as good on android, I bought an old iPhone 8 plus (first iPhone which is waterproof) to use on the bike and that has been the perfect solution thus far. Obviously riding with others is a good way to get around and find lanes or check new ones out, but it's nice to explore on your own sometimes, hope you've got enough info now to get out there - just message me if I can help with anything else. regards, Mike (from near Ipswich!)
That's a really fantastic guide! I'm already pretty familiar with OS maps, the app and the difficulties of knowing your rights on rights of way in the UK from riding mountainbikes, but seeing it applied to motorcycles is really interesting and useful. Thank you so much for all of the info and work you've put into this video. It's a great help! 😊👏
Good video for covering some of the basics. One small point about the green dots on UCR's ... all that means is that it is "Other route with Public Access" , a critical point for us green laners is that the "road" is maintained at public expense and these routes with green dots could be either public or private with or without motorised access, the list of streets or gazetteer for the county would be the only way to know for sure. I would just also say that the GRM is vetted by TRF rights of way officers for accuracy and that TW2 is in the main crowd sourced data inputted by members of the public (lots of errors and insufficient research). Ride safe.
I do state they aren’t covered on the definitive map and should check with local authorities for clarification, have also added a link to finfmystreet for further reading/research which generally states who owns it and who is responsible for it . Thanks
What a great vid thankyou for the information that's been so helpful to me as I am now getting in to greenlaning and adventure bike riding and live just down the road from you so recognising the maps and area is really helpful. Thanks again

I'll be going back to watch again just to clarify a few bits so I can get planning a few routes in North Wales... I used to using paper maps but want to be able to use my phone on route .... Really appreciate your time you've put into this video Thanks 👍
Watched 5 of your videos today great rides very informative and good fun I also agree with that there are no secret routes seen so many times people not sharing or even getting sh*tty with people for asking keep up the good work
Great video it will help me no end, I’ve just got a 701 to ride green lanes ect here in Suffolk ,this will be a great help .I’ve subscribed to the channel and joined TRF thank you 🏍👍👍
The green road map is just brilliant, not the perfect solution, but it saves a lot of hassle. I haven't been out with the TRF yet (Norfolk) but hoping to this Christmas
Be aware...definitive maps do not indicate TROs so a route can appear legal when it isn't. Equally, the trail riders map doesn't show all trails...I offered an update to our area map coordinator but the map wasn't amended.
It depends on the map and the council, some do show TROs and some don't, in the video it clearly shows them on the Wiltshire website, Suffolk shows them on the map but I generally call them for clarification, always been helpful. Ive yet to come across a lane that has a TRO but doesnt have a sign at the end of it, but I'm sure there are some out there which aren't displayed.
Great video, the only thing is, i dont want to use a phone i want to download the route to my tomtom. ive already plotted my route on my mac using OS maps but having difficulty trying to get it onto the tomtom.
I had a TomTom and it wasn't too bad to upload routes, it just didn't like the off-road sections and didn't have off-road mapping. My phone hasn't let me down yet, I have bought another iPhone just to use with my bike so it doesnt matter if the camera brakes on it.
Thanks for the top tips. I have some paper OS maps with the download code so I've added them to the app for offline planning. I'm in Dorset which doesn't seem to have any BOATs! I've seen some maps put online by some Green Laners, but they seem to be following "Recreational routes" in part. It's not clear if we're allowed on them or not?
Hey up, just started using the os map, when I have it running in my android phone, the phone keeps locking the screen, have you had this issue, if so what was your fix , thanks Simon B
I bought an android phone but it didn't work so well with the app so I bought a cheap Iphone 8 plus and that has been perfect. Defo better on iPhone, you can go into the setting and tell the display to never close so the screen is always running, not sure how it works on android.
Brilliant video, thanks for doing this. I am new to off road and it's great to see how you can make a route. So far I've joined the trf which makes sense but haven't used the osmap yet. I use my route app for doing routes on the road but after watching this I'm going to give osmap a go and see how I get on. Exporting hpx files to garmin shouldn't be a big deal. See you on the lanes in Essex I suppose. Aleks
Absolutely cracking video. I am new to doing the off road stuff and trying to find areas/lanes I can legally ride has been a bloody nightmare. You have opened the door to how to find and ride these routes. One question please, Class G Highways, can we ride them or not? Tried searching for an answer but its as clear as mud. Joined the TRF and already subscribed to OS as we do a lot of walking and I find OS to be brilliant. Cheers again and subscribed 👍🏻
Yes in short but it depends on the status, so does it have a TRO etc. My local council has a phone number you can call and they've always been very helpful, it's always nice to talk to a real person. This is one of the best things about the TRF, the Green Road Map makes it very easy to see what is and isn't legal, defo worth the sub. Thanks for the comments, appreciate it
@@twowheeledadventuresuk2739 Cheers, just watching you on your Trans Anglia trip. Just goes to show there are plenty of trails if you look hard enough. Forgot to say thanks for saving me over £500, decided to leave the Garmin and use my old iPhone 7 instead. Cracking result 😂👍🏻
nice job, I use OS 1:50 loaded garmin montana, and basecamp as a planning tool, but always looking to learn more and see how others achieve their plans. Good tutorial thanks for going to the trouble. Out of interest will the OS app allow multiple routes/other waypoints on the screen to join compare etc.
Not quite sure what you mean. You can upload gpx files from other devices, there’s a link in the description to the OS UA-cam tutorial on the desktop version and the app itself, that goes a bit more in-depth. I have basecamp because of my garmin on my push bike, but find it a twat to plot routes and the 1-50 just isn’t enough detail for me, and it’s expensive buying the maps with birdseye
Love the guide it’s really informative 👍 I’m just having a problem with the issue of the route not showing on my phone it just shows the start and finish waypoint not the line. Any help would be appreciated.
I live in NI and tried to buy the sub to the OS mapping and it won't put the sub through because it tells me [ Unfortunately, due to legal constraints, we cannot ship the product to the country you have chosen.] and the country I have chosen is UNITED KINGDOM lol... HOw are they "shipping" a product.. its ONline Maps FFS
Obviously an NI issue. Are there byways and green lanes in NI? I know there aren’t any in the RoI. So looking forward to racing in the IOM this year, they’ve got some amazing lanes over there.

