One of the best scenes of the series was when Apollo’s trainer/manager Duke told him, “He’s all wrong for us, baby. I saw you beat that man like I never saw no man get beat before, and the man...kept...coming AFTER you. Now, we don’t need no man like that in our lives.”
One of the most emotional scenes is in Rocky ll, when Rocky goes to Micks place to ask him to train him again and Mick slaps him in the face. Mick tells him 'You didn't even see that coming and that was from an old broken down pug like me..what do u think the champ would do to you?" I cry for real every time i see that scene.
I was too young to see these films on theaters but the greatest theatrical experience of my life (and I go to the movie theaters a lot) was when the Alamo Drafthouse did an all day Rocky marathon. Everyone cheered and applauded at least 4 times throughout the course of the films. Everyone laughed at all the right parts. It really was like seeing these classic films when they were originally released.
When i go jogging and the Gonna fly now song comes up ( along with the War and the Training montage songs from other Rocky Movies ) I can make a few more kilometers :D
I've watched every essay about Rocky on UA-cam and this is the first one to say that that was the great Roberto Duran doing the sparring... also i had never heard that episode about Chuck Wepner in prison. Well done!
I wish Creed had gotten more time in 2. I love that scene where he's reading the hate mail and they should have explored his prude more. Shame how he was written off in IV.
Rocky 2 may still be relatively grounded in reality like the first film, but I feel it's already planting the seeds of cheese that we'll see in subsequent sequels. That being said, Rocky 4 is not only my favorite in the franchise but my favorite movie ever.
The first one is about self-respect . . . how important it is to have it, and how important it is to get it back once you've lost it. Very simple, and very powerful. One of the greatest films ever made. The sequels aren't in the same class.
I watched all the Rocky and Creed movies for the first time within the span of about a month, last year. I'm 29... man, the Rocky series is one of my favourite series of all time! I loved the whole thing. And what they're doing with the Creed series is wonderful as well. Looking forward to Creed 3! I hope, as rumours have stated otherwise, that Rocky is in fact in that movie.
I agree watching them back to back is a different experience. It feels like one movie really. It could’ve ended there and it would’ve be still remembered as being great. But they didn’t end there thankfully . Needless to say these movies shaped my childhood . I’ve loved these movies my whole life. Few films if any can spark the kinda emotion these films do. The scene in Rocky 2 when Adrian wakes up and says “Win Rocky…win” the bell tolls and Mickey chimes in with “what are we waiting for.. Tickets “ makes me wanta run through a brick wall. I also love win he switches hands in the final fight . I love this franchise!
Not really. The share the same rythm and structure but handle different themes and points in the characters life. Each movie has Rocky fight for something uniqe to that movie and story.
Well done for focusing on the love story, the strength Adrian brings to the saga is pivotal. The very brief moment where she is left in prep room in Rocky just after he goes off to fight is truly powerful, driven in a single look you see her fear, discomfort, and hope surrounded by a haunting quietness. Followed by when she enters the arena at the end, she channels everything she has to Rocky, again in a single look. Beautiful moments.
hell of a love story. remember that scene where rocky corners her in his apartment and forces himself on her after her telling him multiple times shes uncomfortable and wants to leave? or when he follows her around and rambles on about nothing like hes got autism? then right after that magically shes no longer the quiet shy nerd who dresses like a bag lady and hes no longer a bumbling creepy retard. the first half of the movie is complete cringe and laughable.
"Rocky II" is correctly the superior film on every conceivable level: - The emotional stakes are more personal and their resolutions even more deeply resonant. - The acting performances are more nuanced and intimate. - Naturally, all the characters are further fleshed out and their dynamics and struggles more complex. - The central conflict is more vitally invested. - The aesthetics of music, editing. camera and fight choreography are more refined. - AND the perfectly realized plotting of the equally iconic sequel is actually more original than the first film (which is very much a still brilliant amalgam of "Marty" and "On The Waterfront" - with shades of "Somebody Up There Likes Me" and "Requiem For A Heavyweight"). *I think the first film is a bona fide classic! Just part 2 is maybe my favorite film ever!
