Rocky V: The Worst Movie of the Franchise?

  • Fans of the franchise mainly hate Rocky V. It took the triumph of Rocky IV and turned it into a tragedy for the Italian Stallion, with him suffering a potentially deadly injury due to his bout with Drago. Wiped out financially thanks to Paulie (who else?), Rocky, Adrian (Talia Shire - in her last entry in the saga) and Robert (Sage Stallone) have to relocate to Philly, where Rocky takes over Mickey's old gym. There he finds a prospect, Tommy Gunn (the late Tommy Morrison), who he can turn into a contender, only for ego and a Don King-like promoter to get in the way, concluding in a ridiculous street fight. Stallone has slammed the movie over the years, but is it as bad as all that? We'll dig into it on this episode of Sylvester Stallone Revisited!

Yeah, this is at the core of what I did like about Rocky V. It's decent overall, but I didn't expect the street fight. It surprised me if I'm being honest. I thought the fight choreography was well directed. I've gone back and just watched that scene because I liked it so much.

The bottom line is, critics mocked Stallone for turning Rocky into a somewhat idealized hero, so he just had to bring the character down a peg or two. That's all there was to it. Stallone lost his confidence in the late 80's, and he's been groveling for the critics ever since...one of the saddest sights I've ever seen....

    • @wendaltvedt4673

There are way way more reasons why R5 gets so much hate. For starters the acting is just awful by almost all the characters including Stallone. And it has a lot of cringe moments. Like when his kid yells to his bully "go for it!!" before beating him up. Or when Rocky is losing to Tommy but suddenly the Rocky music starts playing and hears Mickey's voice and gets a jolt of energy it was like when Popeye eating his spinach giving him super strength it was that bad and cliche. It's just laughable from start to finish and ultimately an insult to the franchise.

Rocky V is underrated as hell. A great film that really could have ended the series in a great place. Rocky loses everything material, but regains his sense of self worth in the eyes of his family and himself, right back where it all started. It made everything come full circle, imo.

I find it a great movie.
It's incredible seeing someone brought down, and then rising back up again.
His son was honestly perfect for the role, he acted like a true, confused, angry young man would naturally act.
Love Morrison also, he was an actual boxer and acted like one, not some actor "faking" boxing.
The entire movie felt real, it was mixed with intense drama and also action.
I can't honestly see why anyone would hate it when it fits in perfectly with the story line.
He came from nothing but being a thug, made tons of money but never invested in himself to learn how to manage that, he fell back down because of his (sorry to say) ignorance, and then he climbed back up a stronger and smarter man.
After this part of his story, he learned and went on to have a successful business, he wouldn't have been able to do that before.
He stayed true to the character.
A winner knows how to fall but get back up.
Maybe it's not as "climatic" ad previous ones, but it shows a incredible story and dives more into the depth of Rocky.
Take Adrian for example, she loved Rocky for a reason, and many of those reasons show in this movie.

I always liked Oscar, I think it showed Stallone actually had great range but nobody could see him as more than the action guy. I truly don't think Stallone wanted to be an action star. I think he wanted to be seen as just a great actor but even his best works, "Copland" Rocky's 1-3 and Balboa, and even the original "First Blood" are great stories with action. I think he had to become the action star because he didn't have a choice.

I understand if there are those who do not like this film. But, as for myself, count me in as someone who adores Rocky V. It has its flaws to be sure especially the age jump for Rocky's son and the power of attorney plot seems flimsy. After all, how could Paulie be in charge of the Balboa's finances when he was in Russia with Rocky and Adrian.
But what I've always said about this film and what I love about it is that it is essentially the Star Wars of the Rocky series, more specifically Revenge of the Sith.
All the 3 key players are there, Rocky is Obi-Wan Kenobi, Tommy Gunn is Anakin Skywalker ( he even has an Anakin-like mullett), and crooked fight promoter George Washington Duke is of course Emperor Palpatine.
Like Kenobi, Balboa has to eventually put down his once promising pupil who has embraced the dark side of boxing. And Rocky accomplished this without ever having to use the high ground😄.
But seriously, I love how the final confrontation is a literal street fight. Because at the end of the day, moreso than a professional boxer, Rocky is a down and dirty brawler from the streets, and that is true for many real life boxers as well.
I also give this film points for actually tackling the real life ramifications of prolonged boxing and the detrimental effect it has on the human body. And although the power of attorney plot is wonky, the truth of the matter is, there are a lot of athletes not just boxers who have gone flat broke because they did not know how to manage their money.
Also, everyone gets to shine in this movie, Talia, Burt, Sage (may he rest in peace), and of course Burgess Meredith (may he rest in peace as well) all have their moments in this film.
Yes, there is a lot to like about Rocky V.

@wendaltvedt4673 AGREED!. As I stated before, the power of attorney plot is flimsy, which is another way of saying it wasn't very well thought out, mainly for the reason you listed.
I understand what Sly was trying to accomplish with "Rocky V." He wanted to bring the character back to what made him likable in the first place, that loveable lug of a fighter from the streets with a heart of gold.
Hell, Stallone even had the character revert back to his old palooka dialect from "Rocky I and II" , where as in the 3rd and 4th films, Rocky spoke more eloquently. It was like he had educated himself after the events of "Rocky II." And it does make sense since Adrian was teaching him how to read in "Rocky II."
Ultimately, the idea of "Rocky V" may have been well intentioned and interesting in theory, but the end result underwhelmed. And yes, I am aware that Sly had thought of killing off Rocky in the 5th film.
Personally, I didn't want Rocky to lose his fortune. I always liked the "rags to riches" aspect of Rocky.

