- Idler pulley tensioner bolt: 16mm
Rotate clockwise
Mounting bolts: T45
My replacement belt was a Continental 6K1130 but yours may vary depending on your vehicle’s package (SE, Sport, R, etc). Mine is the 2017 GTI SE.
Safest bet is to check the numbers on your OE belt.
Belt and tensioner both purchased from Rockauto.com

Thank you - great video very informative.
Do you think a bad idler pully/belt could be making a squeaking sound when going over bumps and sometimes when stopped
Usually they are loudest when starting up cold and then quiet down when the engine warms up. If bad enough they squeak all the time. But it is possible. You should be able to open the hood and listen to it squeaking. To be sure you would want to remove the belt and spin the pulley and listen closely without the engine noise.
@@mistahcatah I’ve never been able to hear it with the hood open because by the time I get out of the car and open the hood the noise stops. The weird thing js i’ve only heard the squeaking/chirping noise when the engine is warmed up. So I guess it isn’t the belt
@@wendysremix Probably not, but it is still possible. Only way to rule it out is to listen to the pulley with no other noise.
Did you end up finding out what the squeak was? I have 58,000 miles on mine and it’s making the same noise + rattle when decreasing RPMs around 1300 RPMs.
@@tannerbrunetti5270 yes somehow the exhaust came out of the hangers in the middle of car and was just hanging there. I doubt thats whats happening with you though
does your car make a squeak like sound during start up? It happens on mine ever since I replace my belt with 1130 from the oe 1132 length belt. Not as bad when I replaced it with continental 1130 belt from bando. Sounds like its bearings 😊from the belt being too tight during start up.
Usually a squeak is from the belt slipping from being too loose. But it could be the pulley bearing which is why I recommend changing the pulley at the same time as the belt
@@mistahcatah I changed the belt and went from 1130 to 1100 and to noise stop. Turns out the belt is too loose. I changed my belt on my MK8 GTI and the aftermarket belts (right now) sucks and are not accurate in terms of fitment. The first one I bought was 1133 and didn't fit (way too loose), 1130 fit but squeals at start up.
Thank God it's not the bearings since it is going to be an expensive replacement once the alternator and ac compressor bearings wear out due to the belt.
Is using the different part number belt you used fine? Or does it need to be exactly the same part number
If it is a different brand the numbers may cross reference. If it is a different size it would not work
@@mistahcatah ok thanks I have just ordered a belt for my ea888 gen3 too just couldn’t find the exact same belt 6PK1132 so ordered a 6PK1130 like you used in the video is this fine? Has the same VW part number so guessing it’ll work
do blown pulleys moan at idle? How much is a pad and rotor replacement today, i'm a new used GTI owner
Yes a bad pulley would make noise. If left unfixed it will seize and then the belt will squeal and burn. Not sure about pads and rotors. Worth a google search
@@mistahcatah Thanks bud
Did you go with oem or the 49$ one? How’s it holding up?
I was about to make a video of it myself due to there not being any. GG the 1.8 and 2.0 are similar?
Not sure. Probably fairly similar
i have a question Idler pulley should replace every 120k km? im half ear forgive me if i don't understand*
I replaced the belt and pulley at 100k miles (160k km). 120k km I think is unnecessarily early for most people.
@@mistahcatah thx sir
