Loved all those suburban grounds, windy Hill, Arden st, Victoria Park, the junction oval, Moorabbin, princess park, the western oval, and the lakeside oval, the VFL was a totally different experience, fairly cheap too,
Not to get pedantic or anything, but Carlton, Collingwood, Richmond, Fitzroy, Melbourne, North Melbourne, South Melbourne all played at home grounds within or neighbouring the City of Melbourne.
Home ground advantage resembled a dog protecting its back yard. Baras was fierce, loved how they used to pack em in suburban footy grounds. It was so primal.. the 70's were special..
I know I've probably watched my Swannies play at Arden Street but it's the only one of the suburban grounds I seriously can't remember going to. Great footage!
Thanks for the upload, Gezza. I was a 9 year-old Fitzroy supporter in 1979; I liked the Kangas, however. As you'll no doubt recall, the '77 GF/GF replay were the first GFs to be telecast, live; and they were the first GFs I watched. Ironically, less than 20 years later, I became a Nth Melbourne supporter. I was never going to support an AFL-created, QLD team, with a tokenistic lion mascot. Fuck Ross Oakley and the AFL! Carn the Kangas!
Bn Fitzroy supporter since 1969 .took me a while to accept Brisbane but i figure if Muzzas on board then ill support them .i live in Adelaide and Brisbane have just beaten both our teams .the whole state goes miserable when they lose lol.
@Barracuda 1964 Im a Vic who moved to SA .Im totally non bias as my team Fitzroy is long gone, so i really get a laugh at how angry and so full of Vic H8 people r over here .Bizarre ...
1979 was the year Fitzroy finally made finals after a long absence. I' wasn't a Fitzroy supporter but went to the big elimination final win over Essendon at Waverley and the loss to Collingwood at the MCG a week later. Great atmosphere at both games.
more success coming under alistar clarkson in the next couple of years hopefully do what barassi did by taking us from bottom to top and premiership in 3 years
I thought Barassi's address to the players was a rant more than anything else. I would have thought there was a game plan , with the coach ,at the Qtr time break, assessing how well the team was executing that plan. Instead RDB just rips shreds off the players, including his favourite whipping boy - Keith Grieg
Great upload, awesome footage. I was 9 years old in 79, but I still remember these old days, going to watch the Hawks at Arden st, Western Oval, Vic Park & Pincess Park, great memories, cheers :)
G'day JimShadyUK, its was great to a watched the old style footy at the suburban grounds before they all went. Even Kardinia park Geelong is a mimi Telstra dome now. Glad you enjoyed the footage, cheers Gezza
Wow! Fantastic. How fast and tough was footy? None of this standing around for 20 seconds wondering where to kick the ball that we see today. Just get on with it, and players making position further afield. Dunno about barass denigrating the players though. They look stunned that they're giving it heaps and being blasted for it. What great footage. Life so unsanitised and fun. Beats the daylights out of today's game. Brilliant stuff.
Was probably there that day. How talented the Kangas .... Dempsey, Greig, Blight, Glendenning ..... 5 Brownlows between them & Cable, runnerer up and 4 Sandovers.
The AFL would set up a Special Panel to investigate the matter. The coaches would be stood down pending the findings of the Panel. If the club had any Indigenous players they'd add a racism charge for good measure.
This footage is nothing short of incredible - what a flavour of late 70's football in the suburbs!

In 2022, the cheapest ticket to watch a West Coast Eagles game in Perth is $68.
WAFL games are $15 and free entry for kids under 16.
Gold. I know those players better than today's lot. Love suburban footy.
long live suburban footy & fuck the modern inner city big turf footy

@@patrick6350And Footscray who you forgot to to mention.
Fantastic! I didn’t miss a single game in ‘79. I would have been there, somewhere.
One of the cameramen was Dean Semler who went on to win an Academy Award for cinematography for Dances With Wolves

The way footy should be today.
Ron Barassi is a football god. Blunt, forceful and fearless. I met him once. A true gentleman.
R.I.P.
Wow we were packed in like Sardines at Arden St. Nice to see Bruce Doull, “The Flying Doormatt”, legendary player
Too right
Great footage of the old Arden St ,,and barass in full flight
How good is this? Can’t get enough of footage like this.
I know I've probably watched my Swannies play at Arden Street but it's the only one of the suburban grounds I seriously can't remember going to. Great footage!
Having a beer on the terraces!
Great upload Gezza ! brings back awesome memories of this great game of ours !