I still have a real liking for V, especially for its production history and workprint. I believe it was the first Rocky film I actually saw so it holds something close to my heart. It was a great era when this came out for films, no matter how hated this film was even by Stallone himself. I liked how dark it was in places and just how over the top the finale was. This did feel like a desperate attempt by Avildsen after coming off the backlash of The Karate Kid Part III. It certainly has a lot of problems but I appreciate the full circle approach of bringing it to a close at the time. I've always loved the closure with Elton John's 'Measure Of A Man.' Such a wonderful tune that doesn't get the praise it deserves.

What mainly hurts the film is a weak bad guy ( the promoter ) and Tommy Gunn. Tommy wasn’t likable enough to pull for and he was a weak villain at the end . Should’ve hired a actor and not a boxer . Tommy had no range as a actor . He played it pretty much the same . I wasn’t upset at all when Rocky took out Tommy . I wanted him to do it the first time they met.

The fight at the end was by far the worst one in any of the Rocky's by a wide margin. Not to mention that he lost all of his dam money and didn't even have a drug problem. It does have its faults, but there are a lot of good things in it. I thought there were some great scenes with Rocky & Adrian (the one near the end in particular was very good), & Mickey's cameo was also quite moving. Despite Paulie screwing up at the start, I did like how his character is throughout the rest of it. I also didn't think Sage Stallone was that bad.
Obviously, the premise could have been handled better, & it is jarring to see Rocky Jr as a young kid in 4, only to see him in his teens just days later in 5, but I still think there is a lot of good ideas in there that its no where near as bad as its reputation. Rocky Balboa is clearly a better film, but I still think 5 is decent.

I even loved Lockup.

Rocky V is below under rated. There's so much commentary about the fighting community. It's a lot smarter than people think.
From the CTE damage fighters get but have to keep fighting, to poor money management, corrupt promotions, up and comers with something to prove. There's so freaking much. It's not as good as southpaw though. I literally cry in that movie. It takes all my manly man combat athlete out of me.

Just finished watching Rocky 5. Worst one of the franchise my ass, this movie was awesome! All the callbacks to the first 2 movies and going back to the streets of Philadelphia, the dynamic of Rocky ignoring his son in favor of Tommy, and then Tommy becoming the antagonist of the movie was a twist I didn’t see coming. People probably hate this one just because Rocky doesn’t fight in a big hyped up boxing match for the finale, but I appreciated that they did something different since the last 4 movies all end in a big boxing match, and Rocky fighting in a street fight is just plain awesome.

Worst? Yes. Bad? Not at all. What’s wrong with it is Robert’s age jump and narrative inconsistencies from the previous film(s). Stallone’s performance is actually brilliant in this film and one of his best ever. Somehow that gets overlooked by this film’s underserved reputation.

I've never seen Rocky Balboa, only Rocky I-V & the two Creed each one time. That being said, I don't wanna say it's the worst in the franchise because again, I've only seen them all once and I feel like I can find at least one good and bad thing in each. Like Creed losing to Pretty Ricky Conlan in the first film or beating Drago by DQ in the second. As far as the fifth film I enjoyed it. Of course it could have been better as evidence by Channel Awesome's Fanscription video, but just because it's the "worst" in the franchise, does not means it's one of the worst films ever. If you ask me it unarguably better than Grudge Match.

For starters the acting is just awful by almost all the characters including Stallone. And it has a lot of cringe moments. Like when his kid yells to his bully "go for it!!" before beating him up. Or when Rocky is losing to Tommy Gunn but suddenly the Rocky music starts playing and hears Mickey's voice and gets a jolt of energy it was like when Popeye eating his spinach giving him super strength it was that bad and cliche. Even the Mickey flashback scenes were cringe, Mickey loved Rocky but would have never talk to him that way. It's just laughable from start to finish and ultimately an insult to the franchise.

As someone who grew up with Stallone's movies from Rocky onward's. The first 4 Rocky's were amazing, I even enjoyed Over the top, Lock up & even Rambo 3 a little! He embodied everything about 80's America, I think all of us kids in the U.K. looked at America with awe!!! Schwarzenegger was a great action hero, but Stallone was ALWAYS the under dog made good, so holds a special place as a reflection of that! I queued in snow covered ground for 6 hours to get in to see Rocky 4 in January 1985 (U.K. cinemas only had 3 screens at the time & each was showing a different movie) So I got to see the second showing on the opening day. The atmosphere was amazing! they stopped the advertisements & started the film because of the feet stomping & chants of "Rocky,Rocky, Rocky!" could be heard in ALL 3 screens. It was incredible! The cheers from us all at the end would rival ANY live event in an arena! Everyone exited on a massive high! Then the cinema experience of Rocky 5 was the exact opposite! We came out unanimously disliking the film immensely. So after the years of seeing Rocky 2, 3 & 4 at the cinema this hurt a lot! So I saw it that once & never again! I've seen the sequels after 5 and Creed 1 & 2 many times, but Rocky 5 remains a horrible blip in my memories!

Gremlins 2; Ghostbusters 2; Predator 2 and Batman Returns were all sequels that at first were not well received by fans but over the years have been given a better appreciation and that applies to Rocky V, the flashback that Rocky has in the gym about Mick is always a tear jerker. About the one downgrade I give is the use of hip hop songs which was becoming more prevalent in in the early 90's because some chud studio president felt like getting hip to the youth culture.

I think one of the reasons why people was hard on this film was that they had gotten so used to the high octane, fast paced action film type of what Rocky 3 and 4 have been and then going to back to the slow dramatic elements that the original Rocky was is what hurt Rocky 5. But looking past all that in hindsight in rear view mirror I think Rocky 5 is a solid film.
