@Jonathan Stark it's what happens when watching an amateur review something they haven't spent adequate time with. Nothing wrong with being an amateur but UA-cam has lowered the bar for information by a lot.
I have a unit since months and its in my continuous workflow. Amazing drum destortion unit! Actually I more use it as a creative unit than a mixing unit.
Damn yes, i never used it and actually never bought/demoed it, but just the fact that you can change compressors types without huge changes in level and other parameters is outstanding. Seems very versatile and convinient for Waves users with an insert for other Waves plugins between modules. I'm too lazy to download a demo and try it out since i don't like the sound of Waves plugins in general, but i will definitely watch a Snake Oil episode if Snake Oil Guy will make one.
Do you think that "Clean Boost" could be a good solution as a soft clipper for mastering? Anyway, an analog unit connected via usb only is something incredible. Are there any other units with that system on the market?
One important issue for me that no-one seems to notice is that analog devices have way more resolution in the range of the control knobs than digital ones do. Often you can hear the steps in the changes when turning a purely digital knob as the transitions are low resolution, whereas analog simply doesn't have this. Since this unit is a hybrid of analog and digital, it would be good to know whether the resolution of the digital stepping is noticeable
@@WillyJunior Yeah, I get that but the problem is the first part of your premise is flawed. "Taste" is subjective. Whatever form of music you listen to, there is a group of people who said it was "noise" at one time. You could inform the guy about the merits of saturation/distortion instead of telling him he makes shitty music. It would be the nicer thing to do.
Did your hair got in the inputs ? It looks a bit distorted... :-) Love the midi connections on the Electron, are the buttons programmable or (and) do they respond to the midi learn functions of 3rd party vst's in your DAW ? Would make a nice controller that way and a lot more versatile device . Many Thx. and keep'm coming !
The mid drive in the guitar pedal version, the elektron "analog drive", is based on a tubescreamer as far as I know/hear. It is probably a similar circuit in the heat.
How did you solve the level issue? I initially bought it to play it live, since the circuits sound awesome and its very playable. But because I already do mixing live I found that dialling in the levels on the fly was too much overhead for me. Great thing for the studio tho imho!
Can I ask two questions about you mixing at 192khz? Firstly, do you have to have your buffer / latency all the way up to handle all the tracks and processing at such a high quality? Secondly, what you use to get your mix back to 16bit (or 24bit) 44.1khz? Love your channel, thanks for the cool vids.
Nice device, but I suppose it is working as an audio interface when you use it with the USB connection? That could be a problem in the windows world when you've already got an audio interface connected to your system with ASIO drivers (more or less mandetory in Cubase and other windows DAW's). I guess you've got to choose between one or the other. Audio device aggregation in windows is a real pain. I tried it once with my Steinberg UR-242 and a Blue Yeti USB mic through ASIO4ALL and it mostly worked but then you can't use all of the UR-242's features. I bet you better use the Analog Heat without the USB connection in this case? (but missing the DAW integration). According to their website it comes with software but no mention of drivers. My experience with class complaint devices is that functionality / feature support differ between operating systems and you often need manufacturer specific ASIO drivers to get all features to work in windows whereas on an iPad things work driverless.
Digitone uses the same software system (Overbridge) and works alongside my audio interface (in Windows) with no problems. I don’t see why the Analogue Heat would be any different.
Anyone know how to use it with usb only? I'm trying to do it with mpc one. Is that possible? I think the moc one does 44khz and the heat does 48 kHz, so it can't be used as a sound card. Is there another way? I'm routing the mpc to the model 12 mixer using usb only. Any hope for usb only for the heat in this situation?
I think it only gets interesting when you combine the envelopes/filter/EQ. The saturation distortion etc… is nothing to write home about. But I’m spoilt for choice with amps and valve overdrive pedals etc… Would need to try one. It is stereo though with a lot of control. Just don’t really like the overdrive on my analog rytm but don’t get me wrong I love elektron just don’t think fx are their strong point. Cheers for the demo 👍
I’m picking up my second AH next Friday. Killer when I want to change the character of my drum bus (or individual tracks as well). I’ll be using the 2nd for mastering tracks. Easily my favorite piece of gear, excited to see a MK3 version come 2020.
The usb output very surprisinglu sounds better than the stereo outs with Mogami througu my Neves. I have no idea why but they killed it with the usb function. No noise in the usb cable for the first time ive ever found. Any other product ive ever tried to record audio and usb there’s a horrible digital ring. This product is has been one of my favorite purchases. I love using the side only mode on instruments
Maybe the reason for the gain issue has to do with Plugin Development levels. SSL, Slate, Waves, etc. usually calibrate their inputs so that -18 dBFS in your DAW is the same as 0 on the VU meters of a console. So if you have hot STEMs or trackouts at, say, -6dBFS for Mastering headroom they would be clipping the shit out of the plugin's input.
@@NeelleeStenat $799 us the going rate here in the US. But I gotta ask, is this professional gear or is this consumer-level gear designed for making hard techno? Because it's relatively cheap for one and relatively expensive for the other.
@@robertsyrett1992 around 500€ here in Europe. I believe it all depends on how you see this unit in your workflow, if it useful for you or not. The whole universe is build on the laws of nature. These physical laws are informations. Always consists on informations. Always is virtual. Analog is vitrual too. The analog equipment have just little bit more bitrate.
A collection of cheap sounding saturation/distortion circuits that all mainly add noise, including "Clean boost" mode. Filter is "ok". To be honest not much (anything?) is available at that price, that is stereo and of course its an Elektron box, so you are paying mainly for the brand. I stopped using mine in the studio, it adds noise even when I send a signal in hot and use "clean boost". The first 3 circuits are the only one that are worth using for my taste, the rest are ok if you want trashy distortion. Only use it when I play out and want a DJ style filter inserted on the mixer's master buss.
I must be missing something. This had a very lackluster and limited sound. Saturn and SDRR are both way better sounding. I think people are getting WAY to hypnotized by the analog aspect. Unless you need this for live audio, I can't see the point. Way better options from UAD if you do need something live, anyway. If you really need to feel you're using something analog when something like SDRR is better than analog in every way except a tiny bit of latency, just put a tube on your keyboard and tell yourself you're using analog gear. No one, and I mean no one, is going to notice the difference in a finished product except that Saturn or SDRR is going to give you a far better end product for less money and hassle. Snake oil.
Digital distortion still sounds digital. It’s got too much sheen on it. Distortion and compression are two things that digital hasn’t quite nailed yet IMO.
this guy is not helpful at all for people who dont work in a professional mastering studio. also has he never touched an elektron box before? is he not scandanavian? the endless encoders are great, push down for larger increments and turn for fine tuning. also the mirrored functions for the amp page are for preset saving and automation. it's not a downside, it's a feature. and you "don't like" the arcade style very very easy and intuitive naming convention that every single elektron machine uses? you are used to rudimentary simple gear, not modern innovative equipment. this isn't useful information
The Analog Heat is just 8 guitar pedals, a suspiciously digital sounding filter and a decent two band EQ. (We couldn't have gotten three? Like on the cheaper Analog drive?)...As far as the LFO and envelope follower? WHO CARES! That's not what you want when you buy this thing......It sounds BAD! It is NOT a "saturation" box it is straight up distortion....like guitar pedal distortion....IT SUCKS!

Some additional headroom and a makeup gain would have made it perfect, but it’s a good way of spicing things up in a small studio setup.

you can, but it doesn't have a mic amp, so you'd need a mixer or a dedicated preamp to get the microphone signal to line level.
