Our oldest daughter has the same struggle. She wants what we have now without doing the work we did to get here. She will be 29 next month.

I'm glad with the way I think lol I dont like spending money I enjoy seeing my money grow. I started with nothing so ima be excited when my back account says 100k by next year
I always spend money without worrying about it but it’s just things like normal living expenses,buying organic, simple pleasures, world travel, paying cash for car and and beach home,early retirement, nine year mortgage on primary home,etc..which were priorities in my life.
Debt free and no financial issues.
I don’t buy to impress people so no new car debt,stupid big homes, and materials things collecting dust.
Even my neighbors don’t know I’m early retired a year ago and spending the summer in Europe.

My ex blew most of our money buying things because her parents had it. She had no perspective that it took them 30 years to accumulate it, not 30 weeks.

Sit down with your fiancé and dream. Talk about all the things you want to do in the future. Then make a vision board and hang it within everyday view. Then every time you want to buy something unnecessary, go look at that board. Keep reminding yourself where you want to be!

There is a balance that needs to ne achieved. Materialism is a motivation to work hard and responsibility makes you realize your desires are tempered by your work.
When people have a void in themselves, they try to fill it with material things. Find fulfillment in what you do everyday and you won't need to go on a spending spree every chance you get

I’ve always lived within my means,saved,and invested avoiding debt so all of that is stupid to me.
No money worries and buy what I want. I’m just not financially stupid.
I’m more into memories and experiences from traveling the world to something as simple as a cup of fresh hot green tea or good book.
My life changed when my wife and I created a vision for our life. It’s easy to say no when you know what you value and where you are headed.
Live way below your means. It is the American way our great grandparents lived. The greatest depression is just beginning.
Always prepare as if it will be regardless of if it actually will be. That way, preparedness is as close to guaranteed as can be.
Not living below means.
I just live within my personal means with zero debt.. Don’t need to stoop low financially like that.
I’m spending the summer with girlfriend in Europe using cash. Better and a lot cheaper than payments on a car that’s parked unused 20 hours a day.
People create their own depression,drama,fear,etc..and watch too much media.

I don't know why the caller would have a hard time with delayed gratification if it was just a few years away. You sure in his and his wife's case the life they want to live is not 20 -30 years away? I suspect that a lot of people will end up poor because the life they were looking for took more that one lifetime to reach just saying!!! They just need to find happiness in simple things and everything else will follow. Thinking that expensive things can give us happiness is what makes us fall in the trap
Trap is the keyword, traps are made to look good to entice you into them. Hunters trick animals with traps and it works. We need to think on that mindset that there are bad people and bad things in this world that wants to trap us and trick us into the traps.
Sacrifice and hardwork are the backbone of success.

Same here. Watched my parents struggle for years and finally being in a good place financially. I want to get there earlier too that's why I'm working hard and living frugally. I don't understand how buying expensive things can get you there early.
My parents didn’t struggle at all. They just lived within means,saved,snd invested without getting in debt. They bought a home and had kids they could afford to raise properly.
Myself and sisters had no issues either.
Never in a bad financially place living within means,avoiding debt,saving,and investing.
Don’t know where this “struggle” always come from unless you’re already in deep debt and paycheck to paycheck already.
“Struggle” is voluntary and not mandatory.
Having a plan is important.
They keep saying the word motivation. It isn’t about motivation, it’s about discipline. Motivation fades, but discipline stays with you.
Discipline also fades. Nothing is fade proof unless you keep working on it.
That’s because that’s all these “motivational speakers” sell.

@@Anna_Bruno97not necessarily. There are days I don’t feel motivated to go to the gym because I didn’t sleep well or I just plain want to lay on the floor all day. But I still make the choice to go because I know I’ll regret it if I don’t.

3:40 this is exactly right. A few months ago I became committed to being debt free asap so my kids can have a better life than I did. Since then I have cut my monthly expenses by over 50%.
When you have your why, you will overcome anything to get there

@@genxx2724 I’m pretty sure I was able to cut or decrease every expense I have. rent, bills, subscriptions, food, transportation. Also doing things like getting a job judging restaurants so I can eat for free most nights.

If one fails to learn in life they will continue repeating the life lessons never truly learning anything other than dying ignorant.

