    Thank you guys for recommending a leak down test!!! This is a follow up to the after math of my 2022 road glide ST cylinder, rings and, pistons replaced because of excessive oil consumption/ blow by. Turns out the rings failed and then it all went to crap and that’s why my M8 was eating 1quart of oil every 1,000 miles. I was lucky and got all the work and parts done under warranty for $0.00 cost to me. So thank you for mentioning in another video to have a leak down test done. 👍🏻👍🏻🤓

      Awe man that stinks that you had to have all that work done, but I am glad that you done the leak down test and took it in while it still had warranty to get the work done. Glad our video helped! Thank you for commenting 👍😎👍! MB

    *I FORGOT to Mention this in the video.* A leakdown test should be performed when the engine is at full operating temperature (180-210 F). We did warm it up to this, but the process of making a video slowed it down the testing a bit and it was not fully warm when performing the test...might have made a 1-2% difference in the results. If we had performed the test fully warmed up, the results likely would have been 7 or 8% leakdown.

    Great video. An acceptable range of under 25% and it can burn a quart of oil every 1,000 miles. Gotta love it.

    A word of warning Kevin. I used a wooden chopstick as well and had a little difficulty because I wasn't looking at the chopstick when making a fine adjustment and it caught and broke, leaving a small piece inside my compression chamber!!! Next time I'll use a plastic straw or something that will bend.

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  Рік тому

      Yes. I should have mentioned that in the video...I did look for a plastic straw, could not find one, so used the chop stick...carefully....they do have a tendency to want to bind up.

    Hey guys thanks for the education, I’m am looking to buy a used Harley after a few decades and have been searching for good info and just found it after endless searching. Going tomorrow to look at a 2012 cvo convertible with 30,000 miles now I have some great information. Appreciate your knowledge

      Definitely want to look at a used bike very carefully. The nice thing about Harley's is that even if they have sustained some damage they keep running. The bad thing is that they keep running, and unless you do a leakdown, you cannot know if there is damage that is robbing performance.

    Got my first bike (2011 Softail Heritage) about 2 years ago. Been apart for over a year cause I’ve been going through everything upgrading parts and replacing some parts, had it down to basically just the engine/trans in the frame. Only has 3500 miles but it had rust forming in some areas so had to take care of all that. Have yet to do a leak down test, wish I would have been aware of getting a leak down test before buying at the dealership! I’m thinking it’s good since the engine is low miles, but will know for sure after I check. I polished all the engine fins so hopefully I don’t have to replace the heads. :p Hoping to have her all buttoned up and ready to roll for spring time with a bunch of DK upgrades I got. :]

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  Рік тому

      Yes, you are probably good on the leakdown with those low miles.
      Sounds like a good 2023 is in the works for you as you get her buttoned back up for riding.
      Appreciate your business, and I believe you are going to be well pleased with the parts. 👍😎👍

    Great video!!! All of your videos are so helpful. Thank you for posting them. Any tips for stopping the o ring from pushing out when the tester gets to 100psi. I have tried different ways till i could find that sweet spot so it wouldn't leak . You make it look so easy lol .

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  7 місяців тому

      Don't know what tester you have...but if you have tried tightening it a bit so it won't pop out, or loosening it a bit so it is not getting pushed out, then I would begin suspecting a bad o-ring or tester

      In my 2019 manual it is on page 4-13.
      The section is Cylinder Leakdown Test
      In the video linked below we talk more about it, and show it in the manual around the 4:40 mark-

    Would you suggest a vented oil fill cap if I am building pressure in the crank case? I have a 13' RG. 44K miles and I am getting significant oil from the lifter tubes. My compression test was at 93 and 96 psi. I'm guessing the leak down will be in the 10% range. (Getting a kit ordered to do the test. should be here in the next couple days) Would this be an acceptable temporary option until I re-do the rings (which is what my guess is the real problem)

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  4 місяці тому

      Yes, that is a good interim solution. 👍
      Vented dipsticks and transmission cover vents do NOT take the place of external breather systems.
      There is still hot, oily, oxygen depleted air being fed into the intake.
      The folks that sell vented dipsticks and trans cover vents, have it right in their product description that they do not prevent all that crap from going into your intake.
      Here is a copy and paste from the Trask website- "This will reduce the oil exiting from the head breathers..."
      Even if there is no trace of oil in the intake, there is still hot, oxygen depleted air going into the combustion chambers, making the engine run hotter, and not as strong because of the lower oxygen content.
      *With your bike that is building a lot of crankcase pressure, then it is beneficial to do an EBS And a vented dipstick or trans cover vent.* KP

    Ive done a leak down test and both exhaust valves are leaking, could it be the push-rods need to be adjusted..? Or new exhaust valves..

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  8 місяців тому

      Man, sorry to hear that.
      It could be the pushrods, if they are adjustable, and they were never set right, or have come loose. It could also be the valves, but more likely it is the valve seats.
      The most likely possibilities are:
      1. Too much carbon build up, there is a video on it, and how to resolve it so it does not happen again- ua-cam.com/video/EfDeFZblMck/v-deo.html
      2. The engine has gotten too hot and the valve seats/heads are warped/deformed. Here is a video on that- ua-cam.com/video/2YrM7f321JE/v-deo.html
      Once you get it resolved, here is a written report on how to avoid a repeat in the future- www.dkcustomproducts.com/why-how-to-cool-down-the-twin-cam-engine-part-i-dk-cl-tc-dn-1.htm

    Have a buddy with a twin cam softail its leaking almost all the oil out the air box vent tubes within a few minutes ,he changed the rocker box breathers it didn't help, is the next step leak down test?

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  Рік тому

      Oh wow! Yes, that is what I would do. It will let him know if there is trouble with the valves or rings sealing that is causing that, or if not, then there is something else going on...but the Leak-Down is a fast, inexpensive first step in narrowing down what is causing that.

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  Рік тому

      You don't want to see over 10% on any Twin Cam. If you do, it is time to start thinking about a Top End Rebuild.

    What is the ideal air pressure for the test?

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  Рік тому

      100 psi at the tester, be good to have 125 psi or higher in the compressor tank.

    Did youdo the leak down test at peratng temp

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  Рік тому +1

      Yes, well, sort of. We warmed it up to operating temp, but then the process of making the video slowed things down a bit, so it was not ideally warmed up.
      Plus, I forgot to mention that being at operating temp is where it should be when performing that test. I will add that to the description.
      Thank you! 👍

    My warranty is about to end. Would you recommend a catch can and besides reducing scorching on pistons will it also help with heat reduction on a 21 Tri Glide M8.

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  Рік тому

      Yes, an External Breather System will stop that crap from going into your intake, it will help it run stronger, and it will decrease temps a little bit. You can see more info at this video- ua-cam.com/video/EfDeFZblMck/v-deo.html
      To get the temps down on your 21 TG, you may find the Written Report at the following link to be useful-

    How many miles on your Trike ?

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  Рік тому +1

      Just under 12K of prime riding miles. Prior to our new way of getting to riding locations, it would have been 40 or 50K miles.
      I am not happy that it is up at the 9-10 range. But we did a lot of before & after testing, so that "before" testing was not ideal, at all.
