In 1993 she was the recipient of the Right Livelihood Award, commonly known as the "Alternative Nobel Prize", and in 2010 Forbes Magazine identified Dr. Shiva as one of the Seven Most Powerful Women on the Globe.
During her keynote address at the Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont's 35th annual winter conference at the University of Vermont, she challenges the dominant paradigm of non-sustainable, industrial agriculture and explains why we need an "organic" future.

We don't need our farmers are producing nice verities by selective breeding though it takes many years for them to do so. We are happy with our seeds, we don't want India to be market of such money hungry corporations. They should do in their country not in our land.

"While I appreciate Vandana Shiva’s passion for the environment and crop diversity, most of her claims have been readily debunked. Her campaigns are subsidized by millions of dollars of contributions by organic food companies to spread lies about conventional agriculture to push an agenda. In my opinion, it is admirable if someone chooses to be an organic farmer-there are many ways to address food security issues as long as we promote cooperation and coexistence-but there is something wrong with lying to people for profit, such as her debunked claims that GMOs are vandanashiva1-1provoking Indian farmers to commit suicide. Needless to say, a huge percentage of what came out of Shiva’s mouth was myths and misrepresentations. She spent a lot of time tearing into Norman Borlaug, the scientist and ‘father of the Green Revolution-he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal before his death-and is credited with saving hundreds of millions of lives, and accused farmers of being “the last caretakers of the land.” Seriously? Who does that? Shiva is no friend to modern farmers or technology. Her misinformation was appalling and needless to say I was not impressed.
It was painful to sit through her nonsense, and the whole time I was wondering if she has ever even ridden in a combine or ever been to a large scale farm a day in her life. While she railed against “industrial, chemically intensive agriculture,” I wish she knew that farmers today are using less toxic chemicals than ever before. When complaining about soil and water quality, I wish she would connect with us and learn that farmers enroll in conservation programs and are the ultimate stewards of the land. Organic and conventional farms have a lot in common: both types of farms may or may not use chemicals, both types can do conservation methods like soil testing, crop rotation, cover crops, etc. This is not the agenda she had though. Apparently only organic farmers are concerned about sustainability, which couldn’t be further from the truth.
Shiva also shared the myth that GMOs kill bees, all while completely ignoring the fact that GMOs eliminate our need to spray insecticides, which helps beneficial insects. GMOs cause suicides, Monsanto is trying to poison everyone, monocultures! Patents! Seed saving! The list of myths goes on. The reality is that farmers have hundreds of seed companies to choose from, all different types of crops can have patents including organic, and today’s farmers don’t want to save seeds. My head was spinning with how disconnected she is to modern farming and how much she really doesn’t understand our industry, while she gets paid to talk about this with no formal training or educational background in agriculture. Say what, now?
But there was hope! I was happy to know that there was a Q&A afterwards and I wasn’t going to sit back and let Shiva’s false accusations go without saying something. I encouraged everyone to connect with us as farmers. I took issue with her referring to pesticides as “poison,” as organic production uses pesticides too, and they are sometimes more toxic and more frequently used than the chemicals used by non-organic farmers. By her definition ALL food would be poison, but as any scientist would tell you, it’s the dose that makes the poison. I mentioned that when we spray the herbicide glyphosate (Monsanto’s Roundup) on our fields it is at a rate of 22 ounces per acre, which is less than 2 soda cans over an area of land the size of a football field. We only spray two days out of an entire year. Simply said, the food conventional farmers grow is not scary. It’s thanks to biotechnology that we are using less chemicals than ever before and no longer having to spray insecticides, which HELPS beneficial insects like bees, and does not hurt them as she misleadingly claimed. Our farm holds the award for “Iowa farmers of the year” in soil and water conservation because, as a result of modern technology including the use of genetically modified seeds, we use no till, cover crops and crop rotation. Biotechnology is doing great things for farmers and allows us to grow more food on less land while using less water, fuel, and inputs.
Shiva gave me the stink eye but didn’t say a word while I was speaking, other than “thanks.”
I really didn’t know what to expect from the crowd, but surprisingly, I was applauded! After I left I was approached by a group of people who thanked me. They said “You did a great job. I applaud your bravery. We appreciate hearing multiple sides of a story. You are welcome here,” etc. It was great. I was also approached by a security guard who wanted me to be aware that he would be following me around a bit to ensure my safety in case anyone tried to cause trouble. He even walked me to my car so that was nice. Surprisingly, not a single hater. None.
I want to share this story to encourage you all to stand up for the truth. For farmers, agronomists, scientists, etc speaking up HAS to be a part of our job description nowadays. We are the experts, we are the ones that have the most education and firsthand expertise on the topic. @@popeyegordon i just came to know about her yesterday even though I'm from India. I have watched 2 videos of her and so far, she is right about what she did in India about organic farming. How BT Cotton debt. lead to the death of about 250,000 indian farmers because they (Monsanto) were illegaly (then) collecting patent costs from indian seed seller companies who inturn collected it from the farmers. Sadly, the Supreme Court of india again overturned this verdict and Monsanto won. But after this, more people are going back to organic farming.

