“At that moment I knew, surely and clearly, that I was witnessing perfection. He stood before us, suspended above the earth, free from all its laws like a work of art, and I knew, just as surely and clearly, that life is not a work of art, and that the moment could not last.”
It's not just fly fishing at its finest that elevates this scene, it's the spiritual dimension that is captured so beautifully, captured with this almost mystical perfection. The very best of pre WW2 Americana is brought to vivid & poignant life in this scene. The way things once were. Sheer sublime perfection indeed.
I think I have witnessed perfection. A friend of mine could not be out fished, beautiful double haul cast and could lay a dry so sweetly from great distance. He won the one fly competition in Christchurch NZ twice. I have caught an awful lot of fish in my now over 50s yrs of fly-fishing in the North island, but not as many as Johnny.
The idea,on paper,of a movie with at its core, fly fishing..sounds about as enthralling as watching paint dry..but every inch of this movie is perfect. The acting, the music, the cinematrography...Robert should have gotten the oscar for it.
Is a river changes its direction the fish in the river is left behind. But wow the river is beautiful. So when I was younger a small stream behind my house was redirected. I saw the dying fish and helped the river on its past. Who would be able to re- direct this powerful river. Wow the river stole my heart.
It was a movie about all of the beautiful and sad moments in life. All such moments contribute to the rich tapestry that are our individual lives. It speaks to the intertwining of our lives with nature, God, philosophy, and our place in the world. If anything you should take comfort away from it. Take care.
It was perfection, because it gave Paul one last moment of freedom. That this was the thing he wanted his entire life, to be the perfect fisherman. He achieved it and giving the audience this right before he dies puts all of our souls at peace.
I fell in love with this beautiful film from the first day I saw it in the 90s. Despite this, I always reproached it for its short length. Only today, after reading one of the comments on this video, I discovered that it is not short at all: It lasts 2 hours! In other words, it was not short, but it simply seemed short to me, because it is so wonderful.
Was he using a click a pawl reel here and let the fish take loads of line when it ran using his hand to palm the reel to play the fish? seen this movie growing up always remembered this fishing scene and im still a fisheman 31 yrs later

Some fisherman, including myself, cast with the right, and after hooking a fish, switch the rod to the left to reel in. I don't know why, but thats how I've always done it. My father is the same.

Have always LOVED this.
James... I'm bawling! 😭
I saw this movie year ago. Today this quote struck me again and I needed to hear the clip.
One of the finest movie quotes.... Iconic! ☺️😉
Good writing. This will stand the rest of time
Very rare to see Americana perfectly encapsulated in a film. Redford outdid himself with this one.
This one, All The Pretty Horses and Dances With Wolves have always been my "Americana" trilogy.
The film captures fishing, and especially fly fishing, so beautifully that it always makes me weep by the end. "I am haunted by waters".

I watched this in VHS with my dad back in the days. Even as an elementary school kid, I knew I witnessed something special.

I thought I was gonna get bored outta my mind in the first 5 mins. Boy was I mistaken.
Great acting at 1:27. Norman smiles "that's my little bro! No one truly appreciates him more than I do."
Norman was a great big bro
Beautiful scene, projection of emotions we feel at meaningful moments in our life.
my first time watching this movie I knew after seeing this scene Paul was going to die, but this is a beautiful movie can not stop the water works.
Roxanne Burger there's a book too
The primordial yet artistic satisfaction of fly fishing is perfectly summed up in this short clip.
Great movie. Can't watch it with anyone though because I always end up weeping!
Me too it brings me to tears
Yep, Me too. A truly superb film.
Ecspecially the ending
Its in my classic collection here. MASTERPIECE.
amazing movie! Made me start fly fishing, been loving it for ten years!!!!!!!
You, me and every other guy that wasn't already fly fishing.
I’ve been a bait fisherman, my whole life, and I’m from Montana and live in Missoula, I just picked up flyfishing last week!
Witnessing young brad that's perfection
Can watch it over and over again
This is art....

