- The story of the monumental mosaic offered by Turkey to NATO in 1960. Designed and constructed by Turkish artist Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu, this work of art weighs 10 tons and is over 14 metres long and 3 metres high.
With the mosaic containing motifs and symbols frequently used in the Anatolian culture, such as the evil eye or patterns of traditional carpets, it stands for the diversity and also the synthesis of different Turkish folk arts.
Mehmet Fatih Ceylan, a former Permanent Representative of Turkey to NATO, says, “I believe that it’s a symbol of Turkish integration with the Alliance. That’s what it symbolises. Reflecting the Turkish culture, different Anatolian civilisations being integrated with the Western world.”