The leaked IB report raises concerns over the foreign-funding of Indian NGOs whose campaigning activities, the report claims, are hampering India's growth and development. In its report, the IB said that Indian NGOs, including Navdanya, receive money from foreign donors under the 'charitable garb' of campaigning for human rights or women's equality, but instead use the money for nefarious purposes. "These foreign donors lead local NGOs to provide field reports which are used to build a record against India and serve as tools for the strategic foreign policy interests of the Western governments," the IB report states.[48]
Investigative journalist Michael Specter, in an article in The New Yorker on 25 August 2014 entitled "Seeds of Doubt",[10] raised concerns over a number of Shiva's claims regarding GMOs and some of her campaigning methods. He wrote: "Shiva's absolutism about G.M.O.s can lead her in strange directions. In 1999, ten thousand people were killed and millions were left homeless when a cyclone hit India's eastern coastal state of Orissa. When the U.S. government dispatched grain and soy to help feed the desperate victims, Shiva held a news conference in New Delhi and said that the donation was proof that "the United States has been using the Orissa victims as guinea pigs" for genetically-engineered products, although she made no mention about that those same products are approved and consumed in the United States. She also wrote to the international relief agency Oxfam to say that she hoped it wasn't planning to send genetically modified foods to feed the starving survivors."[10]
Cases of plagiarism have been pointed out against Vandana Shiva. Birendra Nayak has published on her plagiarism involving copying verbatim from a 1996 article in Voice Gopalpur in her 1998 book Stronger than Steel.[51] Several paragraphs of an article by S Faizi on the Plachimada/Coca-Cola issue published in The Statesman in 2015 were plagiarized by Vandana Shiva in an article she published a year later.[52]

It was painful to sit through her nonsense, and the whole time I was wondering if she has ever even ridden in a combine or ever been to a large scale farm a day in her life. While she railed against “industrial, chemically intensive agriculture,” I wish she knew that farmers today are using less toxic chemicals than ever before. When complaining about soil and water quality, I wish she would connect with us and learn that farmers enroll in conservation programs and are the ultimate stewards of the land. Organic and conventional farms have a lot in common: both types of farms may or may not use chemicals, both types can do conservation methods like soil testing, crop rotation, cover crops, etc. This is not the agenda she had though. Apparently only organic farmers are concerned about sustainability, which couldn’t be further from the truth.
Shiva also shared the myth that GMOs kill bees, all while completely ignoring the fact that GMOs eliminate our need to spray insecticides, which helps beneficial insects. GMOs cause suicides, Monsanto is trying to poison everyone, monocultures! Patents! Seed saving! The list of myths goes on. The reality is that farmers have hundreds of seed companies to choose from, all different types of crops can have patents including organic, and today’s farmers don’t want to save seeds. My head was spinning with how disconnected she is to modern farming and how much she really doesn’t understand our industry, while she gets paid to talk about this with no formal training or educational background in agriculture. Say what, now?
But there was hope! I was happy to know that there was a Q&A afterwards and I wasn’t going to sit back and let Shiva’s false accusations go without saying something. I encouraged everyone to connect with us as farmers. I took issue with her referring to pesticides as “poison,” as organic production uses pesticides too, and they are sometimes more toxic and more frequently used than the chemicals used by non-organic farmers. By her definition ALL food would be poison, but as any scientist would tell you, it’s the dose that makes the poison. I mentioned that when we spray the herbicide glyphosate (Monsanto’s Roundup) on our fields it is at a rate of 22 ounces per acre, which is less than 2 soda cans over an area of land the size of a football field. We only spray two days out of an entire year. Simply said, the food conventional farmers grow is not scary. It’s thanks to biotechnology that we are using less chemicals than ever before and no longer having to spray insecticides, which HELPS beneficial insects like bees, and does not hurt them as she misleadingly claimed. Our farm holds the award for “Iowa farmers of the year” in soil and water conservation because, as a result of modern technology including the use of genetically modified seeds, we use no till, cover crops and crop rotation. Biotechnology is doing great things for farmers and allows us to grow more food on less land while using less water, fuel, and inputs.

