  • It's time for another Dominions single player series. This time I'm playing as Ermor in the Early Age, with their Roman units, Christian-like priests and fortune telling mages they're really, really interesting, especially when you throw a rather dark fascination with Death magic into the equation.
Dominions 6 is the latest game in a venerable series of fantastic fantasy strategy games from Illwinter Games Design. Without a doubt one of the most complex and potentially intimidating video games ever made, it is also incredibly playable and fun, and in this single player series, I hope to show how the game can be played in a thematic way that plays to the lore of the game.

33:00 the cavalry swerve. The AI does seem to have a bias towards the top of the screen (it's weird to me that attack or defend the top of your deployment is always the top rather than always being the army's left flank)

3:30 Most rolls have 2d6 added in Dominions. It's worth noting in context of Heavenly fire because while usually those rolls meet another 2d6 coming the other way and mostly get cancelled, AN damage bypasses that and is therefore substantially bigger than it looks. 2x10 AN damage is also substantially more than 1x20 AN damage (without the AN the 20 is much better).
...or I've failed at Dominions comprehension again.

1:19 Needs more slingers for a proper roman army. :P
20:48 It could be that he is old and it's winter. Though Well of Pestilence is a level 3 site. Might still be worth using a Dark Knowledge spell on that province.
21:20 Recuperation stops working with old age. Normal healing does not. Just bring him to your Bishop and he is going to be fine. Don't know about disease healers, but I think they will continue working too.
27:29 You are over your squad limit with Dispater too. That reduces everyones morale by 1 as well. Might be better to move one squad to another commander. Or merge them.
30:15 Funnily enough mages will generally stay behind troops and cast spells, even if you leave them on the default AI.
34:37 Cold blooded has been heavily toned down in Dom 6. +2 fatigue? That isn't that much. The base encumbrance is twice as much. There are heavy armored troops with 8 or more encumbrance.
35:33 Forgot to mention the real star of the show. The single Augur Elder with 17 kills. Probably including some friendlies. :D

11:00 Seems to me that without any obvious way to remove the Old Age form Triarii, they're front line troops. There's no morale incentive to let them retire (as for Romans -where they also helped pacify civilian populations by their presence) and their value (but not their upkeep) will decrease every year whether you use them or not. They're both tough and disposable so I'd put them front-and-centre with other units positioned to wrap the flanks.
...unless I was trying to replicate actual Romans (no good Roman general would keep the same tactics in a very different situation -but they did have their share of bad generals!)
I'd also be using the Capital to recruit Cap-only troops

It's funny, I'm kinda torn between using them in a "optimal" way for Dominions and using them how the Romans tended to use them.
I expect most good EA Ermor players would be rolling their eyes at this :D

If they're not sniggering at the idea of using them at all @@battlemode

30:30 I'm unsure about site searching rituals. They let you search twice* as fast because you don't move and they let you search at level 4 with a level 1 mage but those gems are precious too and you can spend a lot of them over the turns**.
    * at least within their substantial range
** Finding sites -and including the better but rarer higher level sites- earlier does increase your income but the question is whether this offsets the cost
*** You also lose out again by only searching the one path where your mage (at least the one you would search with) likely has more than one.
I suspect these rituals are mostly a trap but more likely to have their place with a nation very focused on one gem flavour.

Nah they're not a trap, they're essential. It depends on your game of course, but they're used in MP games all the time and if it's used in MP, you know it's useful.

That's what everyone else thought! :P
What they definitely are is *convenient*
