I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.
I have to say…I’m aware this video is a year old, I’m working my way back as I wasn’t a subscriber until somewhat recently…The 11:15 mark almost brought me to tears because I was backlashing on one of my BC set ups like crazy and my knot was causing it…this made me feel better about my ability (and that particular reel!). Thanks Tyler, your videos seriously are helping me get better
Tyler, just last week I was going back through your older vids looking for spooling tips and explanations…impeccable timing for dropping this, as I have to respool my spinning rod and my new baitcasting. Love the channel man! Keep rocking out the incredible content sir.
all the videos I've watched I've never seen what your showing here I didn't know about this I've got 3 reals with no string I am going to try your rigging tomorrow thank you Tyler this is the most helpfull video I have watched so far
The first time I ever used braid on a spinning reel, it wasn't "braid ready" and I didn't use backing. It went on tight and I figured I was all good as far as tension. I was not. My third trip using that combo throwing a ned rig, set the hook and it had enough for that, but I had zero drag until the fish ran about 40 yards and finally pulled my braid tight enough around my spool and I was able to land it. I learned my lesson about using either backing or electrical tape to make sure my braid doesn't slip on the spool again.
Just bought a lake house, and getting back into fishing after 15 years. Ur videos have helped me remember how to use my baitcaster properly. Only thing is my golf game is hurting since I’ve started fishing.
There are some great videos by the Salt Strong guys for spinning rods with backing. They recommend and I always use a pencil through the center hole of the line spool to avoid the’toe burn’ and a wetted paper towel to hold the tension on the line so my fingers don’t burn.
Getting to the point in fishing again where im feeling comfortable/knowledgeable enough to start paying attention to line. Awesome video at the right time! You answered questions I didn't even know I had. 🎉
Do you reccomend doing braid to flouro on an all around baitcaster like in your 1 pond rod video? Or just straight flouro? Or is it mostly situation based?@@TylersReelFishing
I’m gonna say what everyone else is thinking….you have nice legs, Tyler. 🤣 Seriously though, you have one of the best UA-cam Channels out there. All of your videos are very informative and loaded with tips and tricks. Keep’em coming, Brother! 👍👍
Hey Tyler. I really like the idea of using my old monofilament as a backing line to save money but does it have to be a thin and light lb mono? I have a zebco Cajun 14lb mono and I think it’s better to use a cheap mono that’s thicker because it takes less to fill it and like you said it should never be seen or used.
Hey Tyler, do you ever have plans on going out to the Kentucky lake and do a video there? You’re tips have helped me catch fish but I can’t seem to catch very many in a day.
Can you do a fishing video in lake laneir and show me how to adapt to new lakes or just fish them more effectively than now because I’m on a high school team and really want to go pro
Backing with 50-65lb braid is better. Its lighter and allows for further casts then mono backing. Alot of pros use braid. Alot of pros also use mono but the pros who use braid i follow more. Try it let me know what you think. I noticed an improvement myself. I used to use mono too.
Problem with braid that size, is the connection knot. Too big of a knot and it can start working its way out of the middle of the spool, causing backlashes
Hey Tyler, love the channel. Can you do a review of the Elite TI baitcaster? I have two Hypermags, a Pro TI, Custom Pro and KVD reels. I'm thinking about the Elite TI for black Friday but it's so hard to get info on it. Thanks!!
No, as long as the mono backing still looks like it’s packed in tight, I’ll just tie it off to keep pressure on, and then put new braid (hint, you can just flip the braid and spool it on the other direction to get more use out of it)
Hey Tyler I am starting a fishing club this year and I will be managing it most of the time. I was wondering what your suggestion would be for managing the money we receive from local sponsors. Thank you
No, for backing that doesn’t matter. And if your main line is out enough on the cast, you put too much backing. And if you put the right amount, and you are still out on the cast, you need to put more line on.
@@TylersReelFishingokay so by my understanding tyler, let’s say i reeled with mono backing to fluro. now recently im loosing out on main line it’s getting low, do i reline only the fluro part or despool all of it and use mono to start again.
Don’t listen to your local bait shop guy. Light mono as a small backing will be best. Sets a strong base for your braid to sit on and not be able to dig into
Hey Tyler, how worried about line size to reel should I be? I have a Curado dc reel and it only fits about 110 yards of 14 lb mono line. I would like to use 20lb or if needed 17lb of the invizX fluro line from Seaguar but I believe only 70 yards of line would fit. is this plenty? I fish mostly from the bank as I do not have a boat yet.
That works great! Not everyone watching this video though will be spooling near their tackle bag, if they even have a tackle bag (ie boat and kayak anglers). I spool in my house all the time sitting on the couch! Toes work great for everyone everywhere
The most helpful fishing UA-camr, thank you so much for making this video it helped so much 😃

Holy heck bud, thank you very much. You're the first person to ever show how to tie on or how at least you tie on to the spool
Glad to help!

