I bought the cheapest shortbed Squarebody on Facebook Marketplace! Will it run? Daily driver?!?

- I've been looking for a squarebody shortbed for quite some time but the prices seemed astronomical for what you were getting or they were located 1,500 miles away. I finally found one an afternoon drive away that was in my price range and seemed to fit some of my requirements. As with any Facebook Marketplace listing, there were quite a few dilemmas along the way to making it roadworthy! But lets see if we can make this thing a daily driver! I'm not actively looking to sell this one but as with most things it could be bought for a price. That price on this pickup is $7500. Email me at the address below to discuss more details if you can't live without Casper the unfriendly square in your life! Thanks much for watching!

How the faak do you not have more subscribers dude. This is pure UA-cam gold. Been a subscriber for a bit now but found you after watching some VGG and Junkyard Digs. You 3 are the only ones I can enjoy... watched one of your old Ford truck episodes this morning to get me in the mood to do brake lines, rear brakes and pesky front and rear leaf spring hangers/shackles. Pain in my ass it was I tell ya.
Much appreciated for the kind words! Good luck with your project! It'll be worth the effort!
NEW ONE HERE!!!! This is cool
Stumbled upon your videos on my 3 days off from work. Watched about 10 episodes so far and haven’t done anything else 😂😂 loving the videos 👍🏻
Welcome aboard!
Another win!! 2+ hours of Mortske and Duff on a Monday. Who's got it better than me? Great job !!
Watching these videos is getting me motivated to get my 76 C10 short box going again, I have had it since 92, it has had a couple different motor and transmission combo's over the years, 350, 383, 454.
Awesome!
Mystery funnel fluid for the internal cluster function engine... BRILLIANT!
Tech tip of the day check the reluctor wheel , the magnet in those 4.3 where prone to cracking and will cause intermittent missing. I don’t no how many of those I changed back in the day . Just a visual inspection of the coil magnet you can see if the magnets cracked or not but you replaced so your good to go
I drive my 78 K5 a lot and it rides like a covered wagon but I still love the old square bodies. That 86 is cool the way you lowered her but she need a 5.3 and a 4L60 in her.
I had a 79 Chevy van with a 4.3 V6. Ran great, pretty peppy, decent gas mileage. Had it for about 3 years, sold it making a profit actually. Watching u work on this one brought back memories. Enjoy watching 😎👍
Very nice!
Making stuff run is your game. An awesome near 3 hour run. Great job. Missed the show, again. My apologies...But I enjoyed this one, you’ve got tons of talent there Tom.
Thanks Roy!
Great video. I have a 1986 Square body chevy suburban 2500 with a 454 GM crate motor and it sounds like a beast lol
Oh good! A reason to get out of bed in the morning. Mortske Mondays never disappoint!!!
I don't get out of bed til my coffee is ready and handed to me
Not unless your fuel line is water that's got holes in it or your fuel sending unit has the same thing as rotted and not sucking is sucking air
I like the headlight/grille setup the truck currently has. My personal favorite of the square body years. I would swap TO that setup but different strokes for different folks I guess
My favorite is the 1980 one year only front grill and square headlights that came on the Silverado and some Scottsdale models
Yeah I'd watch some follow-ups on this one. It's always nice to daily drive something that you're putting some work into
get a new cap, rotor, check wires in the dark...you can see the arching...4.3 are notorious...keep up the inspirational videos....love your work...duff too!
Happy Monday? Darn tootin’ when we get a new Mortske video!
Enjoy seeing the truck improve with every upgrade. Good job, lot's of work.
Thanks!
I swapped a 396 big block into mine with a 400 transmission. Mine had the 4.3 with the three in the tree transmission with 3.42 gears. It would beat a lot of V8 vehicles off the line. Wanted more power so swapped in my 396. Wish I could find that truck now
Here in New Zealand, having a perfect cold snack watching Duff, oh and you "working" on the ute, dosen't get any better. Cheers.
Awesome truck! Yes more from this ... would love to see when you get all the stuff done you want! Me and my daughter are looking for a square body project hopefully soon! Keep up the get videos.
