Awesome interview! I can hear the best of both of his parents in this interview: Droll humor, sarcasm, and gritty honesty. Will be checking Amazon for the book on Bogart and looking forward to the book on Bacall.

Can't disagree with Muller vociferously enough.
'It's better to enjoy the influence on modern films than recreate what was done before...?' I agree, we don't want Film Noir to collapse into pastiche and parody... but you're basically saying it's better to have a fleet of crappy, formulaic modern crime films with shakeycam and spooky lighting...
...than to have Robert Mitchum in "Farewell, My Lovely" (1974).
That's a classic Noir. It just happened to be recorded in 1974. And it holds up. Ditto for ChinaTown. Or L.A. Confidential. Or Mulholland Falls.
I would MUCH rather have those... than fifty subpar Nolan films that steal the lighting arrangements and crime elements, and lose the style, panache and snappy dialogue because it isn't 'commercial'. This guy is called 'The Czar of Noir', yet if you really analyze what he's saying, here: He's basically advocating the rape and pillage of the toolset of the genre he purports to preserve, so it can be commodified for the convenience of inferior modern films.

I heard Bacall was smitten with Kirk Douglas when she first got to Hollywood . Her son here says Cary Grant. The host here claims that John Wayne is not as popular as he once was! Dukes image is everywhere. Had he mentioned Cooper , Tracy or Gable i could see his point but even Duke's detractors accept him as a colossi of the industry.

But remember, the snide things at Wayne are typical of liberals. They can’t help themselves. To me, he is very much his Mom. He looks like Dad. Way fun interview.

His parents both had strong personalities . Steve has one too. Anyone even slightly irked by that better stay far away from Hollywood...and talented people , generally.

Eddie must no like Wayne. Wayne is still big. You can buy all kinds of John Wayne products on Amazon. Cookbooks, Iron Skillets, Cups. Books as well as his movie. Bogart has none of that going for him. Wayne will always be big. Bacall made Blood Alley with the Duke too.

Yes. Wayne is still enormously popular even overseas still. My British upper crust family absolutely adores all of his movies.