People buy things to cope with their psychological problems to get by.
If you have free time to look at things that you can’t afford then you have time to grind and make more money so you can afford those things. I find what helps me out is finding hobbies that are low budget. That way I have something that I enjoy doing on my free time that doesn’t break the bank and also have a feeling of balance of work/play in my life.
I enjoy mountain biking and outdoor activities. Generally very affordable and relaxing.

Why not recommend that they save for the luxury items? The point is to avoid debt. The goal is not to have a miserly life experience. They can enjoy an improved lifestyle, but based on savings, not based on debt.
He sort of said that. That's why he talked about them having a vision for their life in the future. When you have an impulse you ask yourself and your spouse "does this add to the goal or take away from the goal?"
They don't stand a chance. They aren't interested in sacrificing/delaying gratification.

I don't get this call. A budget doesn't mean you can't go buy fun things, it just means you actually *know* what fun things you're buying and that you're doing it intentionally.
The problem is people don't care about being broke as much as they "want" the car, house, clothes, vacation, etc.
They feel comfortable if they can “afford” the payments.
You just put the money in the envelope. Then spend to your hearts content the money in the envelope

I haven't been on a vacation for 3 years because I have a mortgage which I am trying to pay sooner. And when my friend go for a trip to some fine destination, I have a trip to a place called "side hustle".
These people don't even have to do beans and rice. They can easily do beans and chicken and not go over budget

I struggle with this too, and I know that the media I consume fuels it and that I need to avoid it at all costs because it’s just going to keep me unhappy and stuck.

Who would spend over $200 on one nights meal? Regardless of how wealthy you are that's a poor decision..... Some of my best meals have been made at home for $20 or less.....
Some people are foodies. Same as someone liking expensive cars or another hobby/passion. Yes, you can have a great inexpensive meal but you can also buy a reliable, inexpensive used car. Some people like to treat themselves once in a while to something special.
I’m fine with blowing that kind of money but only on special occasions when it is preplanned and not just an impulse splurge. I also prefer it to be something that is difficult or a pain to make at home.
For instance, I very much know my way around a grill, I pride myself on making a delectable steak, so I don’t buy steaks at a restaurant for double the price. But seafood for something that I’m not good at cooking, spending the intentional pretty penny is fine occasionally/rarely.

That's like saying I struggle with my weight but I don't want to diet. What are you supposed to say to that? You either do it or you don't. If you are unwilling to make changes then you need to stop complaining about the consequences.

I get tired of hearing that our grandparents and their parents were wiser and spent less.
It's not that they were wiser and smarter. They didn't have the same financial system back then that we have today. It's incredibly easy to spend money today with subscriptions, tap to pay, and automation. It takes far more discipline to not overspend.... If you introduced the same system to that time period, they would have the same problems.

I’ve walked down some of those paths to hurt my finances. Plan to save and pay cash for that Benz. Guarantee when he has the cash saved up, he won’t want to spend it on that Benz.
I completely sympathize with the caller, since I was in that exact same place in my 20s (and 30s and 40s).
This is what happens when you raise your kids at a standard of living only YOU can afford.
Raising kids is sacrifice. This means surrendering time, preferences, and pleasures. No one, including Dave, is willing to talk about reducing your lifestyle while parenting so your kids have an appreciation of wealth rather than entitlement.

I relate to this so much! I know EXACTLY what I need to do to achieve financial independence and build wealth and I’m doing those things BUT fast food/take away does hold me back from achieving my goals faster. At my worst, I was spending about $500 on Uber Eats/Just Eat a month. $500 I could have invested in my ‘IRA’. It’s just so hard. Now, I’m down to about $250 and even this is hard to not go over. I struggle SO bad with this, because I don’t want groceries, I don’t want chicken and rice or salad, unless it’s work lunch. I just love fast food eating out too much. Any advice?
Learn to cook.
Once you get better at cooking, you will not want fast food anymore. It will taste better than the fast food. Be open with cooking. Try lots of different types of food and different cuisines. UA-cam has tons of cooking videos on here. If you like fast food, try learning how to cook those favorites such as homemade french fries or homemade pizzas. I've gotten really good at making pizza dough this past year that my husband doesn't want me to ever order pizza again.
I’m not shitting you restaurant food is not as good as what can make at home. When you start to cook well it you just will not be see the point in buy food out.
