    Great vid. Smashed my ares on a downwinder and need to replace, considering a Volare... no questions both are good in the surf, but which is better in the flat? or a better all rounder? many thanks

    Awesomeness! I surf OC1's quite a bit here in Hawai'i. When facing down a larger wave that I still believe I can crash through on the way out, I take me feet out of the footwells and straddle the cockpit. I have made it through some substantial energy that way. I know this is vid is about 3 years old, but it's good tip for those first starting out surfing in the zone with an OC1.

    Yes a pine needle stuck on the ruder is very noticeable at times only when you get back to the beach and remove it it’s like removing a splinter , I have considered glueing a fine needle at 45° in front the writer to help deflect the needles and minimise the gap between the deck and the writer as tight as possible

  • @Tobin8r22

    As a bigger paddler (6’5” 230 lbs) I love my Volare, but drainage is a huge problem. Fills up fast but takes forever to clear. I’ve got the pedals all the way forward and wondered if that was slowing down the drainage? But as mentioned I’m tall and really need the legroom. Paddling in Canada I need to use neoprene socks or booties during shoulder seasons as my feet are sitting in water most of the time. I have one of the original Volares from a couple years ago but noticed a newer one from 2022 had a diff system on it with a carbon fibre cap… is that the same solution you went with?

    GREAT job. I have both Ares Pro and Volare Pro. LOVE them both. I live on Kauai and get to paddle big conditions a lot. The ares slides through and bombs down faster. The Volare is shorter with longer rudder and helps me carve the swell and shoot the troughs better. The ares is faster the Volare is more fun. Only problem with Volare is that it doesn't drain as well as the ares. Would really like to know how you changed the drain

    Really appreciate you voicing your self. I can relate and I suffer ptsd and depression. I was just talking to a fellow paddler about your UA-cam and how you inspired me to get off of my ass and start paddling. So first off just wanted to say thank you for putting your downwinders out there because you inspire. I left downhill mountain biking after injuring myself. Maybe it’s time to help other paddlers. Servitude has its awards because it takes us out of our selves. I really feel your story and I’m sending you Aloha and healing. Other salts I'm not sure. I'm not sure anti-caking chemicals or iodine but I'm finally able to sleep cramp free and especially paddle cramp free. The salty water is healing...

    Thanks for sharing about your tough times and the current journey you are on. It's not easy, from PTSD to compassion fatigue to just being caught up in the frontline madness we get to witness every day. I wish I paddled for fitness, but its more about escaping, digesting, processing, and trying to get some form of understanding out of it all so that I take home the best of me to my family, which is very hard at times when you are frontline and witness an environment that seems never-ending. Chasing new sensations to bury the older feelings and eventually they all come to the surface. Vunrulbility is the answer to a healthier path, being able to verbalize what's going on and forgetting about how other people might judge you. Long path with small steps. Like a good DW bro, it's all about navigating the best line to a longer ride and forgetting about those short fixes in the bottomless trough.

    Love it! One of the best downwind videos I have seen. Thanks for taking the time and making the effort to film and narrate and edit. As a beginner it would be more instructive if the downwind footage was played in real time so I could get a feel for your paddle rate and boat speed, it seems like you slow some of the scenes down which does add to the drama but for me decreases the usefullness.

    Awesome video! How does the Gemini respond in downwind conditions when the heavier paddler is sitting seat 2? I am trying to plan how I will approach taking less experienced paddlers out on my Gemini to downwind. Ideally, I’d like them in seat 1 for the experience, the view, and so I can coach them along and follow their pacing. I’ve heard that the heavier and stronger paddler should be up front in the Gemini. It obviously worked out for you the other way around! Any insight as to seating arrangement given paddle experience and weight distribution for this canoe? Thanks in advance! Cheers Edit** FYI I am about 200 lbs and lean, so I’d expect to be stroker 95% of the time just merely following the rules of “heavier/stronger up front”..

    • @PaddleLifeWesternAustralia
      @PaddleLifeWesternAustralia 2 роки тому

      I think if the conditions are big enough then its not an issue. Usually when I paddle with my sidekick Stimo I'm in the front - although we have done 1 or 2 with me in seat 2 also! For control and taking out novices seat 2 is where you want to be - you can then coach them into taking strokes and teach them how to look form the right bumps. You will find having a lightweight paddler in 1, on small and flatter days, some slight nose lift and a bit harder to get the canoe going - but the experience for them at the front really negates this issue. Overall its a very well balanced canoe and loves the bumps!

    Hi, I note you used to paddle skis but now look like more focused on outriggers. I'm wondering if you can give a bit of an experienced comparison between the two. I'm nearly 60 and currently competently paddle skis (Stellar SR), mostly flat water and some ocean when conditions are light (no downwinders yet) but there is no ski community where I live. I'm thinking of moving to outriggers as there is a small club nearby. Thanks

      Here in Hawaii, if you paddle '6-Man' outrigger canoes (club paddling), paddlers tend toward OC1 (1-man outrigger canoes) as the stroke is the same for 6-man outrigger canoes. I hope this helps you.

    UPDATE: I have now been made aware that Puakea has added bullets to the new Volare canoes coming out of the Ozone factory - I haven't seen one in the flesh as yet so hoping this information is true! All that work must have made a difference! For those interested in doing a modification - I used the bullet kit from Stellar Kayaks stellarkayaksusa.com/store/venturi-bullet-completed-set.html WOW! Stoked to see this vid has had the impact that it has - My intention was to only share my personal dilemma on owning 2 of the fastest downwind canoes on the market...and to show the differences in design. good info. Do i have to cut off my existing drain to add on the venturi bullet?

    • @robpainting2809
      @robpainting2809 2 роки тому

      @@subliminallyinc I used a Dremel and cutting disc to remove mine. The Stellar bullet kit is quite a bit bigger than the venturi fitted on the Volare, so it fills and empties quite quickly. Make sure to install it like in the video - with the front edge of the bullet just inside the cowling. Maybe a quarter to half cup of water in the footwell at normal paddling speeds and makes a lot of gurgling noises as it sucks dry in even small, slow-moving, bumps.