I really didn’t know what to expect from the crowd, but surprisingly, I was applauded! After I left I was approached by a group of people who thanked me. They said “You did a great job. I applaud your bravery. We appreciate hearing multiple sides of a story. You are welcome here,” etc. It was great. I was also approached by a security guard who wanted me to be aware that he would be following me around a bit to ensure my safety in case anyone tried to cause trouble. He even walked me to my car so that was nice. Surprisingly, not a single hater. None.

Her popularity has grown as she positions herself as a modern-day Gandhi, a social justice warrior, an ecological feminist and an agroecologist. The problem is that most everything that comes out of her much amplified mouth is complete nonsense: pure fabrications easily and often refuted.

This is not a story about how wrong Vandana Shiva is, how she hypocritically profits from her lies or how dangerous she is to global food security. There is enough critical information out there. No. We do not applaud frauds and liars. "While I appreciate Vandana Shiva’s passion for the environment and crop diversity, most of her claims have been readily debunked. Her campaigns are subsidized by millions of dollars of contributions by organic food companies to spread lies about conventional agriculture to push an agenda. In my opinion, it is admirable if someone chooses to be an organic farmer-there are many ways to address food security issues as long as we promote cooperation and coexistence-but there is something wrong with lying to people for profit, such as her debunked claims that GMOs are vandanashiva1-1provoking Indian farmers to commit suicide. [Read GLP GMO FAQ addressing Shiva’s accusation]. She doesn’t back up her claims with reputable evidence and what she claims about conventional agriculture isn’t backed by science.
Needless to say, a huge percentage of what came out of Shiva’s mouth was myths and misrepresentations. She spent a lot of time tearing into Norman Borlaug, the scientist and ‘father of the Green Revolution-he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal before his death-and is credited with saving hundreds of millions of lives, and accused farmers of being “the last caretakers of the land.” Seriously? Who does that? Shiva is no friend to modern farmers or technology. Her misinformation was appalling and needless to say I was not impressed.
It was painful to sit through her nonsense, and the whole time I was wondering if she has ever even ridden in a combine or ever been to a large scale farm a day in her life. While she railed against “industrial, chemically intensive agriculture,” I wish she knew that farmers today are using less toxic chemicals than ever before. When complaining about soil and water quality, I wish she would connect with us and learn that farmers enroll in conservation programs and are the ultimate stewards of the land. Organic and conventional farms have a lot in common: both types of farms may or may not use chemicals, both types can do conservation methods like soil testing, crop rotation, cover crops, etc. This is not the agenda she had though. Apparently only organic farmers are concerned about sustainability, which couldn’t be further from the truth.
Shiva also shared the myth that GMOs kill bees, all while completely ignoring the fact that GMOs eliminate our need to spray insecticides, which helps beneficial insects. GMOs cause suicides, Monsanto is trying to poison everyone, monocultures! Patents! Seed saving! The list of myths goes on. The reality is that farmers have hundreds of seed companies to choose from, all different types of crops can have patents including organic, and today’s farmers don’t want to save seeds. My head was spinning with how disconnected she is to modern farming and how much she really doesn’t understand our industry, while she gets paid to talk about this with no formal training or educational background in agriculture. Say what, now?
But there was hope! I was happy to know that there was a Q&A afterwards and I wasn’t going to sit back and let Shiva’s false accusations go without saying something. I encouraged everyone to connect with us as farmers. I took issue with her referring to pesticides as “poison,” as organic production uses pesticides too, and they are sometimes more toxic and more frequently used than the chemicals used by non-organic farmers. By her definition ALL food would be poison, but as any scientist would tell you, it’s the dose that makes the poison. I mentioned that when we spray the herbicide glyphosate (Monsanto’s Roundup) on our fields it is at a rate of 22 ounces per acre, which is less than 2 soda cans over an area of land the size of a football field. We only spray two days out of an entire year. Simply said, the food conventional farmers grow is not scary. It’s thanks to biotechnology that we are using less chemicals than ever before and no longer having to spray insecticides, which HELPS beneficial insects like bees, and does not hurt them as she misleadingly claimed. Our farm holds the award for “Iowa farmers of the year” in soil and water conservation because, as a result of modern technology including the use of genetically modified seeds, we use no till, cover crops and crop rotation. Biotechnology is doing great things for farmers and allows us to grow more food on less land while using less water, fuel, and inputs.
Shiva gave me the stink eye but didn’t say a word while I was speaking, other than “thanks.”
I really didn’t know what to expect from the crowd, but surprisingly, I was applauded! After I left I was approached by a group of people who thanked me. They said “You did a great job. I applaud your bravery. We appreciate hearing multiple sides of a story. You are welcome here,” etc. It was great. I was also approached by a security guard who wanted me to be aware that he would be following me around a bit to ensure my safety in case anyone tried to cause trouble. He even walked me to my car so that was nice. Surprisingly, not a single hater. None.
I want to share this story to encourage you all to stand up for the truth. For farmers, agronomists, scientists, etc speaking up HAS to be a part of our job description nowadays. We are the experts, we are the ones that have the most education and firsthand expertise on the topic. This cost me my liver kidney and my wife's LEFT EYE.
I learnt a lot after farming and trying to do all the right things and cost efficient thing like staying organic.
I had goats cows and a dog most of my animals are poisoned and trees destroyed and and yhpusands stolen .
The land syndicate grampanchyat and B.D.O. make money by selling our agricultural land to building developers.