I was walking on the North Downs in Kent yesterday, there is a northern and a southern byeway here, the northern byway has been hardened with aggregates while the southern byway is soft and currently a series of mud pits. There were not many motorcyclists about they tend to ride on the public footpaths around Bluebell Hill and they don't use number plates. There is bridleway connecting the northern and southern byways, at both ends the bridleway sign posts have been knocked down and hidden in the hedge. Two motor cyclists came along the southern byway and went straight up the bridleway to the northern byway. They had those unreadable 3 line number plates. Even where there are byways for motorcyclists to ride along they are still breaking down kissing gates, stiles, fence posts and sign posts in order to ride illegally. Your message here 2 years ago was wasted, the motorcyclists will not play the game!
They aren't really motorcyclists, they are just scrotes. You get bad people in all corners of society, even walkers do lots of damage in winter when they stray off the footpath to avoid puddles and damage the surrounding areas. But if the majority remain responsible the human race might just make it. For now.
@@twowheeledadventuresuk2739 I didn't know you were in my area on Saturday, I was walking on Sunday and saw your tyre tracks on the section between the tunnel and Shell Garage on Bluebell Hill and Lower Warren Road where the horse field is. This section is marked on the OS Explorer map as Byway, on Lower Warren Road it is signposted as Byway, but at the Shell garage it is signposted as a Bridleway. This is a bit weird so I'll have to let you off. The Byeway between the Shell Garage and Boxley has been permanently closed to motor vehicles, motorcyclists were cutting a deep groove in the chalk and making this ancient trackway difficult and dangerous for other users. Just behind the Shell Garage is the White Horse Stone a neolithic monument representing the centre and origins of Kent. The Byeway you took from the Shell Garage and the Byeway from the end of Lower Warren Road rarely get used by motorcyclists, occasional 4 wheel drivers like the challenge of that hill. Did you like the new bridge over the Medway North of Snodand? I take it you rode along the hardened section of the Pilgrims Way between Hollingourne and Harrietsham that I referred to in my previous post. You seem to like riding ancient trackways that have become long distance footpaths, the Byway sections are open to all traffic so you do not have a greater right of way than anyone else and your readers need to be aware that they cannot expect walkers to cling to fences and trees while they blast past (there are car drivers that do this on minor roads too). I hope you enjoyed your journey through Kent, you should have booked a chalet at Camber Sands on the Kent/Sussex border and gone to the beach, I saw you going past on the video.
@@richardpeel6056 something like 95% percent of the public rights of way network isn't open to motorised vehicles, so I always get a little disappointed when people try to tell those, that by law have a right to do, are somehow spoiling it for others whilst doing what they wish to do and that the taxes they pay pays for the repairs to the byways and unclassified roads that they use. I wish people wouldn't be so selfish and realise we have to share this tiny planet with others and sometimes the others wish to do something different and walkers already have the vast majority of the network all to themselves. I have a dog, I walk miles along public footpaths with him, see lots of evidence of other users on those paths because of their footprints and the dog mess they all leave and litter. Perhaps you should visit Kent CCs website and have a look at their definitive map which clearly shows which lanes in Kent are in fact byways open to all traffic and which are restricted, it makes it very easy to distinguish between right and wrong: webapps.kent.gov.uk/countrysideaccesscams/standardmap.aspx

Dose this app still available?
The OS map app is available, still use it on every ride and it's still awesome!
Excellent video, thanks very much
