Clara Lieu was an Adjunct Professor at the Rhode Island School of Design from 2007-2020. Her artwork has been exhibited at the International Print Center NY, the Currier Museum, Childs Gallery, the Davis Museum, and more. Lieu received an artist fellowship from the MA Cultural Council, has written for the NY Times, and lectured at Brown University, the NAEA conference, and in Vancouver & China. She has been profiled in Artsy, Hyperallergic, KPCC, & WBUR.

For MFA portfolios, someone advised that it was smart to do the following: 1) 10 works from the past year in the same series, 2) 5 works from a series from the year before and 3) 5 early works in the last part (can be more random)...
How important is the artist's resume? I want to be able to get into a good MFA program but I have absolutely no experience showing in galleries, shows, published work, etc...
For an MFA application, your professional experience won't make or break your application. There are many artists who are accepted into a program who have only been out of school say 1 or 2 years. In 2 years it's highly unlikely that someone would have a long resume of gallery exhibitions. I would say see any professional experience as icing on the cake. The most important part of your application is your portfolio, and showing that you are ready to engage with your work critically, as opposed to doing still life exercises from a class. -Prof Lieu

Though I do have some pieces in my portfolio in a few mediums (pencil, charcoal, paints), Ive never had the opportunity to branch out and try harder to access mediums (print making, ceramics, etc) This is one of the main reasons why I want to take an MFA, will the pieces in my portfolio be enough?

It's hard for me to give you an accurate answer without seeing your portfolio, but MFA programs really want to see artworks that are more focused and cohesive. Branching out and experimenting with media is of course really important to do, but that is more important in a BFA portfolio. For an MFA portfolio they want to see that you are engaging critically with your work. -Prof Lieu
Thank you Ms. Lieu! Last question, what is considered studio time when applying for an MFA? And how is it measured? I’m not familiar with the concept especially now during the time of COVID. I have a few months of free time before I plan to apply and I’d like to spend them as productively as I can! What do you suggest?
I'm currently in my 4th year of BFA and really want to apply for a good MFA Programme and I'dont really know what to prepare for the application theory part as I'm unexperienced in this area if you will reply that would be a really be help full even a brief help from will be benificial i will be looking forward to your reply ...