Eventually,
all things merge into one...
and a river runs through it.
The river was cut
by the world's great flood...
and runs over rocks
from the basement of time.
On some of the rocks
are timeless raindrops.
Under the rocks are the words...
and some of the words are theirs.
I am haunted by waters.
This scene totally reminds me of my brother Billy!!! I love you brother!!!
i went to the exact river because of this movie. Worth the trip!
Everyone's a critic. Been there, done that. landed the fish!! with barbless hook!!!
Great scene. Love Brad.
It’s a sin to cut that scene there!
Movieclips seems to do that a lot; cut a scene just a line or 10 seconds too short.
Yeah, Movieclips sucks.
This film is so beautiful I love it
A beautiful film.
They're gonna make a jawbreaker out of that fish.
Ed edd and eddy, by meatcanyon?
This was a sad movie.
blondedbythelight703 Life is sad too.

blondedbythelight703 you say was, it means now it is not a sad movie anymore? I dont understand.
@@Ddgi-u73 the only thing that ruins it all to what you said is Alhzeimer or how you spell it. A damn curse for us mortals.
RIP Norm MacDonald.
After all that, Paul manages to keep his hat on and his cigarettes dry.
Thats perfection man
This goes out to my a new American Hero...Dan Bailey! Thank you sir, and what a catch! Witnessing perfection!
At the end of this scene, Paul is hatless. Yet, throughout his fight with the fish, he manages to keep his hat on even when he submerges in the river.
It was perfection, because it gave Paul one last moment of freedom. That this was the thing he wanted his entire life, to be the perfect fisherman. He achieved it and giving the audience this right before he dies puts all of our souls at peace.
Some say only addicts witness beauty.
Dry flies in this movie, but not dry eyes
I bought the DVD and watched several times.
I Love this movie. My husband took up fly fishing because of it.
Cool.....Nice run. Sweet movie.....VERY American. I'm hooked!
Bro that upstream mend had to be gnarly
Thanks For The Memories'.

Yes, it has a running time of 123 minutes (2h 3m) but I know what you mean. 😂
NO fish were actually CAUGHT during the filming of this movie..😆👍
Lol.
Cinematic greatness. Almost "looking at you kid" if you're into the American West. Dry flies only myself. Lol
Great scene from a great movie, but I've never seen a trout suddenly quit flopping right after its caught.
Agree, but still kinda want to bear spray you for it. 😁
@@YouDude60 :-O
He probably cracked it over the head before they ran over

Uncle Keith,Viper and Mr.Smith
Wowww 👏👏
Try doing that with barbless hooks.
Easy! Have done similar - countless times.
Yea um for decades. Only I wont chase a little inland trout lake that.
The real América

25 cents
25 cents is all it takes...
The double uses a silver reel. Brad Pitt a black one.
Nature is cruel. Life is cruel.
Hope he has insurance on his iphone
Really all that drama for a fish.
Where was the actual fly fisherman from?
Must be good shoes
Sloppy presentation, that fish would have definitely gotten off as there would have been no way to keep proper tension on it as he was falling down the rapids. Are you pulling the fish or is the fish pulling you?
Shane McCoy it's a movie
I know, just being a nit pick.
the fish is pulling your leg
Nah dude whenever I take a fish on a dry fly it's when I cast over top of them, slap the water with my line, and the fly plops down.
Fishing movie?
too bad paul went south
cold coutry, looks nice in the summer but pure cold 8 months of cold and winter
Why does this fish jump in slow motion?
Waders must not have been invented yet.
Why does he cast with his right arm and have his reel set up for a lefty? Or am I just tired?
Jake Cerra it’s all preference... but it also would be weird having to switch hands after casting every time if it was set up for a righty.

Bruh...
i wish this was more about fishing and not sad shit bummer
lmao this aint it cheif youre dead 10x outta 10
:D
Wow fishing is so boring... lol jk
Redford specializes in making the most boring movies : e.g. horse whisperer, this movie, and even ordinary people in parts. Certain scene just drags.
No..it is simply that you are not sensitive enough to see that greatness.
Agree, it's not the artist or the art here--it's the critic that is boring.