If you do wanna buy one get it from California with no rust and clean with good price and stepside
was off line due to shitty internet so glad to see your still rockin look foward to this every week thanks mortske!!! love it!!!
Thanks again Joel! Hopefully you got the interwebs tuned back up!
Been stuck in a barracks these last 4 months your videos definitely make the time go by haha also makes me wish I were home to work on my projects lol.
You can do it!
Mortske, loooove the square body.Love to see u take it a bit further.Definitely replace the carb. She looks a lot more solid than some of ur"treasures".Love ur show, man.U and Duff rock!!!!
Thanks! Will do!
Nice shortbody squarebed!! Thanks Mortske, I took a couple of hours out of my workday to watch this and it was worth it! (I could have waited, but where's the fun in that?).
Much appreciated Dom!
Forgot to mention that I love your inclusion of an instrumental cover of GBV’s “My Valuable Hunting Knife” as your montage music.
Glad you liked that!
Man, you gotta be able to find a late "80's 305 HO. I know its not a super crazy engine to swap, but as for a daily, and something you want to be reasonably economical, that would be the way to go. All, or most of the brackets and such should transfer. Or and old 283 with 305 HO heads, that's actually a pretty decent combo...ask me how I know. lol
Find a 305, Ho! xD xD
305 and a SM465 is a pretty unkillable combo.
Especially if it is the L69 with the 416 58cc heads 1983-1984.. and even the 91-92 h.o. tuneport 305 with 081,187 heads..
@@richardbates2367 Agreed
I have a 307 with 305 heads, it runs and sound like no other small block
Looks good. I recently got an 85 GMC short bed that I'm restoring. Just got the 305 out, a peppy 350 in, and ready to start wiring.
Thanks Mortske and Duff!
I’d quite like to see the progress when you fit the new panels. :)
That's a sweet Squarebody daily rig! I forgot the much later squarebodys came with a V6 option at least '86-'87. I really did forget that option. It was always a big V8 or an inline six if you didn't want a V8 in the earlier years. Or a V4 for the International pickup trucks.... but we shouldn't talk about those lol. Great content!
Thanks for another Mortske Monday. I doesn't matter to me what you work on its all good. Thanks to Chin for all the work he does. Cold beer is good. No strong IPA'S or Coors light though.
He's a good guy!

by the way....do you know anybody that's selling a late 50s Laurentian, Rideau or Pathfinder... Let me know

Good thing you're a mean, lean mechanical machine to get in that engine bay to do that tune up! Love the placement of them GM distributors!
Cracked me up when you said the Vortec is a small block with the cylinders cut off. I was literally waiting for you to mention that haha. I have a 02 S10 with the 4.3 Vortec and she's pretty reliable. Doesn't complain too much other than typical maintenance that comes with age. Love your videos and Duff of course! I'll keep a look out for those Sammiches!
If the EGR valve/solenoid is still there make sure it's removed and blocked off. They would carbon up real easy on the pintle and stick open, causing a super lean condition at idle, rough idle, dieseling and hard starting.
I'll check it out!
Wow, nice. Just the whole package there. The dizzy mod was cool, you made it look easy
The beauty of editing!
Show us some more on the truck it would be nice to see it through to a completed project.
Love the content. Started viewing when I seen that cutlass. I almost got a cutlass same time last year, really miss it. Had a rocket 350. Anyways, back onto the topic. You're a great youtuber. I love your dog, and I love your content. It keeps me motivated and on track with my school work. I know kinda weird but it gets the job done. Love your content, keep up the good work.
Hey thanks much for the kind words and for watching!
I worked on an 86 Chevy with a 4.3 . I was shocked to find a Canadian truck all the way down here in Oklahoma. I didn't even know Chevy offered a 4.3 in 86.
I love the square body's. I have an '81 GMC one ton camper special with a 454, only 66k original miles. It loves gas stations.... It's my wood and hay hauler. The original bed has been replaced with a flatbed. No rust whatsoever and the original paint is still in great condition. However, those darn door latches.....
@Jim jibroni -- Well, you have a point actually. Perhaps it's meant to display that the engine hasn't been replaced or rebuilt. That's the point I was trying to get across anyway, LOL.
