Note: My intension with this channel is to provide "movie" length paddling features in 4k to be ideally screened on a big screen TV. I believe the content may not be suitable for viewing on a mobile device - you just won't experience the "epic-ness" 🤣
**SKIP TO 19:00 IF YOU JUST WANT THE SICK DOWNWIND SLEIGHS!**
    Back to the story....
01 August 2021 - strongest wind I've paddled in, fastest 1km split I've ever paddled, and apparently there was a helicopter rescue as well?!😎
Firstly my apologies getting this live!
(major M1 RAM issues on a new MacBook Pro - not impressed @Apple 😡)
Initially I had the need to let things cool down a little after the social media keyboard warriors got a hold of our story and felt the need to express their lack of knowledge in a intense sort of way! It was crazy! The Cockburn Sea Rescue FB post went viral, news outlets were hunting down the paddlers for comment - so we went underground!😬
But overall, it wasn't that bad!
    Let me explain....
Yes, there was a strong wind warning issued, yes the conditions were extreme, yes it was cold, yes we had all the safety gear and yes it WAS THE MOST FUN I've ever had in the bumps - EVA!
But we also had an unfortunate accident - one of the crew took a swim and snapped an iakos.
Short version - he was found by on of the other guys after our regroup post exiting the bridge, , rafted up, and activated his PLB (epirb) and was airlifted by Rescue 65 and taken to safety - no injuries, all be it a heavily bruised ego.
Cockburn Marine Volunteer Rescue arrived after the airlift and decided to hunt down the canoe (thank you 🙏🏼) and then "escort" the last paddler back to the finish area - I'll say "escort" as that's what they wrote in their post, however it was another very experienced paddler who from all accounts, said they couldn't keep up with him chasing the bumps 😆
So yes there was a very unfortunate accident in very extreme conditions - but OMG! was it fun 🤙🏼
Please don't get me wrong, I'm not downplaying the incident, it could have easily gone very wrong very quickly - but like everything we must reflect; all have taken away, as individuals, key lessons learned after this and are extremely thankful to the rescue teams involved. 🙏🏼
    Bring on summer🤙🏼

Mahalo from Hawaii! It's cool to see an Australian on an OC1. We mostly get surf ski paddlers from Down Under. Excellent run & video!

Those splits! Epic! A good tale on the importance of being prepared, stuff (insert other word) happens. Being prepared ensures the best chance of a good outcome as the crew did here. Mother Nature is all and powerful and must always be respected, again as the crew did on this day.

Love it! One of the best downwind videos I have seen. Thanks for taking the time and making the effort to film and narrate and edit. As a beginner it would be more instructive if the downwind footage was played in real time so I could get a feel for your paddle rate and boat speed, it seems like you slow some of the scenes down which does add to the drama but for me decreases the usefullness.

FAAAAARRRRRRRKKKKK! Only a couple of times did the smile disappear...only to return pretty bloody quickly! Were you aware of the others and where they were? Did you know about the rescue while you were paddling, or afterwards? You're a brave (or crazy) man!!

    • @PaddleLifeWesternAustralia

I had no idea of the rescue when paddling - I was well finished. I did now we had a issue with a possible paddler struggling - had word from @foil_perth when he came through - that's why I made the call to go ahead and get to the car in the chance I need to pick someone up from another beach somewhere.

It looks like you were leaning to the left most of the time. In retrospect would you set up the boat differently for more stability?

Hi, I note you used to paddle skis but now look like more focused on outriggers. I'm wondering if you can give a bit of an experienced comparison between the two. I'm nearly 60 and currently competently paddle skis (Stellar SR), mostly flat water and some ocean when conditions are light (no downwinders yet) but there is no ski community where I live. I'm thinking of moving to outriggers as there is a small club nearby. Thanks

Its all about the vibe 🤙🏼😆 Over the years injury has forced me to make changes to my activities - OC is just way cool!!

Here in Hawaii, if you paddle '6-Man' outrigger canoes (club paddling), paddlers tend toward OC1 (1-man outrigger canoes) as the stroke is the same for 6-man outrigger canoes. I hope this helps you.

Yah, epic paddle for sure. Crazy conditions! I just got an OC1 and can't wait for days like that. I have surfed my whole life so I know the ocean well. I saw you lean all the way almost to the ama, nuts! Why don't you use the head strap for the Gopro? And, do you use any kind of water repellent for the lens?

    • @PaddleLifeWesternAustralia
      @PaddleLifeWesternAustralia  3 роки тому +1

Hey Karlos, thanks for watching! GoPro - head strap - always tends to bounce around too much for my liking, and I usually wear a cap which can make the angle tricky. Ive tried several formulas to try keep the lens clear - and good old licking the lens seems to be the easiest and best solution I've found!
