  • Min Jin Lee, author of Pachinko, a finalist for the National Book Award for Fiction in 2017 joins PBS Books. The New York Times and USA Today said Pachinko was one of the Top 10 books to read in 2017.
    FROM THE PUBLISHER:
Pachinko follows one Korean family through the generations, beginning in early 1900s Korea with Sunja, the prized daughter of a poor yet proud family, whose unplanned pregnancy threatens to shame them all. Deserted by her lover, Sunja is saved when a young tubercular minister offers to marry and bring her to Japan.
So begins a sweeping saga of an exceptional family in exile from its homeland and caught in the indifferent arc of history. Through desperate struggles and hard-won triumphs, its members are bound together by deep roots as they face enduring questions of faith, family, and identity.
Women authors, fiction, families, Korea, domestic fiction, historical fiction, cultural heritage

There is so much in this book...I've now read it twice within the past six months (and I've rarely read any book
more than once.) But I felt this book, the characters and their stories were so real to me,. Min Jin Lee writes with
a beautiful simplicity and honesty. Surely, I will be reading this exceptional book again.

Great interview! I read the book in 3 days, I’ve never done such a thing. I really wish this subject remains in the spotlight and that Min Jin produces more content telling such beautiful stories as pachinko.

I stared at the ceiling for half an hour after reading this book. I just finished it two days ago and I will definitely read it again. Sublime, devastating, and beautiful. Thank you Min Jin Lee for this masterpiece!

It saddens me to think that people believe the Right want to silence this type of dialogue and the emergence of Asian culture in media. Not so. In fact, it would be the left that has dominated media and held the power to silence other voices that were not deemed desirable or marketable. The time for books such as this is long overdue and the desire for them is also. I can not wait to read this book and look forward to each new episode of the series. It is truly amazing.