Was great to watch this live! Also 2 Hours long?! DANG!
I too like the truck for a go to work driver. The video was informative and shows how to rationalize a purchase of a less then perfect used vehicle. However as much as we enjoy your mechanical prowess and sense of humor, you must know Old Duff Dog is a true star. He just brings a smile to your face every time you reach for vehicle door handle. Not without me!!! One day he is fluffy and pretty, the next scene he has black mud on all fours and leaps into the truck, then he is happy to there he can not stop licking your face. His stubby tail going 100 miles an hour. All we know is what you show us. But it sure seems like you two are joined at the hip by Car Guy Gene. Thank You for posting some great, informative and funny videos. The fire, the valve, pool of fluids, the muddy paw print. We will never forget Mortske and Duff Dog. Dennis
Everyone truly is here for the Duff!
The words “cheap” and “square body”don’t appear in the same sentence anymore. It’s definitely the most in demand truck from GM. Personally I would keep the 4.3 . They’re torquey enough to pull a car trailer and they get good mpg. Being crazy cheap and easy to fix are pluses as well.
Did a fuel pump replacement on a 350 in a ‘78 GMC pickup. To get the pump push rod to stay up, I smeared a little axle grease on it. Worked like a charm
Seems nobody know about taking the bolt out that’s on the backside of the fuel pump pad on the block that seems to have no reason being there ( it’s a short bolt ) and thread in a fuel pump bolt that’s longer to hold the rod up.
GM cast that provision in the block for that purpose.
Mort I just started watching this episode and I've already got to comment. If u leave the 6cyl in that thing is going to be such a load you wouldn't even want you're grandmother to catch you driving it. You're gonna hate it! It's almost un-American not to put an LS in that when u already got one. Just kidding! I've been watching your channel since pretty close to the beginning. Big fan! I love of the content, keep it up!!
It'll be fine for daily cruising!
@@MortskeRepair I agree, please don't put an ls in that cool old truck. Those are supposed to have a cast iron 6 or v8.
Great looking squarebody! Just gotta love them Especially when they have aquarium hose and Chinese clickty clacks on them. 😁 There's nothin on the truck that the Duff can't Buff out she's gonna be a great DD for you!
Very nice work and filming. Thank you Mr. Editor man - you rock too. Duff is such a good dog - he must know he is loved! I appreciate the long video - easy to complete while work is slow. Keep up the great content. When you have a minute, can you review the projects you have in the shop - maybe outside too? We are here for you! Chuck in NE Kansas
We all appreciate you watching! We'll look into that!

"patiently waits for crew cab chevy content" haha
Great video bud, always a pleasure to watch you and your foreman duff do stuff
I have an 86 gmc long bed with a 4.3 in it. It was my grandpa’s farm truck. It doesn’t have enough power to get out of its own way. With stock ties it has the turning radius of a Mack with a 53’ trailer.
That truck has the e4me quadrajet carb, it's computer controlled. Since you've pulled the computer controlled module out of the distributor, it may not be working right not giving it enough fuel. Easy fix is to just put a normal quadrajet on it
isnt that exactly what he did?
@@bifaith100 Yup!
@@MortskeRepair How are you going to get that truck to pass an emissions test, or is'nt that a factor in N D. ?
@@jeromebreeding3302 We got nothing like that here.
@@MortskeRepair AOC will see to it you ride a bicycle before it’s all over with.
We had a couple of these trucks on the district I worked on with the Forest Service in Camp Crook SD. I worked there from 1987-88. One was an 84 with the 250 inline and 4 speed manual, and the other was an 87 with the throttle body 4.3 and 4 speed manual. My crew got the 87 so we had a/c in ours. It was basically this same truck just in a calf scour green color. It also had the idiot lights instead of actual gauges.
It wasn't a bad pickup, it had fairly decent power and the manual had granny low so it did pull itself around the hills fairly good being it was only 2 wheel drive.
On the highway, it did manage to maintain highway speeds as well, and I believe it even had cruise so it was fairly well equipped for a government truck. I wouldn't mind finding one for myself to drive, though I'd opt for the long box over the short box, but that's just me. A guy can haul more in a long box.