You could have mentioned that Burt Young had a crush on Talia Shire and hated filming the scenes where he was horrible to her. Also, I have the novels of Rocky I to Rocky IV! 😁
Just rewatched both films. I believe the first hour and a half of Rocky 2 are just as good as the first Rocky. The storyline and character development is sensational, and the final scene of Rocky's speech and Adrian crying with snot running down her nose is automatic tears. The fight in Rocky 2 kinda threw me off. As a whole, Rocky 2 deserves more love
I love Rocky. Watch all of them back to back and you see full story of man rising up facing odds winning then falling then rising back up to beat odds again. Rocky movies tell story of never giving up and to fight with all your will and strength.
Great videos, as always---but why are ROCKY & ROCKY II presented in a matted "Scope" format when they were clearly filmed in Spherical 35mm ("Flat" format)? Huh?
Dude. Respectfully, I think you sold Rocky 2 short. There is so much there that you glossed over. Rocky's arc is much bigger, because Rocky 2 takes him lower than he's ever been before, so his climb to triumph is harder and more satisfying.
I've noticed that the best "sports films" of all time are never really about the sport. They are love stories or character studies. They sport is just a means to an end. The movies that focus too much on the sport itself tend to suck.
When I was a child I watched rocky 3 a couple of times before any other rocky movie. I used to love it. Then the first time I watched rocky 1 I thought: "wtf is this movie? Why does rocky only walk and talk instead of punching bad guys?".
Same for me. Rocky 3 was more fast paced and action packed. The first one was super slow. But as a grown up I learned to like it. 4th one is the best though 🥊😁
To the narrator of this video ~ Rocky II is the best sequel of the entire series and that’s a fact. It’s everything the first film was and more. Bigger budget, not one but two training montages and a fight that had Rocky’s face looking like hamburger by the time he wins the title. This film is a bigger adrenaline pump than all of the series put together. Adrian coming out of the her coma and telling Rocky to win and he does, yelling “Yo Adrian I did it” with Bill Conte’s score blazing in the the background is reason enough. Everything after this film was great comic book superhero MTV montages with opponents that were way too larger than life. A rematch with Creed was far more believable and Rocky II had more heart and was far more inspiring than the original and the sequels. Like you said, Cooglar used Rocky II as his inspiration for the Creed films.
Can’t believe how different Stallone looked in Rocky 2 compared to the first film and it was only 3 years later....And then of course in Rocky 3 he looked like a completely different person losing all that weight.
1 and 4 I watched every rocky movie with my brother, his girlfriend was unimpressed with fighting movies.., but i fancied stallone,,, what can you do other than tag along with your brother to the theatre 😁😎
1 is a 9 for me while 2 & 3 get a 10 in my book but I got sappy sentimental reasons behind that. Anyways Rocky was mainly what I watched as a kid not cartoons. My son is also named Apollo and yes after Apollo Creed. Good video. SKAL.
Still the best sports movie ever made. It's been inspiring generations after generations. And it features one of the greatest romances ever put on film. I still think Rocky Balboa is a better movie than Rocky 2
Rocky has provided the Spine of Sly's career. It is the character he has revisited many times over his career. Unlike his other iconic character John Rambo, Sly has directed pretty much a large chunk of the sequels from parts 2-6 "To Adrian, I did it." Yep Sly you really did.
I'm just a boxing causal so if anyone know better, I'll be happy to corrected. But the idea that Rocky loses but wins, isn't quite correct. The match ends with Creed defeated, only to be saved by landing into the ropes and not the mat. The film gives him a tiny moment to show that he could have won by his sheer brute force. If he did it 10 seconds earlier and in the center in the ring, he could have won (these themes get repeated in the final match in Creed). Rocky is in the match due to random luck. Creed wins the match by random lucky. Okay, Rocky 2. This is more complicated. At the end when they both hit the mat, Rocky shouldn't of have to beat the count. It was clearly a slip not a knock out. But it still works, the ref made a bum call. Which means literally everything is against Rocky winning even boxing itself. The film ending still works without knowing that, but it add an extra layer of drama if you do.