I appreciate that!

You wont find another youtuber really talking about backing and what its for. I struggled to understand that for the longest
I try to cover anything and everything other content creators miss!
I’ve been putting a bed on my reels since tournament fishing in the 80’s😎
I hold my spools with my toes too lol. First time my girlfriend saw me do this she laughed hysterically but it has always worked out just find for me!
Going to be getting a baitcaster really soon, definitely needed thia video!
Right on! Shop for one using the links in my video descriptions if you can remember! Doing that always helps me out a ton with affiliate revenue

Never had thought about the knot placement from backing to main line before. Thanks Tyler!
Of course!

Could you do a video on what 2 fishing rods you would use to through every pond fishing technique please .
Got a version of that coming soon
Thank you

Perfect!
Great info 👍.
Thanks for watching!
Find a friend...give him a pencil
Or a wife! She will love it!😂
Yep. My son. Pencil or screwdriver. Done.
Very helpful video. I have 8 lbs of monofilament for a backer. Is that a bad size to go for, or is it fine for a backer?
Tyler, please explain why you center the backing to main line knot on the spool?
I guess I might not have been clear enough. You want to do that so the line can’t pile up on the sides
@@TylersReelFishing Thanks!

I will do a rod & reel arsenal video later this year talking about what I used most

I potentially will do one in the next few weeks
So if going to put 50lb braid on my dedicated frog baitcaster what weight mono should I use for backing?
6
Thanks for the video!! Question…when time to put new braid on do you replace the mono too or use it for more than 1 braid use??
No, as long as the mono backing still looks like it’s packed in tight, I’ll just tie it off to keep pressure on, and then put new braid (hint, you can just flip the braid and spool it on the other direction to get more use out of it)

@@TylersReelFishing Do you have a tackle warehouse discount code?
@TylersReelFishing would 8lb mono backing be fine as well to use? or do you suggest sticking with 6lb
8 is definitely fine

Just a savings account, and only use it for expenses that are wise
Hey Tyler, have you ever tried Stanford tackles “boom boom” frog? Saw one and super interested any thoughts?
Not a frog worth your time, trust me
@@TylersReelFishing then I’m gonna order the poopin pad perch 🫣🙏🎣
I got a question is it okay if I tightens the tension all the way to spool up my baitcaster
Yes
@ because I tried to go fishing yesterday and the line was biting down on it self and didn’t want to throw properly and it bordered
Bird nested so I had to redo the whole thing because it wasn’t much
i have a question, when you choose bscking does the reel or rod specs for line matter? or does pound test not matter as it’s not used
also what happens when ur main line is out of line enough for a cast
No, for backing that doesn’t matter. And if your main line is out enough on the cast, you put too much backing. And if you put the right amount, and you are still out on the cast, you need to put more line on.

What type of backing line did you use on the baitcaster?
Cheap 6lb mono
Do i have to use a backing when it comes to braid
I explained it in this video. Yes, to save money on expensive line, and to serve as a solid backing the line can’t dig into
So my Bait caster is only 150yards and all my bait shops says to only put braid with no backing..is that right??
Don’t listen to your local bait shop guy. Light mono as a small backing will be best. Sets a strong base for your braid to sit on and not be able to dig into
@ ok I’m looking to do 6lb Mono first then 20lb Braid
Where’s the link to buy!!?
In the video description!

Yes that’s plenty. It’s not until you get to the Shallow Spool reels that 20lb doesn’t get you enough
Am I the only one that takes old braid on one reel and spool it onto another spool to flip the line/use the line that was buried at the bottom?
Nope! I totally forgot to mention that
This is great but I feel like u rushed a bit thru it
bro.... all you gotta do is zip the whole roll up the side pocket of your tackle bag. then you dont have to hold it at all.