The alternator should run around 14.2 to 14.8 volts, so it's right where it should be.
Not much going on in Camp Crook these days! Good times!
I love these old Chevy trucks, mostly just for the looks but if I were to buy one it would be a long box with a 350 V8
@Larry Arthauer my dream truck is an obs Ford dually but I’d love a squarebody Chevy too
@Larry Arthauer My dad bought a Big 10 new in 78, nice rig, a little heavier suspension from what I remember
If you're going to buy one of the square body truck and you get there and it has a V6 or a 305 V8 turn around and walk away you'll never be happy with him and if you care about steering the truck voice check the frame at the gearbox a lot of times they'll be cracked and they will crack all the way out and fall off
@@kennethGumm I haven't seen a 2 wheel drive frame cracked out yet, but a few 4x4 frames cracked, a real issue when they sell frame reinforcing plate kits for them. Bought a 1/2 ton 4x4 parts truck that had some of the worst arc welding attempted repairs I have ever seen, steering box was almost falling off, good thing they quit driving it.
I had a 91 c1500, not a square body, but had the TBI 4.3 I sold the thing a few years ago, had 687,000 miles on it, original engine, I installed a rebuilt the trans in 2002 at 190k miles on it, was my grandfathers truck he bought new. I just love these old engines, nothing to them, interchangeable parts, they don't make a ton of power, probably why they last so long lol. I bought me a 92 Silverado with the 350tbi 5 years ago, just hit 400k miles on it, but has a 94 engine in it with the 95 heads I bought from Summit Racing. Hard to find a square body in good shape here in the rust belt.
Maybe the Egr valve.. I’ve had a couple late 80’s 4.3’s and the egr valves take a sh*t, and make up run really rough and eventually won’t run once their warm
Cheap egr valves are a big no-no as well. The only aftermarket egr valve for the 4.3, 5.0, 5.7 that I’ve installed that lasted has been an Echlin .
Everybody knows when you're trying to get your shaft back in the distributor hole, you have to use some veinerslider. Yes, definitely more follow-ups.
The juice from a can of Vienna sausage works great for lube. Whatever is left over, just pour it in your beer !
Mirrors on the windshield are overrated.
Thanks for sharing, I miss my 73 k5 and my 86 c20
Both of those were square body.
Good times
Why isn't it getting any fuel, asks Mortske.
Karl says: Ain't got no gas in it..uh hmm.
I like them french fried taters mmm hmmm
Please turn this C-10 into a series. All the mods, fixes, LS Swap, etc. A really easy platform.
Going to have to call her Lean Jean, since its on a natural weight reduction plan and lean running condition. She should really handle well for doughnuts after being slammed and the front end bias weight difference from 2 less cylinders.
You are so lucky to have one of them Steel Case Office Chairs! Real Heavy Duty made in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I put a roof on one of their buildings when I was in construction.
It's too bad they took a big dive in 2008. And after 2020 and Covid, they were just getting back in the flow and another dive.
Them early chairs and desks will last you a life time if you don't abuse them too bad. Wish I had one.
My younger years I never cared for much of anything Green because everything was Green. In my older years, I would take a green desk and chair!
Green handled knives and tools are not that common, which is why I collect them now. But Metallic Red is my favorite Truck Color!
Congrats on finding your "new" square body. Definitely show us the body repair and all the updates. I had a '89 4.3 with a 4 speed with overdrive. It didn't have enough HPs to really use the overdrive and the little pedal was always getting pressed to the rug. I would like to see you drop a 350 into Casper, I'm sure you would be happier.

The 4.3 L (262 cu in) V6 is the last and most successful engine in the Chevrolet 90-degree V6 engine family. This engine was introduced in 1985 as a replacement for the 229 cu in (3.8 L) V6 in the full-size Chevrolet, the Chevrolet El Camino and Chevrolet Monte Carlo. It also replaced the 250 cu in (4.1 L) in the Chevrolet full-size trucks and full-size vans (including the mid-sized Astro) as the new base six-cylinder engine.
Great info!