Her popularity has grown as she positions herself as a modern-day Gandhi, a social justice warrior, an ecological feminist and an agroecologist. The problem is that most everything that comes out of her much amplified mouth is complete nonsense: pure fabrications easily and often refuted.
Which leads to the question: How does Vandana consistently get away with such ridiculous falsehoods and oral assaults on intelligent thought? How can she weave the absurd into a web of allegations willingly consumed by her followers? How does she relentlessly fabricate conspiracy theories and package them for consumption among the Western liberal elite? This article will look at one web of lies she is presently spinning as an analysis of the germination of outrage.

As Vandana points her finger at Western economic models and institutions, she has profited quite well from lucrative speaking fees and first-class luxury living. She uses the free speech made available to her on university campuses to condemn farmers for freely choosing the seeds they want to grow. As Vandana attacks industry for their lack of openness, she will never engage in open debate with an adversary.
As long as Vandana controls the microphone, she can say what she wants, repeating it to her followers and making the outrageous a marketable outrage. Some of the claims she has repeatedly made, which would have destroyed the credibility of any mere mortal, include:
*Shiva: Indian farmers are killing themselves in much larger numbers after being exposed to pesticides and GMOs.
Fact: Indian farmer suicide rates are lower than the national average.
*Shiva: 75% of all diseases are caused by a “Poison Cartel” of three chemical companies.
Fact: This is too absurd to consider. We are living longer and healthier lives.
*Shiva: The Green Revolution in the 1960s destroyed India’s way of life.
Fact: Until the Green Revolution, India was plagued with famines and chronic malnutrition.
This is not a story about how wrong Vandana Shiva is, how she hypocritically profits from her lies or how dangerous she is to global food security. There is enough critical information out there. This is a story about how Vandana’s lies germinate into conspiracy theories packaged for outrage consumption.
With Shiva, the truth doesn’t matter. She simply ignores any fact-checking, corrections and personal criticisms. Her adoring audience wants to hear what Shiva has to say, without a care for whether it is true or not.