It should of being a North Melbourne Fitzroy merger in 1996

You gotta love Ron Barrasi in his hey day. VFL still had a neighborhood feel about it back then.
I thought Barassi's address to the players was a rant more than anything else. Yelling at anybody doesn't assist in getting that person to do wotcha' want 'em to....
Footy was heaps better back then now its all just politics
my opinion they should bring back the old suburban grounds
@@zaco21_ yep
Great footage up close with all the noise and atmosphere.
How huge was North's cheer squad back in the day...
Helps they were winning often back then..; regardless this is fabulous footage.
@J G ; assume you're aware A/ many acknowledge your point B/ as many aussie rules fans support an E.P.L team too.
@J G soccer is a non contact girls game.
Yeah but yeh , it was for the better of the club and everything is so much better these days
......not!!!
Doesn't it bring back memories.Todays game is so fast . I know more players here than I do today
Arden street, great times! The peoples game.
This footage comes from the documentary "War Without Weapons", which followed North's 1979 Pre Season and early games.
Don’t tell anyone, there’ll remove from here like they did from Facebook🤓
where can I watch a full version of " War without Weapons"?
@@roderick2105 , there's a DVD release of Year Of The Dogs. It is an extra on that DVD.
The good ole days of VFL in melbourne.
Great upload, awesome footage. I was 9 years old in 79, but I still remember these old days, going to watch the Hawks at Arden st, Western Oval, Vic Park & Pincess Park, great memories, cheers :)
You would of had watched the greatest home games back then at Waverley.
great footage. better game then than nowadays. way too corporate.
The AFL has sanitised the experience to the point I don't even bother any more. Would rather go down the local ground.
I was there ... Wow ... I must be old ... Thanks 😊
Blighty and Ebert on the same team. 2 of the greatest South Aussies.
jeez .. i dont care what anybody else thinks .but footy is the simply the greatest game in the world.. love to see this old footage
G'day JimShadyUK, its was great to a watched the old style footy at the suburban grounds before they all went. Even Kardinia park Geelong is a mimi Telstra dome now. Glad you enjoyed the footage, cheers Gezza
gezza today's afl is shit because they used biggie venues rather than small suburban venues
i hate footy played in biggie stadiums because it's like a ghost game
far out this shit is vintage
Barassi bought me a beer in Toronto.
lucky you
@@jecos1966 Probably the most famous person I ever met.
At 4:34 the scoreboard has the progress scores from the other five games, which required decoding via access to a Footy Record.
Priceless.

Haha could you imagine the likes of Dimma or Clarko talking to their blokes like Barassi & co did back in those days lol.
Haha today the players would suing the club for mental stress and PTSD.
The only VFL ground to have a tree growing in it. We used to climb up and watch until the coppers would come along and tell us to get down
Blues won by 22 points. 21.15 (141) to Roos 18.11 (119).
No wonder Barassi was pissed off. Blues won the flag that year.
The AfL did the game a disservice by changing the goal umpires uniform. Just leave things alone, but they can't.
Greatest Ground. .Arden Street, and Greatest Coach Barrassi!!!
Surely Victoria Park and Tom Hafey?
Fantastic footage. Love it. Thanks for uploading.
Was probably there that day. How talented the Kangas .... Dempsey, Greig, Blight, Glendenning ..... 5 Brownlows between them & Cable, runnerer up and 4 Sandovers.
cable isn't playing in that team. His place was taken by No 9- the recruit from the West
@@roderick2105
Bryant.
Ebert won Four Sandover's too.
this is gold!!
Golden Barassi rant!🤬🤬🏉🎽🏟️
Ron Barassi, spitting the dummy, classic.
4 premiership says it all really
That's proper coaching. None of this new age hippie shit we see today.
One of the cameras was dean Semmler a future Oscar winner !!!!!
How do ya' know this ?? Impressive !
Barrassi the greatest coach Peeiod.Could be a general of an army,!!
Except a general has a strategy supported by tactics. RDB showed neither here
4 August 1979.
Real footy ❤
Gladiatorial, tribal peoples game, now a corporate sanitised product.
who won?
+Nomad Oz North Melbourne
18.11 (119)
Carlton
21.15 (141)
ok thanks
Whatever happened to Crest Lager & Ace Lager?
they're not popular as foster's
North had Courage didn't they? Courage lager was their sponsor at one point
Just awsm
What movie is this from?
It's from a documentary called "war without weapons"
Unbelievable to think they ran around on that oval with nothing between the street, the public and the players
North have not changed
Inspire players by demoralising them. 1970s parenting handbook!!
In 2024 same old north
GO BLUES
The snowflakes today would be calling for the coach to be sacked if they were addressed like this in today's modern game
The AFL would set up a Special Panel to investigate the matter. The coaches would be stood down pending the findings of the Panel. If the club had any Indigenous players they'd add a racism charge for good measure.
Unfortunately the blues won the premiership
Barasi was a basted he would push his players to death
Seriously 2:20 - 3:50 only a game dude, settle down...
True Bushy, though it is all about the era for a fan that idolized that era of the best footy in my farking humble opinion.
How was this bloke a great coach . lol
His record speaks for itself. He was by far the best coach in the business over a period of about 20 years.
