- This is from Studio MAPPA's anime adaptation of "Jigokuraku (Hell's Paradise)".
Jigokuraku / Hell's Paradise
Gabimaru the Hollow, a ninja of Iwagakure Village known for being cold and emotionless, was set up by his fellow ninja and is now on death row. Tired of killing and betrayal, he wants to die. However, no method of execution works on him because as much as the seemingly apathetic Gabimaru refuses to admit it, he does have a reason to live. He wants to return to his wife, who was the reason why he softened up and failed to be an effective assassin. Thus, he refuses to die.
Asaemon the Decapitator, a famous executioner, sees this and has a proposal for the ninja. She wants Gabimaru to join an expedition to an island south of Japan in search of the elixir of life in exchange for a full pardon by the Shogunate. However, this island isn't a normal island: it's believed to be Paradise.
However the island is full of mysteries, and the exploring team-consisting of those marked for death-might not be fully prepared to handle them.

Even though i find it interesting when an anime/manga provides realisitic plot armour to humans...It just makes me sadder and sadder as i watch my favourite characters get killed way too fast...RIP Tenza

The fact that the Lord tensen acknowlegded how tough tenza was just surprising. If he would've survived longer he would've learned how to use tao like master did. RIP to a legend 💪🏾

There was something about this being Subaru's voice actor that hit me extra hard. Both characters are boys who gave up on themselves, found people to believe in them and finally decided to dedicate themselves to getting stronger.

I personally identified with him a lot, in good ways and bad ways, so whether I love him or hate him I can't exactly ignore him without ignoring myself, if you know what you mean.
And because Tenza's struggles reminded me of Subaru's, it also made me identify with him. I'm sorry if that offends you somehow, but it's just how I feel: they seem alike.

This moment always makes me sad because if these monsters couldn't revive he would have killed them. But they are literally built different so they don't really care if they take damage because they can just regrow the damage done to them.

The was the first ever time I’ve cried for an anime, and that’s out of about 120+ different shows. This was truly one of the most memorable scenes I’ve ever watched.

The problem of killing a character in an anime is the posibility of that character being the principal reason that someone has to watch the show. And with so many animes, games and shows, is easy to drop it.

Finally something different! A “real” story! I hate to see characters surviving impossibile stages just because they are major supporting characters or main one… this is a world where the mangaka has tried to make us feel the danger of that island and realistic emotions and this was the damn case! A warrior fighting for the lives of his master and the prisoner, fighting even while dying, this is pure poetry guys!! Appreciate this masterpiece

That said I do admire the constant defying of tropes -
1. Main protagonists get together: unlikely, even if the author teases a bit
2. Student seek to avenge master: reversed
3. Purest characters are main characters: side showed or removed early
What's the similarities between Tenza and Junpei Yoshino?
Both have interesting backstory and died early.

After finishing s1 anime, and grinded the manga from the zero, Tenza's death and him appearing for Nurugai.... the dude, as potato head head as it may, had my throat sore. Rest in peace, Asaemon samurai.
Damn man I can't help but feel like Tenza was wasted character potential, seeing him go out this way. Lad didn't deserve it, wish the outcome had involved him surviving somehow.
