So ultimately, by the anime's set of rules, it was a legitimate summoning. Besides, this isn't the first nor last time real-life cards differ from how they're seen in the anime.

One of which was a small cameo in episode 5 where Jaden, Syrus, and Chumly are playing a game where they draw a card, and the higher the level, the sacrier the story has to be. (To be honest that sounds like a fun game I'd like to play with some friends some day.) But anyway, Professor Banner joins the game and he draws five headed dragon. Also Five headed dragon appeared in season 4 (you know the one that wasn't dubbed) where Mr.trueman used it in his third duel with Jaden.

@@The_Chateau Terrifying bit is cards like the dark magician the dragon knight+safe zone/power of the guardian make for a damn tough combo. safe zone makes it not able to target it, power of the guardian protects from destruction and battle destruction, and gives a 500 atk boost every time it atks. and the dragon knight protects backrow from being able to target THEM for destruction. its not FOOLPROOF, but its pretty damn hard to break through it.

I mean it's Monster with 5000 ATTK points who can only be destroyed by Light Attribute Monsters. At the time of the anime that made it a juggernaut of a beast since this was still when ATTK points were the most important part of the game.
I had an opponent do that to me in one of the old GBA games. I used Cyber Stein's effect to pay 5000LP to summon F.H.D, attacked and immediately lost when my opponent activated Magic Cylinder.

That's the wind head. Not just that head is completely different. But also the far right head, which is the Earth head, is completely different too. For it's originally supposed to appear metal-like and not rock. Plus the necks of each of the heads were longer.

I used to run a hieratic deck that had a 5 Headed Dragon with dragons mirror since it milled a lot of dragons to GY. It was a fun gimmick deck that I could sometimes chain as an otk where my board ended with Blue Eyes Ultimate and Five Headed attacking a clean board. I miss playing with it but power creep and game speed made it unusable and I don’t have the time or money to commit to keeping up with anything competitive.
My personal favorite appearance of Five Headed dragon was in GX when trueman uses it against Jaden with a combination of Skill Drain, really dang cool.
